Lee Hibner, Dunwoodie, Kaplan triumph at I-35 Speedway

WINSTON, Mo. — With just six weeks left in the season it was another great night of racing at I-35 Speedway. In the E-Mods, Tony Layne pulled away from Aaron Jones and Brett Holman for his fifth win of the season. The Midwest Lightning Sprints made their return to the speedway where it was the Billings and Billings show, with Mark pulling away for the win and Ken coming home third after JP Falke got around him late.

Pure Stocks come next, where Jason Thurman battled Jakub Hisel before passing him late for the win. Thurman told the crowd he’s old, washed up and shouldn’t have been there, but he put on a heck of a show to beat one of the favorites. In Jr Sport Compacts JR Curtis won his first feature of the night in what would prove to be a long night for his 21JC machine.

Late Models rolled out next, and after Tyler Hibner built a solid lead, lap traffic and a caution for a traffic cone on the track allowed Mark Dotson and Tommy Cordray to close the gap. Hibner went on to win after holding off both late chargers. In USRA B-Mods Adam Dunwoodie whooped the field, opening up an early lead and never letting it go.  Ethan Isaacs, who has won several B Mod races in the handful he’s run here this year, was not able to catch the 33D.

It didn’t last long, but the early laps of the Medieval USRA Stock Cars may have been the best racing all season. Three super-fast cars in Nic Hanes, Austin Kaplan, and last weeks winner Mark Dotson were neck and neck early, until Nic Hanes went over the turn 4 berm and took it behind the wall. Mechanical trouble for Dotson would also end his night, allowing Kaplan to hold off Kristchon Hisel and Chris Dishong for his first feature win of the season.

The great racing wasn’t over yet though, as the USRA Modifieds was an instant classic. Early in the race, trouble for Houston Johnson would bring out the yellow and end his night early. With one of the fastest cars out of the field, it looked like Tyler Hibner would cruise to a 17th feature win. After a few cautions bunched the field, Lee Hibner would try the slide job a few times late, finally making it stick on the last lap and winning his first feature of the year. Finally, the Sport Compacts rolled out, with a scary roll for flagman Jason Teel on the opening lap driving the 21JC of JR Curtis. That would end the night for both Teel and points leader Brad Mick, two of the fastest cars in the field, allowing Ryan Hinkle to pull away for his first feature win of the season.

It was another amazing night of action at I-35, thank you to the drivers, officials, sponsors, and of course the fans for making it all possible. Full results posted
