Mullens wires the field as 16th annual USMTS Show-Me Shootout opens at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, MO.—Tanner Mullens bounded to the front on the opening lap and went on to lead all 40 circuits to capture Friday night's opener of the 16th annual USMTS Slick Mist Show-Me Shootout Presented by Foley Equipment.
Mullens, of Wichita, Kan., outdistanced Tyler Wolff to earn the $5,000 prize at Lucas Oil Speedway. The United States Modified Touring Series will go again on Saturday night in another 40-lapper for another $5,000 to win.
Other feature winners on Friday night were JC Morton (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods), Tyler Wolff (Hermitage Lumber Late Models) and Jason Hughes (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods).
From the inside of row two, Mullens grabbed the lead shortly after the green, getting around pole-starter Nic Bidinger. He navigated two brief cautions and a bout with lapped traffic to score his third USMTS victory of the season and 16th overall win.
"I was fading there at the end," Mullens said of his 1.5-second win over Wolff. "The lappers were right the the bottom and the middle was getting really, really dirty. I would stay out there for a few laps and if I wasn't going to make it, I had to go back to the bottom.
"I'd seen Tyler (Davis) was getting close there. He's really good here and I knew it would be tough, but I held on until the end. It was a pretty good evening."
Mullens had a 1.4-second lead by lap five but the big early news was Davis, advancing to third from eighth. Ninth-starting Wolff, a few minutes after winning the Late Model feature, found himself in fifth after eight laps. That’s when the first caution flew for a spin in turn two. Davis took second away from Kyle Brown on the restart as Mullens pulled away.
Brown spun on lap 12 to bring out the second and final caution. Mullens got it rolling again after the restart and established a 1.5-second lead over Davis by the halfway mark.
Showing his strength on longer green-flag runs, Mullens’ lead peaked at 2.4 seconds by lap 24. But as he encountered lapped traffic soon after, Davis began to slice into the margin and the gap was under one second by lap 29. Then as Mullens got around a pack of slower cars and Davis was held up, he had breathing room again.
Mullens was flawless from there as the race remained green. He won by 1.5 seconds over Wolff, who passed Davis for second with one to go.
"It feels good. We've ran good here in the past," Mullens said. "It's just kind of hit or miss. Here lately we've been a little bit better. I just can't thank everybody enough who's on the car."
Wolff said his only hope was to stay close and hope for a late-race caution.
"I was just trying to be patient," Wolff said. "We were close. We were just off a little bit, but overall a good night for us. Getting to run a Late Model and Mod back-to-back is fun."
Tenth-starting Bobby Williams of Hermitage finished fourth and Bidinger was fifth.
USMTS championship leader Rodney Sanders salvaged 10th after starting 17th. He finished one spot behind defending series champion Jim Chisholm, who started 13th.
USRA B-Mods win to Morton: JC Morton of Springfield earned his second Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod win of the season, passing race-long leader Colson Kirk with five laps remaining.
Front-row starters Kirk and Logan Smith ran 1-2 in the early going with Andy Bryant and Morton joining the battle. Those four were bunched within one second by lap six and Morton advanced to second two laps later.
Finding speed on the bottom, the fifth-starting Morton closed in on Kirk by lap 10 and was .408 seconds behind when caution appeared on lap 11. Morton hopped
to the high side on the restart and started to reel in the leader, finally going around Kirk on lap 15 as he switched back to the bottom.
Morton took it home from there, beating Kirk by 1.5 seconds.
"We took off there and the top five cars were really all about the same speed," Morton said. "We were just kind of maintaining, trying to pull off a move here or there. Then we got to the leader and I about showed 'em the top over here and I think that might have about ended it. We got back going green and I chose the top and got behind and it ended up all right."
Smith held onto third with Jon Sheets fourth and Waylon Dimmitt coming from 12th to fifth.
Wolff scores Late Model triumph: USMTS regular Tyler Wolff of Fayetteville, Ark., scored his second Hermitage Lumber Late Model win at Lucas Oil Speedway, leading all 20 laps of the main event.
Wolff said he's enjoying running the Late Model when he can, using one of his Modified motors to supply the power.
"It's been a great time getting to run it here," Wolff said. "I appreciate the track running these things. It fits the motors we have and makes it a lot of fun. It gives us a chance to do double duty."
Wolff started up front and set the clear pace from the start, building a 2.5-second lead over Robbe Ewing by lap 11 when the race’s first caution came out. The
caution didn’t affect Wolff as he quickly rebuilt the lead in excess of two seconds by lap 15.
Wolff went on to prevail by 3.3 seconds over Ewing, the season points leader at the track. Tucker Cox finished third with JC Morton fourth and Bryon Allison fifth.
Hughes earns USRA Stock Cars win: Four-time USMTS Modified champion Jason Hughes, of Watts, Okla., came to Lucas Oil Speedway in another division. Hughes took the lead on lap four and drove away for the O’Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature victory. It was his second in a Stock Car in two attempts this season.
"These Stock Cars put on a hell of a race," Hughes said. "It reminds me of the old days in the Modifieds when we had no traction, no side-bite and you're just out there sliding around. You just have to keep it all underneath you and that's a lot of fun."
Fourth-starting Hughes took the lead from William Garner on a lap-four restart after Garner paced things to that point. Garner faded out of contention a lap later when his car lost power, but did fire back up to remain on the lead lap.
Meanwhile, Hughes led Mason Beck in a two-car breakaway with Rodney Schweizer nearly three seconds behind in third. Hughes edged away to a 1.2-second
lead over Beck by lap 12.
Hughes went on to win by 1.7 seconds over Beck with Schweizer third, Christopher Sawyer fourth and Johnny Coats fifth.
