Joe Gibbs Racing announced its own Next Gen model for 2022—Ty Gibbs.
The 19-year-old grandson of Coach Joe Gibbs will pilot the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota GR Supra in his first full season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
Chris Gayle will continue in his crew chief role. The pair won four races in 18 starts last year.
“I’m excited to get going on the 2022 season,” Gibbs said. “Monster Energy will sponsor the majority of the races, including the first one at Daytona and it’s great to have Interstate Batteries and Sport Clips on board.
“Chris Gayle and the crew guys from the 54 were great last year and hopefully we can have even more success this year. Of course, I can’t thank everyone at Toyota and TRD enough for all their support as well. I’m just ready to get going in the No. 54 Toyota GR Supra.”
Gibbs enjoyed a meteoric rise in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series from his first start last February on the Daytona International Speedway road course, where he led 14 laps and held off Austin Cindric for the win. Gibbs became the youngest road course winner in the series at 18 years, four months and 16 days—and the second-youngest winner overall (Joey Logano won at Kentucky when he was 18 years, 21 days old).
In addition to his NXS success, Gibbs won 12 ARCA Menards Series races and finished second in four additional starts en route to the series title.
Gibbs has sported the Monster Energy sponsorship since 2019. He’ll also carry the Interstate Batteries colors—a supporter of JGR since the company’s inception in 1992. For the last 14 seasons, Sports Clips has been a consistent livery on a variety of cars.
His pursuit of the NASCAR Xfinity Series title begins Saturday in the “Beef It’s What’s for Dinner 300” at Daytona International Speedway.
