CJ Horn celebrates first Malvern Bank Late Model victory at Mason City

MASON CITY, Ia. — A brand-new winner was crowned on Sunday as the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series made their annual trip to Mason City Motor Speedway.

The high-banked 1/3 mile in Mason City, Iowa was the sight of the fifth dual race of the year as both East and West Series came together for battle. It was the tour’s fourth ever appearance at the speedway and the first dual race at the track.

Seven-Time Series Champion Kyle Berck was the fastest in time trials as the Marquette, Nebraska native timed in at 14.429 seconds. Iowans Chad Holladay, Jeff Tharp and Charlie McKenna were victorious in the three heat races on the night.

After the heats were decided, J C Wyman was the Skyline Materials Lucky 6th Place top point earner. He declined to start sixth for a potential $2,250 bonus, and so, Kyle Berck redrew the sixth spot, so he would have the shot at the extra money.

The field came back out for the 40-lap finale. Pole-Sitter Justin Zeitner pulled out to the race lead early on. Only a couple of laps would be completed before the only caution came out for a Charlie McKenna hitting the wall in turn three.

When racing resumed, Zeitner led while fifth-place starting C J Horn charged his way into the top three. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa driver stayed glued to the bottom of the speedway. He overtook Wyman, and before long, Horn went to challenge Zeitner for the race lead.

As the race progressed, Horn stuck to his guns on the low side while Zeitner hustled around the outside of the speedway. The duo went back and forth
exchanging the lead. Meanwhile, West Series Point Leader Bill Leighton Jr. made his way past Dylan Thornton and eventually Zeitner to get to the second spot in the closing laps.

Leighton posed a late charge at Horn for the race lead, but Horn was able to navigate the lapped traffic and keep enough speed up long enough to outduel both Leighton and Zeitner.

Horn managed to hold off the final charge from Leighton to pick up the huge upset victory. The $4,000 score is the biggest of his career. Plus, the win makes Horn the fourth different winner in four appearances for the Malvern Bank Series at Mason City, and he becomes the 48th different all-time feature winner with the series.

Leighton would have to settle for second while Dylan Thornton took third. Justin Zeitner and Corey Zeitner would round out the top five. As well, Joe Chisholm, a local modified driver who made his late model debut, charged from dead last 25th to finish in 10th.

With the Northern Iowa doubleheader in the books, the West Series will return to action on Sunday, September 8th as the tour heads to Eagle Raceway in Nebraska for the inaugural running of the Stewart Alley Memorial. It will be the final race in the Cornhusker State for the tour. After that, both tours will join back up for the Bob Maaschman Memorial at the Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa.
