Thomas repeats at Eagle Raceway
EAGLE, Nebr.—Saturday at America’s Home Track, Eagle Raceway was Junior Fan Club Night, presented by Pepsi and Hotsy. A beautiful spring day saw a good crowd file through the front gates, ready to see some great racing action on the high banks and they were definitely not disappointed. A total of 148 teams showed up and provided some of the best, if not THE best racing thus far this year.
Of those 148 teams there were 38 A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars, all vying for the top prize of $600 to win and $160 to start the A Feature.
At intermission Sam’s Club provided 300 pounds of candy for the younger fans to grab on the front stretch. At one time the line of entrants stretched from turn 4 all the way back to the Eagle’s Nest! The result was, as usual, a clean track and most likely a lot of sugar rushes for the kids.
There was only one serious incident in the preliminary racing, but it was a very scary one!! Coming out of turn 4 James Patterson’s 22TK jumped the left side tires of the 20X of Steven Muhleke. Patterson’s car then turned sideways, his left side tires dug in and sent him pirouhetting in the air and coming to a halt upside down leaned on the wall just before the flag stand. Luckily, James wasn’t badly injured.
The first A Feature was for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprints. Billy Alley was first back to the flag stand on lap one in the #11 with the 4W of Nate Weiler, Alex Davenport in the 25A and the 14G of Gene Ackland rounding out the top 4. Cole Vanderheiden passed Ackland on lap 2 to put the 15V into fourth but lost the spot to Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 on lap 5. Grossenbacher then passed Davenport the following circuit for third. 2 more laps were in the books when Grossenbacher grabbed second place from Vanderheiden and set his sights on Alley. Joey Danley cracked the top 4 on lap 10 moving up to fourth in his #14. The next time around Grossenbacher passed Alley to take over the top spot. Danley got past Vanderheiden on lap 15 to advance to third and moved up to second the next time around. This set up a battle for the top spot between Danley and Grossenbacher. Grossenbacher was battling lapped traffic, allowing Danley to move alongside of him and even move ahead in turns 3 and 4 with 4 laps to go but Tyler Hendrickson spun out at the bottom of turns 1 and 2 and the yellow lights were lit in the corners. That sent the lapped traffic to the rear of the field. With a clear track ahead of him, Grossenbacher pulled away to a 5 car length win at the checkers, followed by Danley Alley and Vanderheiden.
Win #1 on the season put a big smile on Trevor’s face. “Billy was checked out and we started to get into lapped traffic and I started to catch him. I had the same issue that he did because the cars were all bunched up. Joey got beside me that one time, but we had a really good car and I think we would have won even if it stayed green but that caution really helped me. I need to thank Tyler, Scott, Ben, my Dad, Tate and everyone else who helps out. We had a great race car”. I asked him if we’d be seeing him back at Eagle, to which he replied, “Pretty much like last year, hit and miss here and there”.
Trevor’s sponsors include Stop ‘N Shop, Team Jack, Muehling Financial, Stewart Alley Memorial, Ron Fox Motorsports, Buda Concrete, Silver Ridge Construction , Speedway Motors, Gregg Masonry, Fast Farms, Husker Diesel and Cornhusker Heating and Air.
Next up was the finale for the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. Michael Sherwood’s 0, the 22 of Matt Andrews, Joe Feyen’s 25X and the V18W of Cole Wayman led lap 1. Lap 2 saw Andrews snag the lead from Sherwood with Wayman moving up to third past Feyen. Wayman and Feyen both moved up 1 spot for second and third respectively on lap 4. Noah Williams got past Sherwood the next lap to put the 27W into fourth. Rich Flock spun his 88K to a halt at the bottom of turns 1 and 2 on lap 6 for a caution. Wayman used the restart to take over the top spot on the restart with Williams moving up to third. There was a 4 car pileup the following circuit as Zane Woodman’s 73Z, Sherwood , Flock and Tyler Deeke in the 15 came to a halt at the bottom of turn 4. Luke Williams moved to fourth in the #75 thanks to the Choose Cone. Adam Vrbka put his 7V into fourth on the restart. The yellow flag flew again the next circuit when Josh Pfeifer spun the 33J in turn 4. Vrbka advanced to third on the restart. There was just 1 lap left when Sherwood spun out coming out of turn 4, setting up a green/white/checkered finish. Wayman pulled away to a 5 car length lead for the win. Andrews, Vrbka and Williams rounded out the top 4.
Wayman is the defending track champion at Eagle Raceway, winning his first of the 2025 season. “The car was awesome all night! We’ve had some bad luck this year but the car has been phenomenal and the bad luck hasn’t let us show that. I’m glad we finally got one. These guys are great to race with, but super tough to race against. We’ll take this one and try to get better next week. Thanks to my Mom and Dad, my crew and all my family and friends for their support”. Cole’s sponsors include Vermeer High plains, Fox automotive, Hertz Car Rental, Cherney Enterprises, LLC, Zoz Farms, Kings Auto Supply , Slider Chassis and Uribe Refuse.
Chad Andersen’s 8C, the 81 of Mike Densberger, Tyler Harr in the 21 and the 5S of Bob Zoubek were the top 4 after lap 1 of the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modified A Feature. Zoubek passed Harr for third on lap 2 and Densberger snagged the lead the next time around. Shawn Harker put the #40 into fourth the following circuit. There were just 4 laps left when Brandon Verbeek’s 4B and the 99W of Hunter Weber spun to a stop at the bottom of turn 4 for a caution. Harker used the restart to move up to third as Trevor Noonan advanced to fourth in the #66 and then got past Harker for third the next time around. Lapped traffic began to come into play, closing the gaps between the top 4. Noonan passed Andersen for second place the following circuit but lost the spot back to Andersen on the final lap. Your final top 4 were Densberger, Andersen, Armstrong and Harker.
Mike is a former track champion at Eagle, notching his first victory of the 2025 season after a nasty head-on collision last week sent the car to the frame shop to repair the damage. “Starting out front definitely helps after our DNF last week! The frame shop to victory lane in one week is a great way to go. My brother-in-law was out there in the sportmod feature and I had to show him how to get a win out here because he’s struggling. Just kidding, he’s better than me now. We’ve had some bad luck the past couple years, but we keep working at it. The car’s always dialed in and we’re among the top 4 or 5 cars when we can get up there. It’s always fun racing Chad, so it was a great night”. Mike’s sponsors include Gana Trucking & Excavating, Neemann Refuse Inc., McDonald's, The Cutting Corner, Skytop Towers, Jet Racing, Densberger Farms, Kramer Bar & Grill and MKD Motorsports.
Dave Carter’ 2C held the lap 1 lead for the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A followed by the 69 of Kenny Roberts, Dillon Richards third in the 24R and the 10-4 of Robert Salts. Richards passed Roberts for second on lap 2 with Roy Armstrong taking over fourth place in the 6R. Richards moved to the lead on lap 4 with Brad Schreiner also passing Armstrong to put the #10 into fourth. Armstrong jumped all the way up to third on lap 6, moving Roberts back to fourth. Armstrong kept digging his way towards the front and passed Carter for second place with 9 laps left. Schreiner regained the fourth spot with 7 to go. The final change in the top 4 came with just 2 to go when Neil Pella vaulted past both Carter and Schreiner for third. Your final top 4 were Richards, Armstrong, Pella and Carter.
This was Richards’ second victory in a row for the young 2025 season. He is travelling a bit this year, having taken home a third place at Park Jefferson on Friday night. “Eagle is coming back to the way it was 2 or 3 years ago. Man, it’s fun to fly around the top here! I’ve always run good at Eagle and Roger gives us a great track to race on every week, so I have to thank him for that”. Asked about the possibility of a National Championship run this year, he said “We’ll just have to see. We’re just racing now and we’ll see where we are at the end”. Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, Swift Racing Springs, S & L Trenching, Noonan Industries LLC, Multi Fire Plug Wires, Aero Wheels, Integra Shocks, Backspin Entertainment, Van’s Waterproofing, Toy Scout, Nelson Tree Service, Cat’s Fireworks, Seven2Carts, Epp Farms, Wiring Solutions, Precision Auto Tune Inc., Neapco, In Memory of Jr Craig, In Memory of Tom Miller, Troy Cepak, Jet Racing, Extreme Motorsports, Schafer’s Oil, Schoenfeld Headers, Inline Healing, 4G’s Powder Coating and Freese Farms.
The final race of the evening was for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. As exciting as the previous features had been, this one was one for the ages. The first lap saw the 19 of Kyle Vanover out front with Nate Thompon second in the 3T, Mike Lineberry’s 72 third and Mason Richards fourth in the 18M. Reed Payne looped his #12 in turn 3 on lap 2, bringing out the caution. Casey Woken used the restart to jump all of the way up to third in the 1S with Richards moving up to second and Thompson falling back to the fourth spot. Lap 3 saw a 4-car pile-up in turn 3 with Chad Andersen’s 8C, the 55X of Tim Drake, Payne and the 25! of Trevor Baker after Baker got turned sideways and slammed head-on into the wall, causing heavy, heavy damage to his car. Lap 5 saw Tyler Jackson put the 13T into fourth place. Richards grabbed the lead from Vanover on lap 6 but lost it back to him the next time around as Jackson advanced to third. The battle between Vanover and Richards was on!! Vanover high and Richards low, door handle to door handle, they fought for the top spot with Vanover maintaining the lead at the flag stand. Lap 10 saw Richards pull a slide job on Vanover in turns 3 and 4 to take the lead. The fight wasn’t over yet though, as Vanover tried everything that he could to catch and pass Richards with several near dead heats at the flag stand. Richards held Vanover off, winning by a half car length at the checkers. Jackson was third with Woken fourth.
I kidded Mason about having won in the sportmod last week and now in the stock car, asking him what we should expect from him next, maybe a sprint car victory? He stated “If everything works out, and A Mod or maybe a sprint car but it would have to be a non-winged sprint”. He continued by saying “That was a blast!! Me and Kyle made contact a couple of times so hopefully he forgives me for that. That’s probably the funnest race I’ve ever had in a stock car. It’s super exciting racing against Kyle. The only way that you’re going to get better is to race against a guy that’s got millions of laps and tons of wins. He’s definitely the guy you want to race against and win. I want to thank my dad for helping set up the car”. Mason’s sponsors include TR'S Tool Service LLC, NNN Auto Sales & Service, Blackstone Builders, Spanel Engines, Riha LAWN Mechanix, C & L Automotive, Miratsky Farms, Bay Composites Inc., Jet Racing, Dietz Wealth Management , Bobby Brewer, Derek Masek, Jerry and Brenda Zierke, Dave and Laura Rodgers, MJM, Linda Czaplewski, Jeanette Greer, Mitch and Shawn, James Sedam, Grill Starters, Hadley Rohr, Nathan Hirt, Jeanette, Scott Olson and the Abernathy Family.
Next Saturday is Pink Ladies Night, presented by Rotella’s and the Nebraska Lottery. All 5 classes will be in competition. Adult front gate admission is $15, youths 6-12 are just $5 and children 5 and under are free.
Don’t forget about the High Banks Heist May 15th through the 17th, presented by Malvern Bank. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will be in town for a 3-day racing extravaganza that you won’t want to miss.
