Horton, Anderson headline at Eagle Raceway
EAGLE, Nebr.—150 race teams filed through the pit gates on a beautiful sunny Saturday as Rotella’s Italian Bakery and the Nebraska Lottery presented Pink Ladies Night. The fans were greeted by warm temperatures that were tempered by a gentle breeze.
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary racing action that seemed to fly by almost as quickly as the furious competition on the track.
First on the high banked 1/3 mile for their Feature were the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars, and what an action packed race it was. Ryan Gilland took the lead on lap 1 in the 46 followed by Dylan Haney’s 12X, Mike Scheinost’s 51 and the 24Z of Zach Bohlmeyer. Lap 3 saw Cash Beckman putting his #44X into fourth. Scheinost and Beckman both passed Haney on lap 4 when he lost traction coming out of turn 2. Beckman and Kyle Vanover’s #19 both passed Scheinost the next lap for second and third. Dana Deeke brought out the yellow flag on lap 6 when he slowed dramatically out of turns 3 and 4. Scheinost headed to the pits under the caution. At that point, the top 4 were Gilland, Vanover, Beckman and Haney. The restart saw a melee in turns 1 and 2 caused the red flag to be thrown when Beckman looped it, collecting Dan Jackson’s #3, the 22S of Shane Stutzman and Nick Beckman’s 22. Jackson and Beckman both headed pit side. The top 4 now were Gilland, Vanover, Haney and Bohlmeyer. Vanover snagged the lead on the restart but Gilland took the top spot back the following circuit. Brendan Bruce hit the back stretch wall hard the next lap in the 29B for another caution. Bohlmeyer moved up to third on the restart but Haney regained the spot with 8 to go.
Bohlmeyer hit Haney’s rear bumper the next lap, sending Haney spinning in turns 1 and 2. That moved Travis Hatcher’s 13H to third and Shane Stutzman to fourth in the 22S. The restart saw both Vanover and Hatcher pass Gilland when he bobbled coming out of turn 2. Just 3 laps were left when Benji Legg took over fourth place in the 84. Stutzman got past both Legg and Gilland for third the next time around but fell back to fifth on the last lap making the final top 4 Vanover, Hatcher, Legg and Gilland.
“Last week we were just a little bit short but this week it was worth it. The track was very bottom dominant in the feature. We were behind Gilland who ran a heck of a race but then I snookered him on the outside and luckily held on to win”. Kyle’s sponsors include Bigg Johnson Race Cars, Speedway Race Engines, Theron Ahlman with Avid Realty, Green’s Plumbing and Heating, Speedway Shocks, Mel and Ron and Jeannie Sardeson.
Brandon Horton led the first lap of the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car A Feature in the 1B with Bret Klabunde’s 77, Trefer Waller in the 32 and Dan Satriano’s 3T rounding out the top 4. Tige Jensen jumped up to third on lap 2 in the 24 and passed Klabunde for second after another lap. Waller regained third the next circuit with Klabunde fourth. Jason Danley passed Klabunde on lap to put the 4X into fourth. Lap 8 saw Waller pass Jensen for second but Tyler Hendrickson looped the 14T in turns 3 and 4 for a caution. Waller advanced to second on the restart as Billy Alley jumped all the way up to third in the 11, moving Jensen back to fourth. The restart was called back when Jack Thomas started to spin the #63 on the back stretch. Alley and Danly both passed Waller on the restart to move to second and third with Danley taking over second place the next time around. Trevor Grossenbacher moved up to the fourth position the following lap in his #35. With 9 laps to go Ty Ledger’s 35L went up and over in turns 1 and 2 with the 25 of Gunnar Pike getting caught up. Ledger was not seriously injured. Jensen went up and over in turns 3 and 4 with 4 to go as Hendrickson had nowhere to go and slid into him. The top 4 remained unchanged with Horton, Danley, Alley and Grossenbacher your top 4.
This was Brandon said “We had some engine issues 2 weeks ago and didn’t get the new one in for last weekend. We got it put in and came back, starting on the front row which is a huge advantage. I’ve had a lot of laps out here, so I felt pretty confident when I got to start up there. When we started getting all of those restarts things started getting a little concerning because I knew who’s creeping up behind me. When you’re starting double file, it’s a big concern. It worked out well and we had really good restarts and got it done”. Brandon’s sponsors include Top Turf, Edwards Auto Group, Omaha Barbell, Tech Services Group, West Omaha Boat and Jet ski and Old Smokey Barbecue.
The 18 of Dion Kovar, Shawn Pospisil’s 6SJ, the 62 of Bobby Draper and John Allensworth in the 19X were the first 4 back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmod A. Allensworth passed Draper for third on lap 3 and got around Pospisil the next time around to grab second. He wasn’t through charging through the field though, taking over the lead on lap 5. Noah Williams spun to the infield in turns 1 and 2 on lap 10 for a caution. The restart saw Kovar regain the lead as Matt Williams moved to fourth and advanced to third 2 circuits later in the #22 with Draper holding down fourth. Cole Wayman cracked the top 4 with 8 to go in his V18W and passed Andrews for third the following lap. Allensworth held on for the victory with Kovar second, Wayman third and Andrews fourth.
Allensworth’s day began rough, being stranded on the side of the road on the way to Eagle Raceway but definitely ended on a high note He started out racing go karts in 2003, moving up to Pro Ams/Stock Cars in 2010 and then to sportmods in 2011. This was his first Eagle Raceway feature win after starting fourth. He stated “That was probably the most fun I’ve had in a racecar in 20 years!!I saw when Kovar peeked his nose under me and I got a little worried. When those last 2 came down I was shaking in my car, thinking I’m going to mess this up. That choose cone kind of played with my head a little bit. The high side was working for me, but I didn’t want to give up the pole and it worked out in the end”. John’s lone sponsor is Jerry’s Waterproofing. I mentioned to him that maybe this win will attract a few more.
The Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modifieds rolled out next for their main event of the evening. The 94 of Calvin Caha stopped on the front stretch during the initial attempt at a start and the yellow lights were lit in the corners. The first official lap saw the 88 of Sean Barragan out front in the 88, followed by Chad Andersen in the 8C, Tracy Harr’s 21 and the 3T of Nate Thompson. Andersen took over the lead on lap 2 as Thompson moved up to third. Thompson lost the third spot back to Harr on lap 8 but regained it on lap 9. Adam Armstrong put his #60 into fourth place with 7 to go. Sean Manning slammed the implement tire guarding the pit entrance very hard 2 laps later. Armtrong moved up to third on the restart, putting Barragan back into fourth. Armstrong and Barragan both passed Harr for second and third with 3 to go but couldn’t catch Andersen who won by just over 3 seconds. Armstrong, Barragan and Harr rounded out the top 4.
I mentioned that Chad had wins in both the stock car and modified this year already and asked when he was going to get the double, to which he replied “I don’t know! I was trying some stuff with the stock car this week and we were just WAY out in left field. That thing was horrible. Our point average is good, so we’re having to start in the back so I figured that was the time to try an adjustment on it, since it was just our fourth or fifth night in the car. I’m not too familiar with the stock car stuff. I’m learning as I go. I moved the bar and I’m not going to do that again! The mod deal, we were off in the heat race and it wasn’t as good. 2 weeks ago, we were in that wreck, caught the right rear and ripped all of that stuff off and we’re still finding things that are kind of bent, broken or just not how they should be. We’re slowly putting stuff back together. I think we’ve got everything fixed up and now we’re just dialing it in slowly. We’ve put it on plates, load sticks and scales. It takes so much time to win any more; everybody’s so fast and you have to be 100 percent. I’ve got enough laps around here that I can tell when something’s not right. I felt like we were pretty much in control in the mod feature. We were pretty freed up at the beginning of the race but I could feel it going away towards the end. I started slowing my corners up because I figured that if my car was going away then everybody else’s was too. It was a fun track tonight, slicker and it was a driver’s track with a little bit of a cushion”. Chad’s sponsors include Dinker’s Bar and Grill, Bobcat of Omaha, Big Red Towing, Countryside Contracting LLC, Paddy McGown’s Pub and Grill, Razor Chassis, Logeman Auto Parts and Machine, Five Star Frameworks, Only Pro Decaling, Flatfoot Trucking, Utility Trenching, Continental Battery Systems and Jake and April.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were the final race of the night. Tyler Smith spun the 22T out in turns 1 and 2 on the first try at a start, resulting in a complete restart. When a lap was in the books Ben Becher’s B4 led with Brad Schreiner second in the 10, the 2C of Dave Carter third and Colin Hein’s 19H fourth.
Schreiner got past Becher for the lead on lap 2 as Hein moved up to third and the 10-4 of Robert Salts took over fourth. Dillon Richards vaulted all of the way up to second in the 24R the following lap. Becher hit a tire guarding the bottom of the track on lap 4. Hein then contacted Becher when Becher slid up the track in turn 2 and then contacted Carter, sending Carter hard into the back stretch wall and collecting Hein, Neil Pella’s 3N and the 6R of Roy Armstrong. That resulted in a red flag situation. The ensuing lineup saw Schreiner, Richards, Brandon Fisher third in the 25 and the 53T of Trenton Dowty your top 4. Richards and Fisher both passed Schreiner on the restart. Schreiner regained the second spot on lap 8 but Fisher passed him back 2 laps later. Schreiner again got by Fisher with 8 to go. Tyler Ramsey’s 72T spun in turns 3 and 4 2 laps later, refired his engine but started back up facing the wrong way as the leaders approached him and the yellow flag was displayed. Zach Gimpel’s 25Z chose the low side at the choose cone and he and Dowty both passed Schreiner on the restart for second and third, moving Schreiner to fourth. Fisher passed Schreiner on the restart to return to fourth. Schreiner again moved into fourth with 4 laps remaining but Fisher regained the position the next lap. Richards got the victory with Dowty second, Gimpel third and Fisher fourth.
This was Richards’ fourth victory in four competitions at Eagle Raceway so far this season. Maybe we need to come up with a nickname for him. How about Dillon the Dominator??
Richards started 10th in the A Feature. “We’ll take it. The track was perfect again tonight, thanks to Roger. The track was my kind of track. It was slick and I knew everybody was going to struggle. It paid off when the track came right to us, it was perfect”. I asked him what he thought of the EastepWheels.com choose cone, and he said “It’s all right. It gives us a chance to start wherever we want, wherever we think we have a better chance to race at. The first time I got to use it was tonight but it paid off for me”. I mentioned that he usually runs the high side but chose the bottom on restarts. He stated “I had to protect the bottom because the 25 kept trying to pass me there. I knew I could beat Brad around the top; I just had to protect the bottom, pull away a little bit and go back to my usual route”. Dillon’s sponsors include Koozer Painting, Fester’s Bait and Tackle, Swift Racing Springs, S & L Trenching, Noonan Industries LLC, Multi Fire Plug Wires, Aero Wheels, Integra Shocks, Backspin Entertainment, Van’s Waterproofing, Toy Scout, Nelson Tree Service, Cat’s Fireworks, Seven2Carts, Epp Farms, Wiring Solutions, Precision Auto Tune Inc., Neapco, In Memory of Jr Craig, In Memory of Tom Miller, Troy Cepak, Jet Racing, Extreme Motorsports, Schafer’s Oil, Schoenfeld Headers, Inline Healing, 4G’s Powder Coating and Freese Farms.
