CALIFORNIA, Mo.—After a rainout sidelined the action last week, Double X Speedway roared back to life on Sunday night with a special Father’s Day edition of Sunday Night Thunder. A strong crowd filled the stands as many new cars and drivers joined the field, adding fresh excitement to the racing card. The pit area was buzzing with anticipation as Winged Sprint Cars, Super Stocks, and B Modifieds delivered a night of fast-paced action under cloudy but dry skies.
With sixteen Super Stocks on hand, several drivers were making their first appearance at Double X for 2025. Heat one saw Darek Wiss driving his own ride at Double X for the first time this season. It took three tries to get underway but Wiss was able to move out to the point and lead unchallenged for the eight lap heat. Derek Brown advanced to second, Steve Beach was third and Dean Willie was fourth. The second heat was full of talent also. Darin Porter took the early lead but spun out in turn two handing the point to James Nighswonger. On the restart Nighswonger was able to open up a four car length lead over the field. At the checkered flag it was Nighswonger, Dale Berry, eighth starting Ted Welschmeyer and Jody Romig in the top four.
B Modified heats were next with Terry Schultz taking the win in heat number one. Adam Hall would chase the #90 to the line and finish second, Cole Campbell was third and Colson Kirk finished in the fourth spot. Heat two saw Waylon Dimmitt move to the point and run the low groove to victory. Tyler potter would press the leader but settle for second, Jeremy Lile dug his way to third on the bottom and Jake Fetterman would finish fourth.
The 360 Winged Sprint Cars took to the track to complete the action of the first half of the night. Heat one saw Josh Fisher take the early lead before a nose wing mount broke, changing the handling enough to allow hard charging Garrett Benson to capitalize and take the victory. Fisher would hold on for second with Tom Curran third and Blake Bowers fourth. Heat two had Jack Wagner moving to the lead in the opening laps and stepping out over the field. Broc Elliott held off the challenges of Ben Brown to take second, Brown would finish third with Taylor Walton crossing in fourth.
The second half of the evening kicked off with the Super Stock Feature event. Darek Wiss and James Nighswonger brought the field to the green. Wiss would move to the point early over the #44 of Nighswonger. Derek Brown would take second on lap three and start trying to reel in the leader, Wiss. The top five cars of Wiss, Brown, Nighswonger, Ted Welschmeyer and Dean Willie would distance themselves from the rest of the field and race among themselves. A caution with three laps to go bunched the field up behind the leader. Wiss was leading on the restart with Brown right on his bumper. As the white flag flew Brown moved out to the top shelf and pulled alongside the leader down the back stretch, side by side into turn three with Brown inching ahead coming out of turn four. Wiss tried all he could to slow Brown but at the checkered flag Brown held a ½ car length advantage. Following Brown and Wiss across the line were Nighswonger in third, Welschmeyer in fourth and Willie in fifth. Sixth through tenth crossed in this order, Eddie Keeran sixth, Dale Berry seventh, Steve Beach eighth, Darin Porter ninth and Jody Romig tenth.
The B Modified feature rolled off next with Terry Schultz and Waylon Dimmitt bringing them to the green flag. Schultz would take the lead with Adam Hall quickly moving into the second position. A caution after lap five bunched the field again behind the leader. On the restart Schultz seemed content to run the low groove as the field settled into the same. Cole Campbell running fourth at the time began to advance by venturing to the cushion to overtake the cars in front. On lap fourteen he again moved to the top shelf and passed Schultz in turn three to take the point. For the remainder of the event, it was Campbell’s race to lose and he claimed the victory after twenty laps. Schultz would complete the event in second, Adam Hall finished third, Tyler Potter fourth and Colson Kirk completed the top five.
The 360 Winged Sprint Car feature saw Jack Wagner put the #77 JHR machine to the point on the opening ap and was not headed the duration of the event. With the advantage of a mostly clear track ahead he was able to consistently hit his marks to maintain a comfortable advantage over the field. Ben Brown looked strong early before a flat tire relegated him to make a change in the pits and rejoin the field at the rear. Broc Elliott ran second early before fading to fourth in the running order. The hard chargers of the race were Tyler Blank and Samuel Wagner. Blank moved in to the second position just past midway and Samuel Wagner followed into third. In the closing laps Wagner was able to move by the #75 machine to take the second spot. At the checkered it was Wagner Boys Racing finishing one-two with Jack in the top spot and Samuel in second, Tyler Blank finished third, Broc Elliott fourth and Garrett Benson was fifth.
