Drueke, Saathoff score Memorial Weekend wins at Eagle
EAGLE, Nebr.—Before we talk about the racing at Eagle Raceway Saturday, I want to request a favor from you all. Would you please all contact Mother Nature? Call her, message her, call her or whatever but remind her that it’s the end of May and not the beginning of March.
It was a chilly night Saturday as Celerion and Nebraska Septic presented the Memorial Day Showdown at America’s Home Track. We all know how hardy dirt track fans are and the very big crowd proved that. The only thing bigger than the crowd was the 170 teams that filled the pits. With 1 D Feature, 4 C Features, 4 B Features and 4 A Mains, a total of 34 races , the cost of a front gate adult admission was just 44 cents. What other track offers that much racing for that little money???
There were no major incidents in the preliminary racing action.
The first A Main was for the Nebraska’s Best Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modifieds. Dustin Andersen put the 8A out front on lap 1 with Cameron Thompson second in the 2T, Jaxon Saathoff’s 96 third and the 13J of Jared Deterding rounding out the top 4. Saathoff passed Thompson for second on lap 2 as Brandon Verbeek advanced to fourth in the 4B. Bob Zoubek also passed Verbeek, this time on lap 3, putting the 5S into fourth. Zoubek moved up to third the next lap with Thompson following him into fourth place. Lap 5 saw Zoubek continue his march to the front of the pack, getting around Saathoff for second place. Verbeek moved back into fourth the next time around Lap 9 was in the books when Andersen slowed and Zoubek made contact with him and sending him spinning coming out of turn 4. Zoubek was sent to the rear of the field for the incident. The Eastepwheels.com choose cone was set out on the front stretch and the shuffling made the top 4 Thompson. Saathoff, the 81 of Mike Densberger and Verbeek. The restart was called back when four cars spun to a stop at the top of turns 3 and 4. They were Tracy Harr’s 21, Zoubek, the 05 of Shawn Hein and Deterding. Harr went to the pits behind the wrecker. This time the choose cone put Saathoff in first, Thompson second, Densberger third and Verbeek in fourth. The subsequent restart didn’t fare any better than the previous attempt as again 4 cars came to a halt, this time on the back stretch. Nate Thompson in the 3T, Hunter Weber’s 99W, the 7 of Bob Ruisinger and Andersen. Shawn Harker moved up to fourth on the next restart. 9 laps were left when Verbeek jumped up to third with Harker maintaining the fourth spot. 2 laps later Harker passed Verbeek and then moved up to second with 3 to go. Your final top 4 were Saathoff, Harker, Cameron Thompson and Verbeek.
Next was the feature for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars and began with a light sprinkle of rain. Austin Boucher led the initial circuit in his 5A, followed by Jeremy Down in the 6, the 24Z of Zach Bohlmeyer and Roger Elliot’s 6K. Shane Stutzman passed Elliot the next time around to put the 22S into fourth place. Down got past Boucher on lap 5 to take over the top spot. Travis Patterson put the 17TK into fourth the next lap but lost the position to the 19 of Kyle Vanover the following circuit. 10 laps to go and Vanover passed Bohlmeyer for third and moved up to third the next lap with Stutzman passing Bohlmeyer for fourth. The next time around Stutzman passed Boucher for third as Vanover got past Down for the lead. 6 to go saw Tyler Frye pass Boucher to put the #55 into fourth. 2 laps later Boucher again moved to fourth. Stutzman passed Down for second with 3 to go and took over second place. Frye also got past Down to grab third with just 2 circuits left. Chad Andersen had transferred from the B Feature, started 19th and managed to bring it home in fourth on the final circuit. Your top 4 were Vanover, Stutzman, Down and Andersen.
Your Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprints were the next A Main as the rain had stopped. Dominic White in the 11D, Bret Klabunde’s 77, the 25 of Gunnar Pike and Ty Ledger in the 35L were the first four back to the flag stand on lap 1. Cameron Thompson put the 2T into fourth on lap 2 and moved up to second the next lap past Pike. Lap 4 saw Jack Thomas pull a failed slide job on Klabunde coming out of turn 4, hitting Klabunde’s front axle, making contact with the wall and spinning and then doing a slow rollover on the front stretch. He was not seriously injured but was done for the night. He also collected Klabunde and Pike. Pike was towed to the pits as was Thomas, but Klabunde rejoined the field. At the choose cone the top 4 were the 35 of Trevor Grossenbacher, White, Brandon Horton in the 1B and Thompson. Grossenbacher took advantage of the restart to grab the lead, White was second, Horton held onto third and fourth place went to the #32 of Trefer Waller. The next time around Tyler Drueke passed Waller to put the 12T into fourth after having transferred from the B Feature and starting in 16th Drueke got past Horton for third on lap 10 and advanced to second the next lap. Grossenbacher slowed and pulled into the infield on the back stretch on lap 13 and immediately climbed out of the car due to unknown trouble. That moved everyone up 1 position with Drueke inheriting the lead and moving Joey Danley’s 14 into fourth place. Danley passed Waller for third with 10 to go. The next circuit Ledger looped it on the front stretch with front axle damage to slow the action again. Waller regained the 3rd spot on the restart. Just 8 laps were left when Danley tried an ill fated slide job in turn 4, hitting Waller and sending Waller’s car high in the air above the wall, then doing a series of flips before coming to a rest on all 4 tires. He was not seriously hurt. Danley was sent to the rear of the field, moving the 77X of John Klabunde up to fourth. Stu Snyder, also a B Feature transfer, started 17th and had advanced to 5th before the caution. The top 4 at the time were Drueke, White, Snyder and John Klabunde who started 18th. They held their positions to the checkered flag.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were next on the card. Matt Rotschafer led lap 1 in his 14R with Cody Williams second in the 77, Dillon Richards’ 24R third and fourth going to the Dan Markham’s 6. Heading into turn 1 on lap 2 Markham made contact with the 24R of Dillon Richards and got turned around by the pit entrance with drivers behind him barreling into him. A total of 5 cars were involved including the 24T of Tyler Lambertus, Brendon Stigge in the 69S, Kaylyn Brunssen’s 00K and Brayden Hurley in the 38. On the restart Richards grabbed the lead with Williams second, Neil Pella third in the 3N and Williams fourth.
Lambertus stopped at the bottom of turn 4 on lap 3 for a yellow. Williams dropped out of the race, making the top 4 Richards, Tyler Smith’s 22T, the 55C of Garrit Caswell and Pella. At the choose cone Richards went high and Caswell went low. Pella moved to second on the restart with Caswell falling to third and Rotschafer fourth. Brad Schreiner moved to fourth pass Rotschafer on lap 11 when Rotschafer got loose on the back stretch. Caswell moved back up to second with 10 to go. Schreiner also passed Pella for third with 9 circuits remaining. Schreiner went around Caswell for second the following lap. 6 laps to go saw Rotschafer come to a halt sideways on the back stretch and the red flag was thrown. Schreiner passed Caswell on the restart to take third. Smith managed to catch and pull alongside Richards coming to the flag stand with 4 circuits left but Richards held onto the lead. Smith actually got around Richards on the final lap but Richards got the lead back coming out of turn 4 for the win. Schreiner spun coming out of turn 4 making the final top 4 Richards, Smith, Caswell and Pella.
This week the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods were the feature class and last to run their A Main. $550 to win the A and $150 just to start it was the boosted purse for them. Noah Williams’ 27W led the first circuit, followed by the 7 of Lee Horky, Derek Hall’s 44D and Cole Wayman in the V18W. Hall passed Horky for second on lap 2 but Horky passed him back the next time around. Wayman advanced to third on lap 5. With 10 to go Wayman got past Horky for the second position as Mason Richards put the 18M into fourth. Jacob Swanson’s 31S slowed in turn 3 and stopped in turn 4 with 9 circuits left for a caution. Wayman grabbed the lead on the restart with Adam Vrbka moving up to third in the 7V, moving Horky back to fourth. Dion Kovar’s 18 and the 2A of Theron Ahlman came to a halt in turns 3 and 4 with just 5 to go for another slowing of the action. The rain began in earnest at that point, but the race continued. There were no changes in the top 4 with Wayman holding the field off for the victory, Williams second, Richards third and Vrbka rounding out the top 4.
Some of the winners of the previous features departed early due to the impending rain. By the time I got to my vehicle the mass exodus of haulers from the pits denied me entrance to the remaining victors so no interviews were done.
