BOONE, Iowa — Another IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s, another record number of cars. With Modifieds and Stock Cars beginning qualifying today at Boone Speedway, car count for the 42nd annual Super Nationals is at 1,032, up from 1,017 last year, 1,000 in 2022 and 909 in 2021.

“We’re just going to keep building on what makes IMCA racers want to race here,” said IMCA President Brett Root. “This place hits the mark on everything drivers want, starting with a really racy track and all the other details that go with it, like the format and pit parking.

“Boone is a very, very competitive track. We added more dirt this year and continue to put the focus on where it needs to be,” he emphasized. “The event staff that makes up Super Nationals has been doing this a long time and really helps make the entire week America’s Racing Vacation.” Three divisional records have been established this year with 264 Stock Cars, 168 Hobby Stocks and 78 STARS Mod Lites.

Also seeing action over the course of the Sept. 2-7 Super Nationals at Iowa’s Action Track will be 223 Modifieds, 176 Northern SportMods, 84 Sport Compacts and 39 Late Models. Those cars come from 30 states, equaling the mark set last year, two Canadian provinces and Australia. Three champions have already been crowned, Riley Clem of Wildersville, Tenn., in the Mod Lites, Dylan Thornton of Belle Plaine in the Late Models and Brad Chandler of Cedar Rapids in the Sport Compacts.

Clem and Thornton are both California natives; Thornton was the Stock Car champion at Super Nationals last year and Chandler had been runner-up to brother Nathan in the 2011 Sport Compact event at Boone. Championship Night for the Modifieds, Stock Cars, Northern SportMods and Hobby Stocks is Saturday, Sept. 7.

QUALIFYING CHECKERS FLY FOR ANDERSON

BOONE, Iowa  -  Logan Anderson went to the top and hammered it.

As a result, he’ll be starting on the front of the outside row in the Saturday night championship event for Northern SportMods at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s.

Anderson led all 25 laps of his Tuesday night qualifier despite the very best efforts of Dylan VanWyk, who’d started 15th and ran second the last 10 circuits.

VanWyk had pulled alongside late but couldn’t  keep up the two times around following a late caution.

“I went to the top, hammered it and told myself if he passes me, he passes me, I’ll be second,” Anderson said. “It worked out in our favor. It’s awesome, after winning the Prelude (on Sunday).”

Joining Anderson and VanWyk on the outside row will be fellow top eight runners Cam Reimers, Alec Fett, Geoff Olson, Justin Addison, Will Wolf and Randy Havlik, promoted following the post-race disqualification of Cody Center.

Reimers had started 23rd, Fett 19th and Addison 20th.

Last-chance qualifying Wednesday at Boone Speedway completes the championship night grid.

KOHL, SMITH ARE WINNERS WHILE BURG PUTS ON HOBBY STOCK SHOW

BOONE, Iowa -- Jason Kohl and Mike Smith won the qualifying features and front row starting spots that come with them while Keith Burg was the show Tuesday night at Boone Speedway.

Kohl’s win in the first Hobby Stock qualifier puts him at the front of the middle row in Saturday’s main event at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. Two-time and defending champion Smith topped the nightcap and will start on the front of the outside row.

After his father and pole starter Andrew was the first car out of the first qualifier, Burg was a man on a mission, racing from 30th … dead last … all the way up to second with just three laps left.

Kohl, who had inherited the lead around midway after Adam Streeter exited with a flat tire, had his hands full staying in front following a late restart.

Burg was ahead coming out of turn two on the white flag lap but Kohl found a little extra speed and got to the checkers first, but just.

“I didn’t want that last yellow for sure,”  Kohl said. “We had a pretty good run, I had seen the white flag and I was pretty happy. Once that yellow came out I knew he would be coming hard.”

Also advancing to the middle row were top eight runners Jimmy Doescher, Brandon Bombardo, Cody Williams, Corey VanDerwilt, Dillon Richards and Tom Killen Jr.

Smith chased Calvin Dhondt the first 14 laps, finally making the move to the front on the inside line.

“I didn’t know how to get around Calvin and those restarts were scaring me,” said Smith, running second behind the first three cautions of the night and dodging debris in the form of a hood while leading after one of two yellows on lap 24. “Those guys on the bottom were getting good restarts.”

“Saturday is the hardest,” he’d add. “You’ve got all the fastest guys in the whole world up front. We’ll give it all we’ve got and see what happens.”

Joining Smith and Dhondt on the outside row will be Bradly Graham, Justin Frederick, race of champions winner Cory Probst, 28thstarting Colin Hein, Matt McDonald and Evan Schettler.

A last-chance feature on Wednesday completes the main event field of 30 cars. A Super Nationals record 168 Hobby Stocks vied for spots on that grid.

SACHAU MAKES IT THREE STRAIGHT IN SPORTMOD RACE OF CHAMPIONS

BOONE, Iowa -- Jake Sachau’s third straight Pulse Racing Innovations Race of Champions win played out a lot like his first.

Sachau led start to finish in the 12-car, 12-lap RoC for Northern SportMods Tuesday at Boone Speedway, taking the checkers ahead of Colby Fett, also the runner-up in 2022.

“Colby is really good. All these guys are really good … I was rolling out there where I went and if they got me, they got me,” said Sachau. “It just worked out really good for us.”

2018 race winner Fett finished just over a tenth of a second off Sachau’s pace after starting fifth.

Alec Fett was third, Brayton Carter fourth and Coy Vlies fifth.

“I tried a little something to see what we could do for Saturday and it wasn’t the best,” said Sachau, aiming to repeat his 2023 sweep of the race of champions and IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s main event. “We’ll go back to what we had last night (in qualifying) when we were really good.”

“Three in a row,” added Sachau, who matched Hobby Stock driver Zach Olmstead’s mark of three straight race of champions wins. “I never would have guessed I’d be able to do this.”

FAMILY IS FOCUS FOLLOWING CHANDLER'S RUN TO SPORT COMPACT CROWN

BOONE, Iowa --  The family that celebrated when Sport Compacts made their first-ever appearance at the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s got to celebrate again Tuesday night.

Brad Chandler made the most of a restart with five laps to go, motoring from third to the lead and ultimately the $1,250 checkers in the 4-cylinder headliner at Boone Speedway.

“This means a lot to my family,” said Chandler, runner-up to brother Nathan when the division debuted at Super Nationals in 2011, a race that also saw brother Dallas finish fifth and father Merv end in 10th.

“I took a couple years off. I’d finished second twice or third the next couple years and never thought I’d come back and be able to win here,” Chandler said, emphasizing his family’s support on and off the track. “It takes a lot of people to be able to do that.”

2016 champion Josh Barnes, long-time race leader Mick Rykhus and early leader Randall Martin completed the Tuesday podium.

Martin was fastest the first three times around the track, giving way to Rykhus the next time around.

A long green flag run followed with Chandler making it to third on the 14th of 25 laps. Rykhus had the field covered, building a lead of nearly two seconds, before Devin Jones, a two-time Super Nationals champ, went off the track to bring out the yellow and set the stage for Chandler’s heroics.

“The caution came out, I knew it worked on the high side, they (Barnes and Rykhus) both left it open and I just went in there hard as I could out and came out on top,” said Chandler, planning to deliver his trophy to a pre-schooler at home.

The Chandler family has a number of connections to IMCA and Super Nationals that pre-date the Sport Compact division: Merv was among the first drivers in the earliest years of the Modified division and finished third in the inaugural Super Nationals in 1983.

Eighty-four drivers from a dozen states were in Boone to make their own history at the 42nd annual Super Nationals, broadcast by IMCA.TV.

PROBST PREVAILS IN STEPHENVILLE STARTER HOBBY STOCK ROC

BOONE, Iowa  – Prelude winner Cory Probst knew all about the talent he’d be racing against in the Stephenville Starter Race of Champions.

Then he went out and beat those cars, leading start to finish of the 12-lap Hobby Stock RoC Tuesday during the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s show at Boone Speedway.

Probst drew the outside pole start and had Nathan Ballard on his back bumper or right alongside when every one of those dozen laps was scored.

“Ballard is one hell of a driver. This was a great field of drivers and I was lucky enough to hold them off,” said Probst, who’d enjoyed a dose of Boone success topping the second of two Prelude features for the Hobby Stocks on Sunday. “You never take anything for granted here. It was until I got straight out of the (last set of turns) I thought I was set.”

His margin of victory in the caution-free contest was all of three tenths of a second.

Dillon Richards, Kalyb Brunssen and Calvin Dhondt completed the top five.

Zach Olmstead was looking to extend his streak of Stephenville Starter RoC wins to four and was on his way toward the front after starting 11th, then got too high on turn two and exited before midway.

Former national and regional champions, Super National champions and RoC winners, as well as state and track champions and track point leaders were eligible to qualify for the Stephenville Starter race.

2020 national champion Probst had finished third in his one previous RoC start last September.
