LAS VEGAS—Chase Elliott will be sidelined from this weekend’s NASCAR competition at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The 27-year-old driver of the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet injured his left leg while snowboarding in Colorado. Elliott is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday evening.

Josh Berry, who currently drives the No. 8 for JR Motorsports, will sub for Elliott in the NASCAR Cup events on Saturday and Sunday.

“Chase’s health is our primary concern,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. "He's spoken with several members of our team and is understandably disappointed to miss time in the car. Of course, he has our full support, and we’ll provide any resources he needs. We hope to share another update later this weekend.”

Hendrick Motorsports has scheduled a press conference for Saturday morning with President and General Manager Jeff Andrews, crew chief Alan Gustafson and Berry.

Berry had two Cup starts with Spire Motorsports in 2021. The 32-year-old from Hendersonville, Tenn., has five NASCAR Xfinity Series wins and qualified fifth for the Alsco 300 on Friday.

Elliott has won NASCAR's Most Popular Driver for five consecutive seasons. He was coming off a second-place finish at Auto Club Speedway. The 2020 NASCAR Cup champion is currently 14th in the standings.
