Zeitner Defends Hampel Memorial Title at Adams County
CORNING, Ia. — Justin Zeitner made his return to victory lane with the Malvern Bank Super Late Models West Series after Saturday’s visit to the Adams County Speedway.
The big half-mile in Corning, Iowa was the sight for the third round for the West Series. The night was the final stop of what was a 4-day swing after three East Series races, but after 2 of the 3 races were rained out, many East Series regulars made the trip to Corning for a chance at a $3,000 payday. It was big night for the West series as Saturday’s event was the third running of the Gail and Karen Hampel Memorial.
Jesse Sobbing put up the fastest time in qualifying after topping group A with a 20.716 second lap. Justin Zeitner was the fastest in group B when he stopped the clock at 20.898 seconds. The four heat races on the night were won by Kyle Berck, Andy Eckrich, Corey Zeitner, and Bill Leighton Jr. Leighton would earn enough points to be the Skyline Materials Lucky 6th Place Starter. The nightly award was up to $600 if Leighton could win the feature from 6th.
Later in the night, 28 cars took to the speedway for the 25-lap main event. Kyle Berck jumped from the outside of the front row to take the early lead. However, his lead and race were short-lived as Berck’s motor gave out. He would pull into the pit after only three laps handing the lead to pole sitter JC Wyman.
Like Berck, Wyman also had a short time in front as Chad Holladay took the lead just two laps after Wyman took the spot from Berck. From there, the Reigning East Series Champion showed the way while Wyman and Leighton did everything they could to chase him down.
The first caution came out with only ten laps left when Mike Collins’ engine when up in smoke. Racing resumed only for one lap before Leighton went down with a flat left-rear tire while running in the third spot. His crew would change the tire allowing Leighton to come back to finish 17th.
On the ensuing restart, Holladay led while Justin Zeitner charged off the top lane of the speedway running second. Zeitner would make the go-ahead move for the lead as he tried to slide Holladay for the lead. The two made contact, but Zeitner was able to complete the overtake.
The race would stay green the rest of the distance, and it was Justin Zeitner who claimed victory taking home the Hampel Memorial trophy for the third year in a row. It was Zeitner’s fourth win with the Series at Adams County Speedway and his 18th career series victory which is fourth most all-time.
JC Wyman recorded his best finish of the year with a second-place finish while Chad Holladay took third. Jesse Sobbing came in fourth, and Corey Zeitner rounded out the top five.
The Malvern Bank Super Late Models Series is off for the Independence Day weekend, but action will pick back up with the first Dual race of the year. For the first time of the year, it will be East vs. West at the Shelby County Speedway in Harlan, Iowa for the Rallen Zeitner Memorial on July 13th. Then, the West Series will gear up for back-to-back nights at Huset’s Speedway in South Dakota for the Silver Dollar Nationals on July 19 and 20.
