Mullens Grabs Hometown Win at 81 Speedway

PARK CITY, Kans.—Tanner Mullens rolled out of the chute as the final car in Deatherage Opticians Time Trials, and proceeded to set quick time. He parlayed that into a heat race win. At the Outlaw Kids Racing Tours Redraw, he selected the number one frisbee and held everybody off to score the win. It came in front of a big crowd at 81 Speedway in Park City, KS.
“We weren't quite as good there as I think we needed to be and struggled to move around there, but we'll take what we can get,” said Mullens in Victory Lane. “We've had a lot of luck go our way and we're just having fun.”
Behind the winner there was all kinds of action and jockeying for position throughout the entire race. Starting eighth, Tyler Davis found the bottom early on and began to pick off positions. He rolled his BOM Chassis smooth and steady along the hub and made it all the way to second by the race's end.
Paden Phillips redrew the outside pole and was up near the front the entire duration. He raced hard with Tad Davis for a big portion of the show, who ran fourth. The top five was completed by Joe Duvall, who dropped in for a rare HMT visit.
The 81 Speedway crew provided a perfect surface throughout the night. It allowed the strong 40 car field the opportunity to to race from the top to the bottom, and everywhere in between, with the money on the line.
Brandon Givens continues to show the way in an incredibly tight points battle. The top ten are separated by only 115 markers. Tad Davis is only 19 spots back of the lead. Wyatt Gaggero continues to hold down third. The VP Rookie of the Year contenders reside in fourth in fifth. Shadren Turner and Bobby Williams are separated by a single point. They are both less than 80 points out of the lead for the overall championship too.
Next weekend, the HMT is back in action, alongside the USRA American Racer Modified Series Presented by Day Motor Sports. It's the series only co-sanctioned events of the entire year. Joe Duvall presents his annual “Dirt Track and Honky-Tonk Extravaganza,” Friday and Saturday. Arrowhead Speedway is first up, followed by Salina Highbanks Speedway.
