Davenport and Murty Produce First Career Huset’s Speedway Victories During Night 3 of Silver Dollar Nationals

BRANDON, S.D.—Jonathan Davenport and Dallon Murty scored Silver Dollar Nationals presented by MyRacePass feature triumphs on Friday during the third round of the four-day marquee event hosted by Huset’s Speedway.
It marked the first time both drivers have won a main event at the high-banked oval.
Davenport darted to the lead from the third starting position by using the bottom groove. He mostly held that lane throughout the distance of the 40-lap Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series main event en route to his sixth triumph of the season with the Series – tied for second most.
“I didn’t really know where to go,” he said. “I was really trying to block there. We were just good enough to hang on. We just ran pretty much 38 laps down there before I started moving around and I didn’t really move up there. I knew I was going to try to make it as wide as I could.”
The race was stopped only once for a caution on Lap 35. Devin Moran, who won the preliminary night on Thursday, ran second until dropping two spots on the restart. Ricky Thornton Jr. moved into the runner-up position and Brandon Sheppard advanced to third during the restart with Sheppard getting by Thornton Jr. on the ensuing lap.
Sheppard pounded the outside lane and was within a couple of car lengths of the leader throughout the final handful of laps before finishing second by 0.194 seconds.
“Forcing me to the outside made me pack the top in,” he said of what he did during the caution laps. “When we went green, at that point you don’t have anything to lose. I held it to the mat for six laps and we came up just a little bit short.”
Thornton Jr. placed third for his second straight night on the podium. Moran finished fourth and Hudson O’Neal was fifth.
Sheppard and Garrett Alberson were quickest in their qualifying groups to start the program before Moran, Davenport, Alberson and Thornton Jr. won the heat races. Donald McIntosh was the B Main winner.
Murty charged from the sixth starting position, used a late-race pass and survived a slide job attempt on the final scheduled lap to capture the $6,053-to-win Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing Series A Main.
Bill Leighton paced the field for the first 25 laps before Murty completed the race-winning pass. Leighton dropped back several car lengths, but he closed coming to the white flag and pulled even as the duo entered turn one. With Murty banging against the cushion, Leighton slid up the track in turns one and two. Apparent contact resulted in Leighton spinning out to bring out the lone caution of the race.
Murty then held off Jesse Sobbing by 0.617 seconds during a green-white-checkered restart.
“As far as I’m concerned he put a spoiler in my window net and I didn’t lift,” Murty said of the late-race contact. “Man, that was awesome. I think I hit every berm, every wall. Every panel is crinkled up. What a night. We had a hot rod.”
Kyle Berck recorded a third-place result with Tad Pospisil ending fourth and Corey Zeitner fifth.
The Silver Dollar Nationals presented by MyRacePass concludes on Saturday during Kwik Star Night, which features a $75,000-to-win Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series main event. The Nordstrom’s Automotive Late Model Street Stocks will also be part of the racing program. The gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 p.m.
