Pospisil Charges late to win Malvern Bank West Series Opener at Central Missouri Speedway

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — Tad Pospisil opened his Malvern Bank Super Late Models West Series title defense with a hard-fought win in Saturday’s main event at Central Missouri Speedway.

The high-banked 3/8 mile oval in Warrensburg, Missouri was the sight of the 2024 season opener for the Malvern Bank West Series. The night saw three new faces to the series as 16-year-old Tyler Kuykendall, Andy Bryant and Jimmy Dowell all made their debuts with the tour. They and 21 others packed the pit area for a chance to win the inaugural Cliff Harris Memorial.

Defending East Series Champion, Chad Holladay, was also in attendance. The Muscatine, Iowa native started the night off right as he set the fastest time in qualifying time trials with a 14.355 second lap. Meanwhile, Nebraska drivers swept the heat race wins as Jake Bridge, Tad Pospisil and Brian Kosiski were all victorious.

After passing and finishing points were calculated, it was Iowa’s JC Wyman sitting on pole position for the 25-lap main event with Brian Kosiski to his outside. Wyman jumped out to the early lead and showed the way out in front going into the first two cautions of the race.

The first yellow flag flew for debris in turn one on lap six. Two laps later, the second caution came out for a spin in turn four.

From there, Wyman continued to lead while Pospisil and Jesse Sobbing worked their ways to the last two podium spots. Holladay, meanwhile, was locked into a tight battle for fourth against 2023 West Series Rookie of the Year, Dylan Sillman.

The turning point of the race happened with only eight laps to go as Wyman hugged the bottom lane defending the lane from Pospisil. Wyman hit one of the infield tractor tires as he exited turn four and then caught another going into turn one. The contact caused the left side of his car’s nose to fold under the left front tire causing a loss in speed and traction.

Wyman fought valiantly to keep the lead from Pospisil, but the West Series Champion found his way to the lead as the two came off turn four coming to just three laps to go. The pass was completed just before the caution came out for a car that went over the edge of the track.

The 3-lap dash to the finish saw Pospisil break out to a safe distance while the remainder of the top five spots were up for grabs. Pospisil ran out the final three circuits, and the Norfolk, Nebraska driver picked up his 39th career win with the Malvern Bank Series. His win also makes him the fifth different winner in five races at Central Missouri Speedway and snapped a 25-race drought.

Holladay narrowly edged out Wyman for second while Wyman brought it home third. Andrew Kosiski made a big charge late to finish fourth after starting 11th, and Jesse Sobbing rounded out the top five.

With Warrensburg settled, the Malvern Bank East Series picks back up with a huge Memorial Day Weekend tripleheader. May 24-26, the tour will make stops at Davenport, Maquoketa and Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedways. As for the West Series, rounds 2 and 3 take the tour to Nebraska on May 31st and June 1st. On the 31st, the tour visits the Beatrice Speedway in Beatrice and follows that up with the first of 2 visits to Norfolk, Nebraska’s Off-Road Speedway.
