Corey Day pockets $76,000 for winning Dirt Cup

ALGER, Wash. — Corey Day wrote his name into Skagit Speedway history with a win at the 52nd Annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup. Day became part of the first father/son duo to win Dirt Cup, with his father Ronnie winning in 2000. The win paid Day a total of $79,600 in finish position and laps led money.

Zeb Wise led the opening 11 laps before Day marched into the top spot, using the high groove to whip around Wise for the lead on lap 12. Corey quickly put distance between himself and the field, with Wise falling into a furious battle with Cole Macedo and Jason Solwold for the runner up spot. The group fought for a few laps while Corey built his advantage, with Wise eventually re-securing second. By then, it was far too late as Day had enough track space and slower traffic between the two to drive comfortably to the win. Wise would claim runner up for the second straight year, with Macedo picking up third. Wise was the winner of the pole shuffle. Hunter Schuerenberg won the B Main and Levi Kuntz won the C. Four heat races were run to determine the back half of the pole shuffle starters. Those heat wins went to Jason Solwold, Justyn Cox, Cole Macedo and Colby Copeland.

The dual between Jared Peterson and Shane Smith at the front of the field in the NW Focus Midget series A Main lived up to the billing at the end. Peterson got the jump and set the pace, but as he rolled into traffic, Smith rolled right up to his rear bumper and spent the back half of the main bird dogging him all around the track. Peterson was up to the task, never leaving a large enough gap for Smith to drive under or around him to take the win. Smith was second and Alex Peck was third.
