Chris Parkinson “Parks It” at I-35 For First MWRA Win

WINSTON, Mo. — For the first time in his stellar MWRA career, Chris Parkinson, who finished 4th place in points in 2020, 3rd in 2021, and 2nd place the last two seasons with Wholesale Batteries USAC MWRA Sprint Series “Parked It” in first place at I-35 Speedway Saturday night.

Parkinson, who stepped back in 2024 to run a limited schedule with this USAC series drove a nearly perfect race in this one coming from fifth to second place picking off the leaders one by one riding the rim at the Northwest Missouri speed plant.

The (Gladstone, Mo) racer secured the win following a lap 18 restart when he passed leader Zach Clark (Raymore, Mo) going high into the first corner, and then motored to victory over (Independence, Mo) driver Dakota Earls, Clark, Junior Parkinson, (Wichita Falls, Tx), and Tyler Burton, (Independence, Mo) completing the top five respectively.

Earls second place run came after a heat race win, and leading early in the feature. The Missourian then would relinquish the top spot to Clark by lap three, and fall back as far as fourth,  before rebounding in the late going to repass Clark for second, and duplicate his best ever finish in the series.

Third place Clark, like Parkinson, and Earls, was looking for his first win in the series, and  after winning his heat race and earning high point honors was in position to do just that. Clark rolled a two sending him to the second row for the start of the feature, but didn’t remain there long taking the lead from Earls after the first couple laps, and storming to a sizable lead.

That margin was only a car length when Cody Baker rode the highside up to second place, and then caught Clark who was running the bottom. Unfortunately for Baker, he went off the rim going into one, bringing out the yellow, and sending the (Lone Jack, Mo) driver to the tail of the lead lap cars for a restart with seven laps to go.

A couple of attempted restarts, including one where Baker now with brake issues tagged fifth place running Chad Winfrey, resulted in both cars being sidelined. On the next restart, Clark also suffering brake issues was passed by Parkinson on his way to victory. While his father Junior Parkinson, and Burton rounded out the top five with career best finishes with the MWRA after running solidly all evening long.

Finishing sixth place Saturday at I-35 Speedway was Justin Johnson of (Parkville, Mo) who would take the Country Kids Day Care of Olathe Hard Charger award after advancing from tenth to sixth in the twenty five lap feature. With Dusty Murray of (Kansas City, Mo) running seventh, and the veteran Max Grogan of (Basehor, Ks) in eighth. While Winfrey, Baker, Jared McCarty, (Independence, Mo), and Lance Silvers, (Ottumwa, Ia) would complete the field after not finishing the feature respectively.

The Wholesale Batteries USAC MWRA Sprint Car Series is next in action Saturday Night September 28th at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri,  for the seventh annual John Helm Memorial on Championship Night for the MWRA.
