Schiffelbein Rolls in Heartland Modified Tour Season Opener
HUMBOLDT, Kansas — Friday night kicked off the highly anticipated second season of the USRA Heartland Modified Tour Presented by Real Racing Wheels. 42 drivers from five states were in attendance at Humboldt Speedway. The event honored longtime track owners, the Whitworth family. Many of their former employees were on hand as well.
When the dust settled, Randal Schiffelbein Jr. stood in Victory Lane. An early heat race winner, Schiffelbein redrew the number three pill and jumped to the lead on the opening lap. Once out front he never looked back, winning his second ever HMT event.
“We're a low budget team, so when we win like this, it puts money in the bank,” commented Schiffelbein. “This was our first night, no practice, no nothing. I don't do the old bottom putt-putt and the car was just good enough where I can. I had to slow down, hit may marks and just be consistent.”
Behind Schiffelbein, Shadren Turner finished as the night's runner up driving for the Whitt family. A graduate of B-Mod racing, Turner looked right at home all night. The podium was completed with the Freight Logistics young gun, Wyatt Gaggero, in a strong season opening effort. Brandon Givens was fourth and Dustin Hodges ran fifth.
Early in the night, Wyatt Gaggero set quick time in Deatherage Racing Opticians Time Trials with a fast lap of 15.340. Heat race victories were secured by Chevy Coleman, Randal Schiffelbein Jr., Shadren Turner and Dustin Hodges.
New series flagman and race official Mike Striegel was present with his Outlaw Kids Racing Tours Trailer and took a few young fans through the pit area before the night began. A few more lucky youngsters redrew pills at intermission and one lucky fan took home a custom trophy courtesy of series racer Dean Wille and his company Gator Graphics.
