CALIFORNIA, Mo.—The roar of engines and the thrill of high-speed action returned to The Home of Sunday Night Thunder as Double X Speedway hosted its third event of the 2025 season. After a slow start to the year with two weather-related cancellations, fans were eager to pack the stands and witness a full night of dirt-track excitement featuring Winged Sprint Cars, Super Stocks, and B Modifieds. Since 1989, Double X has been the destination for Sunday night racing in mid-Missouri, and this week’s card proved once again why the tradition lives on strong.
With some new drivers on hand and the announcement of a Points series for the B Modifieds, started by TC Property Investments, Tyler Crocker owner, to go along with the Super Stock and Sprint Car Points, the crowd was excited to witness the action on the track. Super Stock Heat number one saw the driver starting the season off strong, Darin Porter, leading the field to the green flag. Porter took the lead on the start as Wiss quickly moved into second with Keeran, Dowell and Shane following along. On lap 6 Wiss would pass Porter on the low side exiting turn two and hold off Porter by a car length at the checkered. Following Wiss and Porter were Harlan Dowell in third, Eddie Keeran in fourth and John Shane in fifth. Heat race number two saw the return of James Nighswonger to Double X. Nighswonger moved out in the lead early with Dale Berry, Jody Romig, Ryan Shikles and Dusty See trailing. Nighswonger would pick up the win in a convincing fashion, leading green to checker in the #44. Romig would slip by Berry to claim the second position, Berry would cross in third, Shikles was fourth and Dusty See completed the running order.
B Modified heat races were on tap next. Heat one saw Colson Kirk move out on Adam Hall and Chad Staus. The running order would remain unchanged over the duration. Kirk would claim the win over Hall in second, Staus in third, Richard Brainard held off a charging Waylon Dimmitt for fourth, Dimmitt was fifth and Don Williams finished sixth. Heat two had some new faces at Double X for 2025. Tyler Potter made his first outing at Double X in 2025 and was rewarded with a heat race victory. Ryan Eddy ran a strong second in his first visit to the track with Chris Spalding placing third. Casey Thomas crossed the line in fourth and Rylan Gibbs completed the running order.
The long standing premiere division at Double X Speedway, the 360 Winged Sprint Cars as always, finished off the opening portion of the evenings card of events with two qualifying heat races. Heat one was brought to the green by Samuel Wagner and Randy Martin. Martin would win the battle into turn one to the top spot leaving Wagner to battle with Tyler Blank and Blake Bowers. Martin would open up a ten car length lead over Tyler Blank by the white flag and would cruise to the win. Blank would finish second in his new car with the bright pink wing, Blake Bowers finished a strong third, Samuel Wagner crossed the line in fourth and Garrett Benson would finish fifth. Heat two had Kearney, MO driver Darryn Langford on the pole beside Taylor Walton of Odessa, MO. Taylor Walton wasted no time putting his #93 to the point with Langford settling into second followed by back row starter Ben Brown. Brown was able to pass for second on lap six and Miles Paulus moved into third. Walton would take the win with Paulus edging Brown at the line for second, Brown finished third, Jack Wagner was fourth, Darryn Langford finished fifth and Tom Curran sixth.
Feature events saw the Super Stocks leading off with James Nighswonger intent on taking a victory back to the Land of Oz. He beat Darek Wiss into turn one and never looked back. With the #44 on cruise control at the front, Darek Wiss and Darin Porter were battling for the second position, while Jody Romig and Dale Berry were waging battle for the number four spot. At the end of the fifteen lap main event, Nighswonger picked up the victory on his first trip to Double X in 2025. Wiss would prevail for the second position with Porter crossing the line in third, Jody Romig placed fourth and Dale Berry was fifth. Also running at the finish were Ryan Shikles in sixth, Eddie Keeran in seventh, John Shane in eighth and Dusty See in ninth. Harlan Dowell and Steve Beach were unable to start the feature event.
The B Modified feature, led to the green by Colson Kirk and Tyler Potter, was barely started when Richard Brainard and Waylon Dimmitt got together on the backstretch with Brainard’s 3B getting the front bumper wedged into the guardrail. On the restart Tyler Potter was able to edge ahead of Kirk down the back straightaway and move to the point. The racing was close back in the field with Adam Hall, Chad Staus, Casey Thomas and Chris Spalding running hard, nose to tail for the 3 thorough 6 positions. With the track staying heavy throughout the event, the running order remained largely unchanged for the duration, with Casey Thomas moving into fourth place on lap fourteen. A caution in lap nineteen brought out the caution necessitating a green, white, checker situation. Tyler Potter was not to be denied though in claiming the win. Colson Kirk finished second, Adam Hall third, Casey Thomas provided the excitement trying the cushion in turns one and two to pass Hall but settled for fourth at the checker and Chad Staus completed the top five. Winner Potter was also surprised with a two hundred cash bonus in victory lane donated by an anonymous race fan.
The much anticipated 360 Winged Sprint Car feature event had the fans buzzing with excitement as veteran California, MO driver Randy Martin was starting on the pole alongside Taylor Walton. Martin won the battle through turn one and opened a five car length lead over second. Tyler Blank moved into second by lap five and set his sights on the red #14 of Martin. A lap seven caution for Blake Bowers would set the field single file behind Martin and Blank. On the restart, Martin would use the cushion to maintain his momentum while Blank had to deal with a hard charging Mile Paulus. Blank would go to the low groove gaining on the leader with Paulus running the top shelf in third. Jack Wagner was also advancing through the field running fourth by the halfway point. Blank would continue to challenge the leader on the bottom with the veteran Martin continuing on the top shelf. The lead duo battled for the duration as fans were treated to a classic match of the professor and his pupil as Blank grew up watching Martin make laps around Double X. At the checkered it was a popular win for Martin Racing as the crowd cheered him in victory lane. Second place finisher Blank stopped on the front straightaway to offer congratulations to Randy and crew. Miles Paulus finished a very strong third with Samuel Wagner slipping into fourth at the checkered over brother Jack Wagner in fifth.
With the final checkered flag dropping at 9:35PM fans had a quick, quality night of dirt track racing.
