BOONE, Iowa — You almost have to feel sorry for Dallon Murty and Zack VanderBeek because they missed watching any of the great battles for transfer spots behind them.

Both Murty and VanderBeek led start to finish in fast and furious Modified qualifying features Thursday night at Boone Speedway. Middle row starting spots in Saturday’s IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s Big Dance were at stake and top four finishing spots at a premium.

The first qualifier ran green the last 10 circuits and Murty took the checkers ahead of Jake McBirnie, winner of the B & B Racing Chassis All-Star Invitational earlier in the program, Chris Abelson and Kollin Hibdon.

VanderBeek was equally impressive in topping the nightcap, ahead of Jeremy Mills, 12th starting Ricky Alvarado and Johnny Whitman.

“We hadn’t had the best of luck this week,” said two-time Super Nationals Stock Car champion Murty. “I had a good run here a couple weeks ago so I came in with a lot of confidence but the stars aligned to put something together here.”

On the outside looking in when that feature was scored were defending champion Tim Ward in fifth, 2007 champion Todd Shute in sixth and 2018 champion Jeff Aikey in eighth.

VanderBeek was first pursued by Whitman, then by Mills the last 15 laps before taking his win. Alvarado raced his way into the top four before midway.

“We were in the right place at the right time. The car felt really good and I think we have the right piece for Saturday,” VanderBeek said after starting outside pole and finding the fast line from the get-go. “You had to make sure you stayed in that lane of rubber and not slide out of it and give those guys the opportunity to get around you.”

“This whole deal is so tough. You’ve got be to good and wait for your opportunities,” he added, “and capitalize on them when you do. There are a lot of fast cars that won’s be in the show on Saturday so we’ll count our blessings, thank the good Lord above and carry on.”

2021 champ Cody Laney ended that race in fifth.

Games of cornhole on Friday in the NAPA Fan Zone will determine Saturday’s starting order.

Two more Modifieds ran Thursday, putting that division’s total at 225 and helping nudge the Super Nationals car count record to 1,036.

SHRYOCK, LUTTENBURG SPEED TO STOCK CAR CHECKERS

BOONE, Iowa  – The driver might get older but the winning never gets old.

Veteran Kelly Shryock, the winner of more than 700 races over a career that spans four decades, drove from 11th starting to win the first Stock Car qualifying feature during Thursday’s IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s program at Boone Speedway.

He’d be followed to the top of the podium by Justin Luinenburg, who led every lap of fast-paced nightcap. Top four finishers from both features move on to the middle row of Saturday’s Championship Night show.

Donavon Smith and then Austen Brauner ran in first as Shryock made his way toward the front. He caught Riley Christensen for second with seven laps to go and Brauner for the point with four to go.

Kaden Reynolds and Buck Schafroth each made late charges, relegating Brauner to fourth.

“I love this more than ever. “You never know when a win is going to be your last,” said Shryock, also qualified for the Modified Dance. “I’m still having fun.”

The only caution in feature number two came on the second circuit and Luinenburg stayed smooth as silk at the front of the field, never seriously challenged in his run to the checkers.

“I’m not big on this big stage. I just try to run my race,” he said. “I didn’t feel anybody or see anybody and we were lapping cars, so we must have been doing something right.”

“I was just trying to stay focused and hit my marks every time,” he continued. “To race with the crowd that’s here, it really says something that our program has really come along.”

Drivers with Super Nationals titles already on their resumes rounded out the top four behind him, 2012 SportMod king Nick Roberts and Stock Car champs Brandon Czarapata (2013) and Damon Murty (2018).

Top four from each feature will square off in a Friday cornhole tourney in the NAPA Fan Zone to determine their respective  starting spots.

MCBIRNIE'S WEEK AT BOONE GETS EVEN BETTER WITH B A & B ALL-STAR WIN

BOONE, Iowa -- Jake McBirnie’s week at Boone Speedway just keeps getting better and better.

The two-car star led 26 of 30 laps, including the last 22 circuits, in winning Thursday night’s B & B Racing Chassis Stock Car All-Star Invitational

“What a deal and what a field of cars,” said a smiling McBirnie, already the winner of a Friesen Performance IMCA Modified feature during the Saturday NAPA Auto Parts Double Down Prelude and of an IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s Stock Car qualifying feature on Wednesday.

“I had a good race there for a while with Shelby (Williams) there for a while,” continued McBirnie, who started the 30-car, 30-lap event from fourth. “He kind of showed me the top and I just figured I’d throw a slider there and try to hold onto it.”

“Shelby is a great racer so I was kind of in defense mode there for a bit.”

McBirnie earned $1,000 along with $650 in lap money courtesy of Elmquist Towing along with a powder coated chassis valued at $7,995 from title sponsor B & B for his efforts.

Luke Lemmens, Kevin Opheim and Williams each enjoyed short turns in the lead before McBirnie moved to the front for good.

The only caution came out at midway and 12th starting Casey Woken took over the runner-up spot following the restart.

There would be plenty of changes in the running order behind the leader over the last half of the race, but Woken, 17th starting Kelly Shryock, Williams and Dallon Murty could not catch up and finished in that order behind McBirnie.

Shryock had won the inaugural invitational in 2021, defending race winner Murty was fifth after starting 27th and 2022 winner Kaden Reynolds was ninth.

Stock Car drivers winning sanctioned events that paid $750 or more since last September were eligible to qualify for the B & B All-Star Invitational, while winners of events paying $5,000 or more received automatic starting spots.

McBirnie became the first driver to make himself eligible for the 2025 B & B All-Star Invitational.

IMCA.TV broadcasts each night of the 42nd annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s.

B & B Racing Chassis All-Star Invitational results – 1. Jake McBirnie, Boone; 2. Casey Woken, Altoona; 3. Kelly Shryock, Fertile; 4. Shelby Williams, Bonham, Texas; 5. Dallon Murty, Chelsea; 6.
