Tyler Hibner, Daniel Harris, Brad Derry shine at I-35 Speedway

WINSTON, Mo. — Generational Buildings Night at the Races presented thrilling racing events at I-35 Speedway. Winning drivers commended the track's versatility, praising its top, bottom, and middle lanes in their post-race interviews. The racing action featured several classes competing three and occasionally four wide on the track.

The race night began with the Pure Stock class taking to the speedway.  Mich Ross jumped to the early lead from his outside front row starting position. He was quickly pressured by Jakub Hisel and James Silkwood.  On the 12th lap it was Ross crossing the start finish line first followed by Hisel, Silkwood, Kaufman, and Chumbly, to round out the top five.

The Late Models took the track for the second feature of the night. Paul Glendenning and Tommy Cordray initially fought for the lead, but Matt Johnson from Archie, Missouri overtook them by lap 5 and claimed victory. Johnson was followed by Glendenning, Cordray, and King. Johnson also recorded a sub-15-second lap in his heat race.

Stanley Kreisel loves racing his Midwest Lightning Sprint at I-35 Speedway.  Tonight, he created his own challenge while leading, he got his racecar sideways out of turn four and that allowed Tyler Johnson to grab the lead.  Kreisel continued to battle back from his mistake and a late race caution closed the field.  On the restart, Kreisel dove inside Johnson and retook the lead and raced to the finish.  Kreisel praised Johnson in the post-race driver’s interview and looks forward to racing him in the future.

The B Mod feature was a welcome back party.  Daniel Harris, who has been out of racing for a couple of years, used his outside front row starting position and led every lap of the USRA B Mod feature.  Lonnie Hibner started in the outside third row and worked his way to the back bumper of Harris and for several laps applied pressure, but Harris stood his ground and crossed first. Hibner finished second, followed by Corey Meyers, Adam Dunwoodie, and Chris Leathers.

The USRA Stock Cars was a stacked field.  Some of the best stock drivers in the USRA were in attendance.  This race involved lots of close racing, but there were lots of yellow flags.  Brad Derry, from the pole position, led every lap of the race but as he stated in his post-race interview, they were wearing out his rear bumper.  Matthew Lance challenged Derry all race trying in vain to steal the low groove.  Jaylen Wettengel followed Lance to the finish and Mich Ross, doing double duty, finished fourth with his USRA Stock Car.

The USRA Modified feature was 20 laps of green to checkered racing action. Lee Hibner from the outside front row led the first lap.  Soon his son Tyler was on his bumper and the father son race was on.  Houston Johnson joined the mix as the three cars approached lapped traffic.  Johnson was able to pass Lee Hibner for second and could close on Tyler Hibner in the corners, but Hibner had more straightaway speed.  At the checkered it was T. Hibner, H. Johnson, L. Hibner and Shayne Bailey in that order.

Sport Compacts then took the track for their A feature.  Grabbing the early lead was last year’s junior Sport Compact Champion Grant Sheetz.  Brad Mick who started behind the younger driver passed Sheetz on lap 3 but Sheetz never went away staying in Mick’s tracks the entire 10 circuits around the track.  At the end it was Mick, Sheetz, David Miller III, and Samuel Moore rounding out the top 4.

The E Mod feature was Tony Layne starting on the pole and grabbing the lead.  Challenging Layne most of the race was the 08 of Nathan Hampton.  Hampton got into Layne and spun him at the halfway point of the race.  Hampton to the tail, Layne leading.  Hampton restarted in last came flying through the field to put pressure on Layne on the last lap but Layne took the win, Hampton in second.  Derrick Mahoney was third and Nathan Asher was fourth.

The three car Junior Sport Compact race closed out the night with John Lucito claiming his second win.
