Daytona Beach, Fla.—Rick Hendrick said on Thursday he wanted Chase Elliott and William Byron to be with Hendrick Motorsports “forever.”
On Sunday, HMS moved one step closer to making that a reality.
Hendrick announced a five-year extension for Elliott that will keep the 26-year-old racer in the No. 9 Chevrolet through 2027.
“I feel so fortunate to be in this position,” said Elliott, who has 13 wins in 221 starts. “I have a great team with leadership from Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) and the support of the best car owner and racing organization in the world. For me, there’s a lot of pride in driving for Hendrick Motorsports and having the opportunity to win races and compete for championships. We are capable of accomplishing a lot more and it starts today.”
Elliott signed with HMS in 2011. In his six full seasons in the NASCAR Cup Series, Elliott has qualified for Playoffs every year. He won rookie honors in 2016 and the title four years later. Elliott has advanced to the Round of 4 for the last two Cup seasons.
“Chase is a champion on and off the track,” said Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “His talent inside the race car is undeniable, and he’s just scratching the surface of what he can do. This is a young man who is mature beyond his years, comes from an incredible family, and is humble, hardworking and never takes anything for granted. As long as Chase is driving, we want him right here with Hendrick Motorsports. This is an exciting way to start the season, and we look forward to many, many more together.”
Elliott’s current contract runs through the end of 2022. He has been voted NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver for the last four years. Elliott rolls off 11th for the 64th Annual Daytona 500.
Hendrick also expects to announce an extension for Byron soon.
