Carson Macedo captures High Bank Nationals prelim

BRANDON, S.D. — Carson Macedo executed a late-race slide job to capture the BillionAuto.com Huset's High Bank Nationals presented by MENARDS preliminary night triumph on Saturday at Huset's Speedway.
Macedo's charge from eighth to win on Ace Ready Mix Night was his second career World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series victory at the high-banked track. It also set him up well as the high-points driver entering the $100,000-to-win event finale on Sunday.
"It feels good to have a lot speed here," he said. "That was fun. It feels good to win, but it's really cool when you win it from eighth like that."
Macedo was the third of three different leaders during the 35-lap main event. Hunter Schuerenberg led the first four laps before Chase Randall took over the top spot with a slide job in turn two on a restart on Lap 5.
A caution on Lap 11 for a spin by Scott Winters was followed by a caution two laps later when fifth-running Scott Bogucki got sideways and collected seventh-running Sheldon Haudenschild. Macedo had climbed into the top five by that point and drove into the runner-up position on Lap 23. The final caution came out on Lap 28 when fifth-running Schuerenberg stopped after contact with Giovanni Scelzi in turn three, setting up the final restart of the race.
Randall rocketed away on the restart, but traffic with three laps remaining allowed Macedo to close to Randall's rear bumper. One lap later, Macedo used a slide job in turn two to narrowly clear Randall for the top spot. Randall went for a slide job of his own in turns three and four, but Macedo's momentum against the cushion prevailed and he led the final two circuits to win by 0.534 seconds.
"That caution helped a lot," Macedo said. "I don't think we would have ever got to him without that restart there. We got to lapped traffic really quick there. And then the lapped cars were all over the place. I felt like I was in the cat bird's seat. Sometimes it's better to be running second in those situations."
Randall, who was going after his first career World of Outlaws win, settled for a career-best second-place showing.
"We were really, really close to getting one tonight," he said. "I think there's a couple of little things I could have done different."
Donny Schatz rounded out the podium, marking a much better outing than the previous night when he was involved in a wild heat race crash that ended his night early.
"We kind of tightened up there," he said. "It felt rolled over the whole time. We have to try to fix that if we're going to try to win this race tomorrow night."
Buddy Kofoid hustled from 17 th to fourth and Bill Balog charged from 16 th to fifth.
Emerson Axsom and Aaron Reutzel each set quick time to lead their qualifying groups. The heat races were won by Schatz, Kaleb Johnson, Randall and Bogucki. Brendan Mullen posted the C Main victory and Winters topped the Last Chance Showdown.
The BillionAuto.com Huset's High Bank Nationals presented by MENARDS concludes on Sunday during Myrl & Roy's Paving Night when the World of Outlaws feature winner will earn a whopping $100,000. The main gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps slated for 7 p.m.
