Horton, Saathoff post feature wins at Eagle Raceway

What a beautiful night Saturday as Avid Realty, Nebraska Lottery and Pepsi-Cola of Lincoln presented Fan Appreciation Night at Eagle Raceway! Occasional clouds and a strong southerly breeze set the stage for a battle on the high banks.

There was one serious incident in the preliminary action, coming in the B Feature for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprints.
The intermission entertainment was another fan favorite as everyone had the chance to purchase a water balloon and chuck them at the Eagle Raceway officials, staff and even owner Roger Hadan. All proceeds went to the non-qualifiers fund for the IMCA Racesaver Nationals. Cole Cloud flipped his #11Cin turn 2. He was not seriously injured.

Nathan Landauer took advantage of starting on the pole of the A Main for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock cars. Nate Thompson’s 3T, the 13T of Tyler Jackson and the 5J of Jakob Boucher rounding out the top 4. Thompson grabbed the lead on lap 3. Lap 4 saw Kevin Betzen pass Boucher for fourth. Dan Jackson’s 45R and the 6 of Jeremy Down spun in turns 3 and 4 the following lap for a caution. The 71JJ of Jerod Bussen spun to a halt at the bottom of turns 1 and 2 on lap 7 to slow the action again. Marty Steinbach claimed the fourth position on lap 9 in the 5ELI. Tyler Jackson passed Landauer for second place the next lap. Thompson spun out in turn 2 on lap 12 and the yellow flag flew. That moved Tyler Jackson to first, Landauer to second, Steinbach up to third and Boucher back into fourth. Betzen jumped up to third with 8 to go, moving Steinbach back to fourth. Jackson was ripping the lip while Landauer was using the low groove. Landauer used a great set of corners in 3 and 4 to take the top spot with 2 laps to go. Jackson pulled ahead of Landauer on the backstretch on the final lap but couldn’t hold on for the win Landauer going low in 3  and  4 for  the win. Jackson came home second, Betzen was third with Steinbach fourth.

Nathan used to be a regular at Eagle Raceway, running a modified but his visits have been few and far between lately. This was his first victory of the 2024 season and his first ever in a stock car. I congratulated Nathan on a great run, to which he replied “It was, thank you. I just kept plugging it on the bottom there, and the 13T was good on the high side but I stuck with it and the lapped traffic there at the end really helped me. It was a great race. It helps to start on the front row, but I also have lost a lot of races from the pole, back in the modified days racing against Chris Alcorn, Dylan Smith, Johnny Saathoff and Chris Ableson. So, I learned a lot over the years, but I only make it out 5 or 6 times a year. I’m just super thankful to be able to get this win. I have to thank my wife, my little girl Lydia, son Ethan, Randy Eliker and my Mom and Dad for all of their help and support. I also need to thank Roger for the great track tonight and the opportunity to come out here and race. I am not a weekly racer, but I know that I always have a place to go close to where I live and continue to pursue my favorite hobby.”

Nathan’s sponsors include Joe Kool Recycling, Landauer Motorsports, Doc’s Service, Jet Racing, Jono’s Racing Engines, NJLE Racing and FX Suspensions.
Lap1 of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod Feature was led by the 11H of Nick Morris, followed by the 7F of Aiden Floyd, Brady Paineau’s 53 and Jacob Swanson in the 31S. Morris spun to the infield along the back stretch on lap 2 but came back onto the track deep in the pack. That put Floyd first, Swanson second, Papineau third and the 62 of Bobby Draper in fourth. Lap 4 saw Adam Vrbka put the 7V into fourth and pass Swanson the next lap for third. Vrbka used the low line to vault into the lead on lap 7. 9 to go saw Cole Wayman take over the fourth spot in then move to third 2 laps later. The next lap saw Wayman continue his march to the front when he passed Floyd for second. Swanson moved back into the fourth position with 4 to go and passed Floyd for third the next time around. Amber Cook looped her #9 with 1 left for a caution. The restart was negated when Amber Cook’s 9 spun to a halt in turn 2. It also took away a 3 ½ second lead by Vrbka over Wayman. The green/white/checkered finish saw Wayman going low in the corners and come within a nose of passing Vrbka. Your top 4 were Vrbka, Wayman, Swanson and Floyd.

This was Adam’s third victory of the year at Eagle. I asked Adam what had changed from zero wins and the championship last year to several victories already this season. He said “We were so close last year but I think I found that little edge to get me up into the lead. Last year we finished second or third so many times, but that edge has gotten me into first place. The track was really good tonight. You could run high or low. I was running the bottom and it seemed to be working pretty good for me. When you’re in the lead it’s so hard to tell where everyone else is running. I just stuck with the bottom.” Adam’s sponsors include EZ Stop, Eagle Automotive, Long Shot Repair, Tatt’s Chicken Farm, Fritzen Farms, Skip’s Equipment Services, Wojo Painting, Mook Trucking, Razor Chassis, Conservative Car Sales and Service, Stephenson’s Truck and RV Repair, Only Pro Decaling, Unlimited Sport Solutions and Clive Bannister.

Cameron Thompson in the 2T was first back to the flag stand on the initial lap of the Nebraska Lottery IMCA Modified main event, followed closely by John Saathoff’s 96J, the X52 of Sean Manning and Jared Deterding’s 13J. Saathoff got past Thompson for the lead on lap 2 with Manning following him into second. Clint Homan  cracked the  top 4 on lap 3 in the #27. Homan moved up to third on lap 8. Terry Richards grabbed fourth the next time around in the 18. Thompson spun out in turns 1 and 2 the following lap for a caution. The restart saw Tyler Harr loop his #21T in turn 4. Homan used the restart to advance to second place as Shawn Harker put the #40 into fourth. Harker moved up to third with 9 circuits left. Bob Zoubek spun his 5S out in turn 4 with 7 to go for another restart. The caution was extended for debris on the front stretch. The final change in the top 4 came with 5 to go when Dustin Andersen moved up to fourth in the 8A. Your top 4 were Saathoff, Homan, Harker and Andersen.

This was John’s second win in a row at Eagle Raceway, and his second of the season. I asked him what had gotten into him this year, and he stated “I’ve gone old school. I put in an open motor and got away from the crate engine. I’m just having a good time at Eagle Raceway with the track that Roger preps for all of us. That cushion was nasty tonight, and it got so slick in the middle that my crate engine would have been better, but we broke ours and I don’t feel like buying another one this year. I’m on my way out and trying to use up what I have.” I told him ‘You’re only 61!”. He replied “I know it, but I keep saying I’m going to retire. I keep thinking that racing is making me young, but after tonight I’m feeling pretty old. I can hardly walk (Due to an old injury to his left ankle).” John’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Northeast Auto, Speedway Motors, Jerry Trejo at Independent Equipment, I70 Auto Auction, Rickey Thornton, Penner Insurance, Toobie’s Lumber, Clauson, and Sons and Lineweber Trenching.

The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were next onto the track. Kyle Gannon put the 66G out front on lap 1 with Brandon Fisher’s 25, the 48J of Nick Jensen third and fourth being Brayden Hurley’s 38. Fisher grabbed the lead on lap 2 with Hurley moving up to third and Dan Markham putting the 6 into fourth. Hurley jumped into the top spot on lap 3, moving Fisher to second. Fisher slipped the next time around allowing Dan Markham to second and Brad Schreiner taking over fourth in the #10. Dillon Richards passed Shreiner and Fisher for third the following lap. Richards moved up to second with 10 to go. Colin Hein put the 19H into fourth place the next circuit. Hein passed Markham for third with 5 to go. Richards got past Hurley for the lead with just 3 to go. Richards held on for the win with Hurley second, Hein third and Adam Wasserman’s 41 fourth with a final lap pass.

This was Dillon’s 7th win of the season, so I kiddingly asked Dillon why he doesn’t go somewhere where he has competition. He laughed and said “We’ve got great competition right here; I’m just banging it off the top as usual. The track felt really good, but you had to be patient. That cushion was awesome! I love it when Roger has it like that. I want to thank my crew guys Johnny, Ben, Wade and Bug plus everyone else that helps me out.” Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Extreme Motorsports, Brock Ackerman, Brian Jurgens, Ben Tart Construction, Dad, Johnny Thomas Racing, Nelson Tree Service, S and L Trenching, Jer’s Restoration and Fabrication, Cat’s Fireworks, Freese Farms, Inline Healing, The Rail Rocks, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, In Loving Memory JR Craig-Denise, Troy Cepak, Popeye Engines & Carbs, Landrum Performance Springs, Speedway shocks, Jet Racing. Backspin Entertainment, Aero Race Wheels, James Hadorn, Bud and Neapco.

Dan Nekolite’s 22d led lap 1 of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver A. Close on his push bumper were Cody Ledger in the 47, Doug Lovegrove’s 44 and Bret Klabunde’s 77. Klabunde passed Lovegrove for second on lap 2. Brandon Horton also got past Lovegrove the next time around to put 1B into fourth as Ledger moved to the lead. Lovegrove got under both Ledger and Klabunde on lap 4 to advance to third. Horton passed Lovegrove on lap 10 for third place. At that point Ledger had a ½ lap lead over the rest of the field. Joey Danly got around Lovegrove for fourth on lap 13 as Horton moved up to second. Danley advanced to third on lap 15 with Stu Snyder putting his #5 into fourth. 11 laps were remaining when Klabunde got sideways in turn 4, making contact with Ledger causing Ledger to spin. That made the top 4 Horton, Danley, Snyder and Nekolite. Snyder advanced to second place with 10 to go as Gunnar Pike put the 25into fourth. Pike got  past Danley for third the next lap. Danley regained the third position with 6 to go. Horton held on for his 3rd win of the year with Snyder second, Danley third and Pike fourth.

He related “It felt really good. This is the kind of track that I really like to drive, way up high and fairly slick. So, luckily, we were able to start towards the front of the pack right off the bat and I was able to get to the front fairly quick. Lapped traffic started to become a little concerning there with a couple of laps to go. I didn’t know whether to change my line and move down or just keep following Ackland and hope that we could get to the checkered flag first. I knew that somebody would be coming around the bottom at some point, but we pulled it off.” Brandon’s sponsors include Lazy Days RV, TSC Tax Solutions Group, Little Smokey Barbecue, West Omaha Boat and Jet ski and Omaha Barbell.

Next Saturday is Conquer the High Banks Night at Eagle Raceway, presented by Stumpy’s Custom Creations and A1 Iron.
