PLACERVILLE, Calif. — At his self-described “favorite racetrack in the world,” Shane Golobic was proficient yet again at California’s Placerville Speedway.
The Fremont, California racer tracked down racelong leader T.J. Smith near the halfway point of Saturday night’s 25-lap USAC Avanti Windows & Doors Western States Midget feature. From there, the fourth place starting Golobic led the final 12 circuits to take the checkered flag in his Matt Wood Racing machine.
For Golobic, it was his eighth career USAC Western States Midget main event victory, tying him with Tracy Hines, Michael Lewis, Steve Paden, Alex Schutte and Danny Stratton for 27th place all-time. It was also Golobic’s first series triumph since the 2022 season.
Furthermore, Golobic became Placerville’s first three-time USAC Western States Midget winner after previously picking up series victories in 2013 and 2017.
Smith (Fresno, California) led the opening 13 laps of the feature before Golobic took over up front. Smith’s second place result has vaulted him into the series point lead.
The night’s fastest qualifier, Tanner Carrick (Lincoln, California), took third in the feature with Caden Sarale (Fresno, California) fourth and Jett Yantis (Bakersfield, California) rounding out the top-five.
Carrick’s fast lap of 11.810 in time trials bested the field of 24 entries around the 1/4-mile dirt oval. Heat race victories were collected by Sarale, Brody Fuson (Bakersfield, California) and Golobic while the semi-feature win was scored by Yantis.
The event was part of the Nor-Cal Challenge, a co-sanctioned event between USAC’s Western States Midgets, the Bay Cities Racing Association and Western Midget Racing.
