Tanner Mullins victorious in USMTS at Mason City

MASON CITY, Ia. — The Pritchard Family Auto Stores Mason City Motor Speedway welcomed back the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt on Saturday for the second of three nights for the 11th Annual USMTS North Iowa Nationals presented by Kabrick Distributing.
Two-time USRA Modified National Champion Tyler Davis took a slight edge at the drop of the green flag but it was Tanner Mullens getting the advantage and leading the opening lap of the 40-lapper.
Within a few laps, Mullens was about two seconds ahead of his nearest pursuer while Davis battled with Jim Chisholm to preserve the second spot.
The race's second Gorsuch Performance Solutions caution flag waved just past the halfway point and Jake Timm used that to his advantage to jump up to third and join Chisholm in the case for the lead.
With 12 laps to go, Chisholm gave it a whirl and slipped in front of Mullens with a slide through turns three and four, but Mullens crossed underneath and beast his rival back to the flagstand to remain in first place.
Chisholm dropped back about six car lengths and then had to deal with Timm trying to weave his way into the runner-up spot. He held his ground and with four laps left to go, the top three were racing nose to tail.
Like the night before, lapped traffic played into the end of Saturday night's jaw-dropping show.
With one of them between them at the finish line, Mullens went high and Chisholm stayed low with Mullens getting the $5,000 win with about half of a car length to spare.
“I just tried to slow down and save as much as I could. But as soon as I seen (Chisholm) I just gave it all I had” Mullens said in Victory Fuel Victory Lane. “We were struggling a little bit down there (turn one). I knew he could roll the bottom a lot better than we could… For the year we've had we'll take it.
We always do fairly good here, so we enjoy coming. This is new car—fourth night on it—so I think changes we made have been pretty good. We'll take anything we can get at this point but (the track officials) did a really good job from earlier today to now. It's in really good shape.”
With his first win of the year—and first since winning the 25th Anniversary USMTS Silver Jubilee here last August—Mullens now has a series-best five wins at the North Iowa Action Track and registered his 11th overall career USMTS win.
On Sunday, the weekend finale in the Collins Brothers Towing USMTS North Region presented by Featherlite will see the USMTS Modifieds share the spotlight with USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks and Outlaw Mini-Mods.
