Xavier Doney triumphs at Lakeside Speedway

KANSAS CITY,, Kansas — Friday night the Wholesale Batteries USAC MWRA Sprint Car series invaded Lakeside Speedway with Xavier Doney of Odessa, Missouri, taking a hard fought win over Jack Wagner, Lone Jack (Mo), Samuel Wagner, Lone Jack,(Mo), Braydon Cromwell, Lone Jack, (Mo), and Riley Kreisel, Warsaw, (Mo) completing the top 5.

All five of these drivers fought hard to get their  final position at the front of the leader board, with Doney driving the Doney-Lawson 74, and Jack Wagner in the JHR-WBR Racing 77, fighting it out until the final lap to see who would take home the first place prize. Ultimately, that would be Doney, winning his third all-time feature with series after stalking Jack Wagner for much of the second half of the 25 lapper, before seizing a opportunity to pass his rival in traffic. Afterwards,  Doney, the 2021 Rookie of the year with MWRA called the track “Technical but racy” stating further “There was a patch of moisture I found about three lanes off the bottom coming out of two that I used to gain momentum going down the backstretch and into three that was very helpful to my race to the win”. Meanwhile, Samuel Wagner was working his late race magic to another podium finish in the Wagner Boys Racing 73, his third podium finish with MWRA in 2024 in three points paying starts. With Cromwell finishing 4th in the Cromwell Racing 4, after winning earlier at ECS, to give the Lone Jack contingent 3 out of the top 4 spots, and Kreisel racing his F5 mount to its best result so far in 2024 coming home 5th.

Several heavy hitters finished in places 6th through 10th with Kory Schudy, Battlefield, (Mo) in 6th, Bonham, Texas, gunner Kobe Simpson in 7th, (Country Kids) Hard Charger award winner Luke Howard of Overland Park, Kansas, advancing 11 spots from 19th to take 8th place. While point leader coming into the night Taylor Walton of Odessa, (Mo) would run to ninth, and defending series champ Wyatt Burks of Topeka, (Ks) completed the top 10 at Lakeside Friday night. In the feature, Natalie Doney, of Odessa, (Mo), would also flip the Lewis Racing machine, with Natalie okay, but the car unfortunately receiving extensive front end damage.

Earlier in the evening three heat races were conducted for the 23 combatants with Kreisel wining the first heat. Xavier Doney the second heat after a great battle with Simpson. And Cromwell, coming from the back to earn high point honors for the night after besting Walton at the line by (00.23) seconds in heat race number three.

KARRICK, BRENT, NOLL, DISHONG, MICK

By Rick Staley

KANSAS CITY, Kansas -- First, I would like to thank all Drivers and Fans for another great night of racing. Special thanks to Tim Gifford for the beautiful invocation and Justin Lawson for honoring our Troops and America by singing our National Anthem. I sincerely apologize for the late night as we strive to get better each week and hope you choose Lakeside as your Friday Night destination and entertainment.

With heat race winners #15 Ed Noll, #6 John Snyder and #64 Kaelob Jones all toward the front and ready to do battle, Pure Stock would set the stage for a great night of racing action. Ed Noll would take the early lead and hold off early race charges by Jones and Snyder as Jeff Goepferich Jr #67 started his march to the front. Noll would continue to lead as Jones would develop issues taking him from win potential as Snyder would hold steady in third. As the checkers were waved, Ed Noll would capture his first win in a Pure Stock and celebrate in Nextran Victory Lane with Goepferich Jr a very close second. Snyder would place a solid third with big mover #7 Marshall Jewett racing his way to fourth. The “Alien” #9 Don Marrs would have a good feature rounding out the night’s top five.

E-Mod would not hesitate to enter the fast, smooth racing surface and prove they were up to the challenge. The two heat race winners #54L of Chris Dishong and #6 Zach Boyd would race side by side in early competition with last race feature winner Jason Parks #79J nipping at their heels. #21 Vic Tranckino would impress again as well as the always fast #61 of Jeff DeGroot as the two would put on a show racing battling for position.  Dishong would hold the front as they fiercely fought for position throughout the field. When the smoke had settled, Dishong was the winner with Parks second and Tranckino a solid third. Fourth would belong to DeGroot with the always racy and consistent #16L of Paul Lanfermann II ending the feature fifth.

USRA B-Mod Class at Lakeside is second to none with heavy hitters, Champions, former winners and Legends of our sport throughout the field. Tim Karrick #1K would have a very fast car every race of 2024 and this night would be no different as he would pick up his heat race win and start up front for the feature. Other heat winners #7J of Jake Richards and #56 of the Whitt prepared #56 driven by Shadren Turner would chase Karrick for the front. Karrick would drive a flawless race holding the top spot as Turner would move to second with the #68 Kerry Davis racing his way to yet another top five as Chad Clancy would mount a charge. Karrick would prove skill and determination parking the #1K in Nextran Victory Lane with Turner a close second. Third would see Davis with Chad Clancy #57 fourth and Richards fading slightly to finish fifth.

Heat race winners in USRA Stock Cars were #74 Rodney Schweizer, #42C Kasey Sheilds and #91 Jaylen Wettengel. Schweizer would follow up his heat race win by charging out front and appear to be the car to beat as the rest of the pack would follow. Racing two and three wide, Wettengel would race fast and furious challenging with Sheilds in the mix. As shields would make a move on Schweizer up top, contact would send Sheilds hard into the wall collecting several competitors with Aiden Ayers ending up on his top. All drivers were ok but heavy damage to the cars as the ensuing restart would see a lot of action. Wettengel would get by Schweizer taking over the lead as Brent Fielder #32 would come from deep in the field to challenge with one of the more impressive runs of 2024. Last turn of the last lap Fielder would make his move and pass Wettengel to claim his first USRA Stock Car win of 2024 at Lakeside. As Fielder would celebrate the win, Wettengel would place second with Schweizer slipping slightly to finish third. Last year’s Track Champion Darren Schmidt #85 would race to place fourth with Chris Dishong #16S rounding out the night’s top five.

Friday night the Wholesale Batteries USAC MWRA Sprint Car series invaded Lakeside Speedway with Xavier Doney of Odessa, Missouri, taking a hard fought win over Jack Wagner, Lone Jack (Mo), Samuel Wagner, Lone Jack,(Mo), Braydon Cromwell, Lone Jack, (Mo), and Riley Kreisel, Warsaw, (Mo) completing the top 5.

Ultimately, that would be Doney, winning his third all-time feature with series after stalking Jack Wagner for much of the second half of the 25 lapper, before seizing a opportunity to pass his rival in traffic.

In the feature, Natalie Doney, of Odessa, (Mo), would also flip the Lewis Racing machine, with Natalie okay, but the car unfortunately receiving extensive front-end damage.

Sport Compact heat race winner #31 Brad Mick would use a front row starting position to propel him to the lead early in the feature with #55 David Miller in tow. Mick would not be denied and picked up the feature win with Miller second and #17H of Clint Haigler third. Fourth would see #10 Hunter Throckmorton with the #6X of Franklin Reed ending the feature fifth.
