EAGLE, Nebr. — It was another beautiful evening Saturday as another large crowd filed through the front gates of Eagle Raceway as Hotsy presented School’s Out For Summer. Believe me when I say that the fans were not disappointed with the show the racers put on for them. 145 cars filled the pits resulting in 18 heats, 2 C Features, 4 B Features and 5 A Mains. Action from the first green flag to the final checkers kept those in attendance on the edge of their seats.

There were 2 major incidents in the preliminary racing. In the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock B Feature Troy Dowty’s 17T hit the implement tire at the back pit entrance hard, taking the rear end out of the car before coming to a halt in turn 4. Then, in the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver B Feature Ty Ledger got too high in turn 1 just after the checkered flag and ended up climbing the wall in turn 2 before coming to rest facing the wrong way. Neither driver was seriously injured but those marked the end of racing for both of them.

The A1 Iron IMCA Stock Car Main Event saw Austin Boucher lead lap 1 in the 5A followed by Dylan Haney’s 12X, the 3 of Dan Jackson and Matt Boucher’s 5B. Haney grabbed the lead coming out of turn 4 on lap 2 with Mike Scheinost putting the #51 into fourth. Kyle Vanover made a huge move the next lap, jumping all the way into second in the 19 with Jackson third and Matt Boucher fourth. Vanover took over the top spot after another circuit as Mike Nichols out the #63 into fourth. Nichols moved into the second spot the next circuit, setting up a battle between 2 of the most prolific winners in the class. Matt Boucher regained fourth place the next time around. Lap 7 saw the caution lights lit when Austin Boucher spun at the bottom of turns 3 and 4. The restart saw Kevin Betzen loop his #42 in turns 1 and 2 to slow the action again. Nichols passed Vanover for the lead on the ensuing restart. Marty Steinbach’s 5ELI and the 17TK of Travis Patterson came to a halt at the bottom of turn 4 on lap 9. With 7 circuits remaining Scheinost spun in turn 4. Tyler Jackson’s 13T hit the spin cycle coming out of turn 2 on the restart. Arie Schouten took advantage of the restart to put the 99RE into fourth place. Despite the best efforts of Vanover, Nichols would not be headed. The final top 4 were Nichols, Vanover, Jackson and Schouten.

Nichols stated “It’s pretty tough to beat the 19 anywhere, let alone at Eagle Raceway so I’m really going to enjoy this one!”. Nichols’ sponsors include Woodhouse Auto Family, Peterson Motors, SSS Motorsports, KS Engineering, B&B Racing Chassis and Moser Engineering.

Dion Kovar took advantage of his pole position on the starting grid of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A to put the 18 out front on lap 1, followed by the 8X of Justin Bell, Beau Riffel in the 413 and the 31R of James Hines. Joe Feyen vaulted all the way up to second on lap 2 in the 25X. Trevor Noonan took over fourth the next time around in his #66, only to lose the spot to Noah Williams’ 27W the following lap. Williams moved up to third on lap 7 with Mason Richards putting the 18M into fourth. Noonan regained the fourth position with 8 to go and advanced to third the next lap, moving Williams back to fourth. Cole Wayman put the 18W into fourth with 5 circuits left. Feyen made his move coming out of turn 4 to lead by a nose at the flag stand but Kovar got back past him for the win. Feyen was second with Noonan third and Wayman fourth.

This marked Dion’s second A Feature win at Eagle after a gap of several years. He related “It was a good run. After a whole season of bad runs, this win feels a little extra special. I’m happy to get it done finally. We’ve been in the claim area a bunch of times, but this year we’ve had just a lot of struggles, DNF’s; just trying to figure out this car. Morale was at a season low so this was a really BIG win for us. I want to thank my Dad because without him we could never get the car here to the track every week. Also, my crew for all of the hard work that they do to give me the chance to win. A special thanks to the whole Banana Gang, my beautiful wife, my son who turns 1 tomorrow. This win is extra special being able to get it for his birthday”. Dion’s sponsors include Nice Kars, SRC Builders, RC’s Pit Stop and Steve Brown. Dion added “Actually, the left rear quarter panel is empty, so anyone who’s out there wanting to sponsor a Sportmod needs to hit us up on Facebook.

The Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modifieds rolled out next for their A Feature. Shawn Harker’s 40, the 13J of Jared Deterding, Norm Ziegenbein in the 1Z and Scott  Bivens’ 21H were the top 4 after 1 lap. Bivens jumped up to second on lap 2. Bob Zoubek moved into fourth the next time around in his 5S and advanced to third the following circuit. Chad Andersen put the 8C into fourth on lap 7. The yellow flag flew with 7 laps left when Sean Manning spun out in turns 3 and 4. Bivens took over the top spot on the restart as John Saathoff put the 96J into fourth. Zoubek moved into the second spot 2 laps later. Andersen moved up to third with 4 to go. The final change in the top 4 came on the last lap as Zoubek passed Bivens for the lead coming out of turn 4 with Bivens second, Andersen third and Harker fourth.

This was Bob’s second victory at Eagle this season. He said “That was a very tight race, very aggravating I guess. It was a very clean race and I came out on top. I got up to third or fourth pretty fast and then the bottom was better but Harker and Bivens were down there and I couldn’t seem to get down to the bottom. So, I was going around the top, making ground on one end and losing it on the other. I started cutting the corner a little short and banging the cushion. I don’t know if Scott slipped up a little bit or what, but I got by him. I really want to thank Baker Boys Racing. Those guys have really been helping me, getting my stuff going in the right direction. Also, Noonan Enterprises for all of their help”. Bob’s sponsors include BBR racing, Noonan Industries, City Slickers, Klein Construction, Kramer Storage and Pracheil Farms.

Nick Jensen spun the 48J out in turn 4 on the initial start of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A. The first official lap saw Fletcher Petersen put the 33 out fronts followed by Brandon Fisher’s 25, the 69 of Kenny Roberts and Ben Becher in the B4. Roberts moved up to second on lap 2 with Becher advancing to third and Fisher falling back to fourth. Dillon Richards vaulted all of the way up to second in the 24R on lap 3. Ryan Gilland moved into fourth on lap 6. Richards passed Petersen for the lead the next time around. John Cain put the 44X into fourth on lap 6 and moved up to third the next lap. Lap 8 saw Petersen spin to the infield but got off the track allowing the racing to continue. At that time, it was Richards, Cain, Roberts and Dave Carter’s 2C your top 4. 7 to go saw Tanner Dowty spin the 7T out on the front stretch with a broken rear end to slow the action. Cain also pulled to the infield, ending his night. At that point, your top 4 were Richards, Roberts, Carter and the 3N of Neil Pella. Carter used the restart to take the second spot from Roberts. The final lap saw Adam Wasserman put the 41 into fourth, making your top 4 Richards, Carter, Roberts and Wasserman.

I asked Dillon if he wasn’t getting bored with winning, to which he replied “No, I love it!! That’s why we all do it. A DNF 2 weeks in a row helped us to win the last 2 races here to go with a win at the Icebreaker. We’ll take it. I want to thank my sponsors and everyone else that helps out. Also, my Mom, my wife, my crew chief and everybody else that puts in time on my car”. Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Extreme Motorsport, Brock Ackerman, Brian Jurgens, Ben Tart Construction, Dad, Johnny Thomas Racing, Nelson Tree Service, S and L Trenching, Jer’s Restoration and Fabrication, Cat’s Fireworks, Freese Farms, Inline Healing, The Rail Rocks, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, In Loving Memory JR Craig-Denise, Troy Cepak, Popeye Engines & Carbs, Landrum Performance Springs, Speedway Shocks, Jet Racing, Backspin Entertainment and Aero Race Wheels.

Brandon Horton’s 1B, the 14TK of Tyler Hendrickson, Alex Salzman in the 2A and the 63 of Jack Thomas were the first 4 back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver A. Salzman got past Hendrickson on lap 2 for second. 2 laps later Cody Ledger passed Thomas for fourth in his #47. Hendrickson jumped up to second on lap 13 as Trevor Grossenbacher put the 35 into fourth. Grossenbacher moved up to third the following circuit and then to second the next lap as Cody Ledger put the 47 into third. Mike Boston grabbed the fourth spot the following time around in his #51. Grossenbacher was running lap times of a second faster than Horton and finally caught up to him with 6 to go. Grossenbacher put a slide job on Horton in turns 3 and 4 on the final lap but Horton crossed over and held on for the win. Grossenbacher was second, Ledger third and Boston fourth.

This was Brandon’s second Eagle Raceway victory in 2024. He related “We made it happen on that first corner which really was an advantage. Leading all of those laps out front on your own is huge. With 5 laps to go we caught some lapped traffic and I don’t think I got onto the rubber quick enough with Grossenbacher running behind me. That’s when he made up a lot of ground on me. I could hear him coming for a lot of laps, so I’m just glad we didn’t have 1 more lap in this race because I don’t know if it would have wound up in my favor”. I mentioned that Grossenbacher almost got him coming out of turn 4 on the last lap and he said “OH! Holy Cow!! I gave it my all to get to the checkered flag  the soonest, and we barely pulled it off but he was right there. It’s been 2 or 3 years since I won here but this year has been good to us”. Brandon’s sponsors include Lazy Days RV, Slideways Customs Inc., Omaha Barbell, TSG Tax Services, West Omaha Jet Ski and Real Smokey Barbeque.

Next Saturday is Destination Eagle Night, presented by Avid Realty and Empire Fence. Front gates open at 5:15 with adult admission being $15, youths 6-12 are just $5 and kids 5 and under are free.
