Grossenbacher, Zoubek triumph at Eagle Raceway

EAGLE, Nebr. — Wow!! What a beautiful evening Saturday as Empire Fence and Rotella’s presented Moms Rule Night at America’s Home Track, Eagle Raceway. Low 80’s temperatures and a nearly clear blue sky with a few wispy clouds greeted the large crowd itching for some great racing action on the high banks.

There were 2 serious incidents in the preliminary action, both in the heats for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Heat 2 saw the field coming to the initial green flag when Troy Sanford’s #12 got up over the tail tank of Nate Thompson’s 3T and went end over end down the front stretch. Then, in heat #3 a similar accident occurred as once again the field came out of turn 4 at the end of lap 1. Alex Salzman in the 2A and the 11 of Chad Koch made contact, causing Salzman to slow dramatically. That resulted in Cody Ledger’s 47 to hop Salzman’s right rear tire and go barrel rolling past the flag stand. Neither driver was seriously injured but both cars were too badly damaged to return to racing.

The A1 Iron IMCA Stock cars were first up for their A Main. Tim Drake put the 55X out front on lap 1 with Tyler Jackson’s 13T, the 24T of Tommy Etherton and the 5B of Matt Boucher rounding out the top 4. Lap 2 saw the yellow lights come on in the corners when Riley Ruisinger spun out on the front stretch in the 7. Etherton passed Jackson for second on the restart and snagged the lead the following time around. A caution for debris in turn 1 on lap 4 slowed the action again. Jackson went to the pits with a flat left rear tire, moving the 5ELI of Marty Steinbach into fourth. Steinbach passed Boucher on the restart to take over third. Arie Schouten passed Boucher on lap 8 to put the 99RE into fourth. 2 laps later Steinbach advanced to second. JJ Baumli passed Schouten with 8 to go, putting the #46 into fourth. Schouten and Baumli traded fourth the next 2 laps until Nick Beckman took over fourth in the 22 with just 4 laps remaining. Jeff Watts looped the #66 on the front stretch with 3 to go for another yellow.  Beckman then advanced to third on the restart. Baumli again moved to fourth the next time around but Schouten regained the spot with 2 to go. There were no other lead changes. The final top 4 were Etherton, Drake, Beckman and Schouten.

This was Etherton’s first victory in this, his rookie year in the class. He said “This is my first year in the stock car class and this is just our fourth race in the car. It’s all due to Jeremy Leiting; he really gets this car rolling. Also, my Dad. Mark does all of our shocks and a lot of other great help that makes this car go around. I started fourth tonight, so just a little work to do to get to the front. Once I got out front I kind of calmed down. I found my lane on the bottom in turns 1 and 2 and then around the top in 3 and 4. I want to thank my wife, my Mom and Dad and my whole family”. Tommy’s sponsors include Leiting Motorsports, Slider Chassis,
The Load Shop, Shriners Hospitals, Bill and Marna Johnson, Findlay Chiropractic, Stranik Countertops and Parkay Inc.

Next up was the finale for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. On lap 1 Shawn Pospisil got sideways coming out of turn 4 in his 6SJ, collecting the 33J of Josh Pfeiffer. Pospisil went to the pits on the hook with a badly damaged rear end. Pfeiffer also left the track behind a tow truck. The first official lap saw James Hines’ 31R, Gary Saathoff’s 96, the 15 of Tyler Deeke and Derek Hall’s 44D out front. Deeke moved up to second on lap 2. The next lap saw Saathoff pass Hines for the lead. Amber Cook put the #9 into fourth on lap 5 as Hall moved up to second. Cole Wayman passed Cook on lap 7 to put the 18W into the fourth spot. Jacob Swanson spun the 31S out at the bottom of turns 1 and 2 the next lap for a caution. Wayman moved up to third on the restart, moving Hines back to fourth. Wayman continued his charge to the front the following circuit, passing Hall for second as Adam Vrbka put the 7V into fourth. Wayman slid under Saathoff with 7 to go, taking over the lead. At the checkers it was Wayman, Saathoff, Hall and Vrbka.

Cole’s victory came after starting outside of row 8 on the starting grid and marked his second consecutive victory at Eagle Raceway. I kidded Cole about not getting third in the IMCA feature to complete his repeat of last week’s finishes, to which he replied “I wish I could have won them both, but the sportmod ran just super good. I made the top work tonight. I had to do something because everybody was riding around the bottom. Once I moved up there I was hoping for no cautions, but we got a couple. It still worked out for us”. Cole’s sponsors include Vermeer High Plains, Fox Automotive, Zoz Farms, Hertz Car Rental , Kings Auto Supply , Cherney Enterprises, LLC and Uribe Refuse.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds rolled out next for their Feature. James Mesenbrink led lap 1 in the 33M with Nate Thompson’s 3T, the X52 of Sean Manning and Bob Zoubek’s 5S close behind. Mesenbrink slowed in turns 3 and 4 the next time around for a caution. Thompson, Manning, Zoubek and the 27 of Clint Homan were the resulting top 4. There was a big scramble on the restart with Zoubek moving to second behind Thompson, Homan taking over third and the 8A of Dustin Andersen in fourth. Andersen got past Homan for third on lap 7 after Homan made contact with Zoubek. The next lap saw another caution for debris from Homan’s car in turns 3 and 4, moving Homan to the rear of the field. Zoubek passed Thompson on the restart for the lead as Johnny Saathoff put the 96J into fourth place. Lap 8 saw another slowing of the field for debris in turns 3 and 4 sending him to the rear of the field. Mike Densberger’s 81 advanced to fourth on the restart. Chad Andersen passed Densberger on the next circuit to put the 8C into fourth. Chad Andersen passed Dustin 2 laps later for third. Chad Andersen got past Thompson for second with 6 laps remaining. 2 laps later Densberger passed Dustin Andersen for fourth. Chad Andersen tried a huge slide job into turn 4 the final time around but Zoubek turned under him to take the checkers. Chad Andersen was second, Thompson came home third with Densberger holding on for fourth.

This was a welcome victory for Bob after missing the last half of the season in 2023 with shoulder problems. Bob started from outside the third row on the starting grid. He related “Nate Thompson and I kind of went at it for a while, but finally on that restart I cleared him and went to the top. The car wasn’t the best and I almost spun out once. But I gathered it up from there and took off. At the end Chad Andersen made it really interesting, putting a clean slide job on me but I held on to win by a nose”. Bob’s sponsors include BBR racing, Noonan Industries, City Slickers, Klein Construction, Kramer Storage and Pracheil Farms.

Brad Schreiner out the #10 out front of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock Main followed by the 17T of Troy Dowty, Tanner Dowty in the 7T and Ian Roschewski’s 2. Roschewski moved up to third on lap 2 with Ryan Gilland also getting past Tanner Dowty to put the 46 into fourth. The yellow flag was brought out the next lap when the 69 of Kenny Roberts and Matt Rotschafer’s 14R spun out in turns 1 and 2. Gilland advanced to third one lap after the restart with Adam Wasserman putting the 41 into fourth. Schreiner dropped to the infield the following lap with a flat right rear tire, allowing Wasserman to grab the lead with Gilland second Tanner Dowty third and the 2C of Dave Carter fourth but Dan Markham’s #6 brought out the yellow flag. The restart saw Tanner Dowty out front, Gilland second, Roschewski third and Carter fourth. Roschewski looped it in turns 1 and 2 a lap after the restart for yet another caution. That moved the 19H of Colin Hein, who had transferred from the B Feature into fourth. Carter jumped into the lead 1 lap after the restart with a big move around the top of the track, but Gilland moved to first the next time around with Tanner Dowty following him into second, Carter fell to third and Hein held onto fourth place. 2 laps later Carter passed Tanner Dowty to take over second and passed Gilland for the lead the next lap. Hein moved up to third with 6 to go. Travis Landauer put the #45 into fourth with 4 to go. Chrysta Stransky spun the #39 out at the bottom of turn 4 the next lap and the yellow lights again were lit in the corners. Carter went too high in 1 and 2 on the restart, allowing both Gilland and Tanner Dowty to pass him. There were just 3 circuits left when Dan Markham again caused a caution. The last lap saw Hein momentarily pass Gilland for the lead but Gilland was able to regain the lead and take the win. Gilland, Hein, Landauer and Wasserman were your top 4.
Ryan stated “That was a good race. It was a good track tonight. It was a little slick off of turn 4; I couldn’t quite get enough traction there and that’s where everyone was catching me. I was good in 1 and 2, and we won it so that’s all that matters. I really want to thank my crew because I couldn’t do this without them”. Ryan’s sponsors include Ironwood Builders, Paul Scholl Construction, Winelectric, JTR Logistics, Burrows Tract and Real Estate, Weber Home Inspections, Gilland Electric and Gilland Builders.

The finale for the evening’s action was the A Feature for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car s. The initial attempt at a start was called back when Chad Koch jumped the start. On the second try Trevor Grossenbacher took off from the front row and grabbed the lead on lap 1 with Jay Russell in the 76 second, Chad Koch third in the #11 and Ty Ledger’s 53L rounding out the top 4. Unfortunately, the start was called back when Shayle Bade looped her #03 on the front stretch to avoid a slowing Josh Riggins in the #14J who had made contact with the implement tire at the bottom of turns 3 and 4, causing front end damage. She ended up collecting the 51 of Mike Boston who had his push bumper ripped off when Tige Jensen made contact while trying to squeeze past Boston on the outside. Boston was pushed to the infield, ending his night. When a lap was finally in the books Ty Ledger put the 53L out front, Grossenbacher was second, Russell was third with Koch holding onto fourth. Grossenbacher went high and took the lead from Ledger on lap 2 with Koch advancing to third. Russell retook third the next lap. Cole Vanderheiden got past Koch on lap 6 to put the 15V into fourth before passing Russell for third the ensuing lap. Russell retook the third spot from Vanderheiden on lap 15. Lapped traffic began to come into play, allowing Ledger to close on Grossenbacher. Grossenbacher managed to put a lapped car between himself and Ledger in the closing laps for the win. Ledger, Russell and Vanderheiden rounded out the top  4.

This was Trevor’s first win of the 2024 season. He said “It doesn’t hurt to start up front, but you have to capitalize on it. It also makes it really difficult because it’s hard to judge how you’re doing. You have to judge yourself off of the lapped cars. I was doing really well until the last 10 laps when the lapped cars started to get really fast. I ended up moving down and finding a lane of rubber in turns 3 and 4 about a car length below the cushion. I felt pretty good there. I don’t know how good we really were, but I felt really good. That was a heck of a run for Ty. He’ll get one really soon. He’s starting to run really good”. Trevor’s sponsors include Ron Fox Motorsports, Silver Ridge, WC’s, Gregg Masonry, Cornhusker Heating and Air, Husker Diesel, Speedway Motors, Star’s Raymono’s Pizza, Stop ‘N Shop and Stewart Alley Memorial.
