Heartland Modified Tour at Salt City Goes to Mullens

HUTCHINSON, Kansas — The season opener for Salt City Racing at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, proved fruitful for nearby racer Tanner Mullens. Making his first start of the season with the series, he qualified well, won his heat race and redrew the pole for the feature.
Once the initial green flag dropped Mullens set a pace unmatched by the rest of the field to knock down the $2,500 payday. He also sits in a three way tie now with Tyler Wolff and Randal Schiffelbein Jr. as the winningest drivers in the young tour's history, with three.
“I really love coming to this place,” said Mullens in Victory Lane with series announcer Tanner Schmidt. “It means a lot to our family to be here. I can't thank Phil and Lisa and Nic (enough), just everybody that puts effort into saving this place. To see racing here more often, it's something special. I really enjoy coming to support the Heartland Tour. We just tried to pace ourselves pretty good. I was hoping we didn't catch lapped traffic. That was going to be pretty wild.”
Behind Mullens there were a few other notable performances. Paden Phillips was the runner up, marking his best finish of the year with the series. Dean Wille ran third, his best ever finish in HMT action. Brandon Givens finished fourth, keeping his strong start to the season in tact. Chevy Coleman completed top five. He has fought through more mechanical gremlins in a year and half, compared to most of his competitors. It was also his best ever finish with the series.
Reece Solander was the Deatherage Opticians Fast Time winner early on. He clicked off the best time of the night at 22.279 seconds. It was great having Greg Deatherage on hand to congratulate Solander, on track, to kick off the night.
A huge thank you from the series is also in order for Ethyn and Shelby Hafner. They contributed nearly $3,000 additional money to the purse last night. They both competed last night with us too. They own and operate Central Spray Foam and Cement Lifting in central Kansas. Their contribution added $100 to the purse from the back all the way to ninth place. It also bumped the winners money up $500. The show paid $450 just to start!
Brandon Givens jumped to the points lead, by 17 markers over Shadren Turner. Dean Wille sits third. Jason Pursley and Dakota Dale complete the balance of the top five in the championship race.
The USRA Heartland Modified Tour Presented by Real Racing Wheels rolls back to Missouri for it's next pair of shows. Friday, May 9, at Midway Speedway in Lebanon, Missouri is squarely in focus. The next night, Saturday, May10, Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri hosts the tour.
