Thomas, Homan triumph at Eagle Raceway

EAGLE, Nebr.—It was another cool night at Eagle Raceway as Avid Realty and Empire Fence presented the Opening Night of the 2025 regular season. The large crowd that had been anticipating the start of the regular season and braved the chill saw an astonishing field of 172 cars pack the pits of America’s Home Track. As a post on the Jet Racing Team Page on Facebook put it “172 racecars at Eagle Raceway on a weekly night!!! Boone Who??? Wow is all I can say!!!”.

I think you can definitely say that the fans got their money’s worth and more with 1 E Feature, a D Feature, 4 C and B Features and of course 5 A Mains.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing.

The first A Feature was for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. John Anderson’s 21X lead lap 1 with Chad Andersen’s 8C, the 55X of Tim Drake and Ryan Harris in the 49 rounding out the top 4. Mason Richards got past Harris on lap 2 to put his 18M into fourth place. Andersen passed Anderson for the lead on lap 10 with Richards advancing to third. Shane Stutzman cracked the top 4 with 5 to go in his 22S. The only caution of the race came with just 3 laps left when Jeff Watts’ #66 made contact with the 44X of Cash Beckman, sending Beckman hard into the implement tire guarding the track exit in turn 1. Beckman got restarted but headed straight to the infield while Watts headed  to the pits behind the wrecker. From there to the checkers the top 4 remained unchanged with Andersen, Anderson, Richards and Stutzman headed to the tech inspection area.

This marked Chad’s first ever win in the stock car after many years competing in the modified class. He said “38 cars in the stock car field on a weekly night. I don’t know where they all came from, but I just wanted to do something different. The stock cars are a lot of fun. I feel like they’re more driver prone setup wise. But they’re a handful and a lot of fun. I just need to get better because I keep making mistakes here and there. I’m so aggressive and used to the modified, hitting the corner and hitting the gas but these aren’t like that. I have to keep telling myself to be patient. Hats off to DJ and Jake. All I had to do was tune it back a little bit. We’ve got a lot of adjustments to make but it was a great car right out of the box and I’m really happy with it. I need to thank Logan, Allie, Jace, Andy, Wyatt, Pat, Ben, Bennet, Jake, Kamdyn and Kallie for all that they do for me every week”. Chad’s sponsors include Dinker’s Bar and Grill, Bobcat of Omaha, Big Red Towing, Countryside Contracting LLC, Paddy McGown’s Pub and Grill, Razor Chassis, Logemann Auto Parts and Machine, Five Star Frameworks, Only Pro Decaling, Flatfoot Trucking, Utility Trenching, Continental Battery Systems and Jake and April.

Next up was the A Main for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. Tyler Nerud put the 5T out front on lap 1, followed by the 18M of Mason Richards, the V18W of Cole Wayman, the 31R of James Hines and Derek Hall in the 44D. Mason Richards got past Hines on lap 2 to put the 18M into fourth as Hall advanced to third. There was a big pileup on lap 3 when the 43T of Tyler Remmereid got sideways coming out of turn 4 and dove straight down to the bottom of the track. Matt Andrews’ 22, the 6SJ of Shawn Pospisil and the 7F of Aiden Floyd spun to a halt in turn 4 as a result as Remmereid kept going. A new wrinkle in the restart procedure was put to use for the first time ever as the EastepWheels.com ‘Choose Cone’ was put on the front stretch. Following the lead of the High Limit Sprint Series, NASCAR and many tracks across the country, tracks are using the ‘Choose Cone’ and Eagle Raceway decided to add to the excitement of restarts by using it also. Now, restarts will be double file with each driver choosing to start either inside or outside. So, the lineup on the restart may or may not be the same as the running order at the completion of the previous lap. The restart saw Richard’s pass Hall for third and Adam Vrbka also got past Hall to put the 7V into fourth. Wayman snagged the lead away from Nerud on lap 7 but slowed to a stop the next time around with a flat right front tire. That moved everybody up 1 spot and put the 44D of Hall back into fourth but having chosen the low line on the restart, it allowed Trevor Noonan’s #66 to move up to fourth on the starting grid. Wayman rejoined the field at the rear after changing his flat tire. Richards and Vrbka both used the restart to move up to second and third, respectively. Noonan passed Vrbka for the third spot on lap 7. Nerud bobbled on lap 9, allowing Richards to take over the lead. Richards lengthened his lead and held on to the victory. Nerud was second, Noonan third and Vrbka fourth. As a side note, Wayman managed to run all the way back up to sixth at the finish.

Mason related “Man, after running the Stock Car Feature and then the Sportmod Feature kind of takes the wind out of you. It’s been super exciting, already having 2 wins under my belt this year which is more than I had all last year. I want to say Thank you for my dad Terry Richards, Bobby Brewer, Jerry Zierke, Tatum Arguello and Derek Masek for coming and helping in the pits, This win is dedicated to Jerry Zierke whose father passed away today”. Mason’s sponsors include TR'S Tool Service LLC, NNN Auto Sales & Service, Blackstone Builders, Spanel Engines, Riha LAWN Mechanix, C & L Automotive, Miratsky Farms, Bay Composites Inc., Jet Racing, Dietz Wealth Management , Bobby Brewer, Derek Masek, Jerry and Brenda Zierke, Dave and Laura Rodgers, MJM, Linda Czaplewski, Jeanette Greer, Mitch and Shawn, James Sedam, Grill Starters, Hadley Rohr, Nathan Hirt, Jeanette, Scott Olson and the Abernathy Family.
The top 4 after lap 1 of the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modified Feature were the 27 of Clint Homan, Cameron Thompson’s 2T, the 96J of John Saathoff and Ricky Stephan in the 25. Stephan passed Saathoff for the third spot on lap 6. 2 laps later Shawn Harker also passed Saathoff for third place, lost the spot back to him the next time around but regained it again the following circuit. Lap 10 saw the yellow lights come on in the corners when Cade Richards spun the 1R to a halt at the bottom of turns 1 and 2. Thanks to the ‘Choose Cone’, at that time the top 4 were Homan, Thompson, Stephan and Harker. Thompson spun in turns 1 and 2 on the restart, collecting Bob Zoubek’s 5S, the 81 of Mike Densberger, Chad Anderson’s 8C and the 4B of Brandon Verbeek. The restart top 4 were Homan, Stephan, Harker and Saathoff. Harker got past Stephan for second place that lap. The final change in the top 4 came with 8 to go when Adam Armstrong passed Saathoff for fourth in his #60. The final top 4 were Homan, Harker, Stephan and Armstrong.

Clint stated “I think we broke the motor on the last lap. At least it was lap 20 and not lap 19! It has a horrible vibration in it. I don’t know. We’ll check it out but I think it’s broken”. Clint’s sponsors include Homan’s Auto, Razor Chassis and Auto Zone.

The first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature saw the 22X of Dustin Jackson spin out at the bottom of turns 1 and 2, collecting Brad Schreiner’s 10 and the 2C of Dave Carter. The complete restart saw Dillon Richards put the 24R into first place with the 22T of Tyler Smith, Brint Lemke’s 26L and the 48J of Nick Jensen close behind. Brayden Hurley passed Jensen for fourth in his #38 on lap 3 and advanced to third 2 laps later. Kaylb Brunnsen also got past Lemke on lap 5 to put the 00K into fourth before moving up to third on lap 7. Richards began to encounter lapped traffic with 4 to go and began picking his way through the pack. The caution flag flew with 1 to go when the 21 of Bennett Johnson slowed to a stop at the top of 1 and 2, setting up a green/white/checkered finish. Richards won with Smith second, Brunnsen third and Hurley for fourth.

Dillon has been wreaking havoc on the high banked 1/3 mile that is Eagle Raceway for several years now. This was just his second night in a new car and his second victory this season after having come home first during the Icebreaker Challenge the week before. “I’ll take it after starting fourth. A guy spun out, allowing me to move up a row and start outside the front row. I tried to stay consistent and smooth and stay out front. We’ll take it! I want to thank my Dad, Kaylee and Paisley, Ed, Ben, Bud and Drake enough. Of course, I couldn’t do it without my sponsors. Thanks to Roger for giving us one badass place to race I know we had a lot of rain up here, but the track was nice and racy”. Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, Swift Racing Springs, S & L Trenching, Noonan Industries LLC, Multi Fire Plug Wires, Aero Wheels, Integra Shocks, Backspin Entertainment, Van’s Waterproofing, Toy Scout, Nelson Tree Service, Cat’s Fireworks, Seven2Carts, Epp Farms, Wiring Solutions, Precision Auto Tune Inc., Neapco, In Memory of Jr Craig, In Memory of Tom Miller, Troy Cepak, Jet Racing, Extreme Motorsports, Schafer’s Oil, Schoenfeld Headers, Inline Healing, 4G’s Powder Coating and Freese Farms.

As usual, the finale for the evening was for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. Brandon Bosma was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 in the 23 with the 63 of Jack Thomas, Nate Weiler’s 4W and the 100 of Clint Benson second through fourth. Bosma already started picking off lapped cars on lap 6. Alex Davenport looped the 25A in turn 1 on lap 9 for a caution. Benson took advantage of the restart to move up to third with Lee Goos’s 17X jumping up to fourth. Goos passed Benson the next lap to grab third. Adam Gullion went around Benson on lap 11 to put the 91 into the fourth position. Tyler Hendrickson spun his 14T out at the bottom of turns 1 and 2 the next lap for a caution. Gullion passed Goos for third on lap 14 Thomas took advantage of a bobble by Bosma with 10 circuits remaining to take over the lead. Goos passed Gullion on the final lap to make the top 4 Thomas, Bosma, Goos and Gullion.

This was the 15 year-old’s second victory. His first was last season in his rookie year in an IMCA Racesaver Sprint. I mentioned that fact to him, inquiring if he planned on a lot more this year, to which he related “Yeah. We’re going to try to get some more. This is my second win this year with 6 races down. We’ve got pretty good speed right now and hopefully we can keep it up and win some more races. We want to get to double digit wins this year. We’ll see what we can do. We started third tonight and were running around down by the tires. There was a big feature down in turn 1 but we were missing it. On the first restart I showed Brandon where I was running, so he started running the same line. But on the second restart I was able to get around him and make some speed. Brandon was fast but I was able to get around him and put my car where it needed to be. I want to thank everybody who helps me out during the week; Riley, Devin, my Dad and Mom, my sister and Jacob. I couldn’t do it without them”. Jack’s sponsors include Morgan’s Towing, Diamond Plumbing, Rocket Media, AFD Graffix, Surebuilt Suspension, Speedway Motors, Nathan Benson Motorsports.

Next week is Junior Fan Club Night, presented by Pepsi and Hotsy. All kids 12 and under receive free front gate admission and can take part in the Kids Candy Grab during intermission.

All 5 classes will be in competition, including the A1 Iron Stock Cars, Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods, Nebraska’s Best IMCA Modifieds, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars.
