Milan, Smith and Wagner earn Sprint Car wins at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, MO.—The 14th annual Impact Signs, Awnings & Wraps Open Wheel Showdown was particularly memorable for Scotty Milan.

The 22-year-old from Fort Collins, Colo., earned his first career POWRi 410 Winged Sprint feature win Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway, taking command midway through the 30-lap feature.

Also posting feature wins Wesley Smith (POWRi WAR/MWRA Wholesale Batteries Challenge Series and Jack Wagner (POWRi 305 Winged Sprints).

Milan, who said he had found tough luck all season after joining the series, grabbed the lead on lap 16 away from Xavier Doney after Doney had led the first 15 circuits.

Milan, who had started 13th, gradually sliced his way through the field before catching and passing the leader on lap 16. He went on to beatSean Rayhill by just over two seconds in the 30-lap main event.

“I finally won,” Milan said excitedly in victory lane. “All year has been kind of rough. We have good runs and then instant bad luck. I’m just excited to win and coming from 13th it wasn’t easy. We had the car on a rain. I was like ‘holy crap, I’m moving.’ First POWRi Sprint Car win, pretty sweet.”

Doney led in the early going after starting from the pole, but Sean Rayhall was giving him pressure just a half-second behind seven laps in. One lap later, the first caution flew with Doney holding a .856-second lead.

Rayhall lost second on lap 10 as Miller slid around him as Doney led by just under one second. Doney’s lead was a half-second at the halfway mark on lap 15 and one lap later, Milan used the low groove to get past Doney and take the lead.

Milan wasted no time building a 1.1-second lead by lap 20 over Miller as Doney slipped to third. Miller pulled even with Milan on lap 23, but was unable to complete the pass as Milan fought back and pushed his lead to a second with five laps to go.

Caution flew on lap 25 for a spin in turn two, setting up a five-lap shootout as Milan led Doney and Miller. Milan was up to the challenge, drawing away late to take the win by two seconds over Rayhall.

“I know we’re new here, but this 14 team, we have a lot of grit,” Rayhall said of his team. “I’m just grateful to be here.”

Doney was third with Clinton Boyles fourth and Miller fifth.

Smith captures WAR/MWRA Sprints feature: Wesley Smith of Nixa led all the way and pulled away late to claim the POWRi WAR/MWRA Sprint feature, beating Wyatt Burks for the victory.

"The competition level around here, I hope the fans can understand that it's top-notch," Smith said.

The pole-starting Smith grabbed the lead at the start and was in front by 1.5 seconds ahead of Dakota Earls when caution appeared on lap two. After the restart, fifth-starting Anthony Nicholson took over second as Smith continued to lead, opening a 2.8-second gap by lap eight.

Another caution, this time on lap nine, erased a three-second command for the leader over Burks, who started sixth. Those two dueled it out after the restart, but Smith started to reclaim some breathing room by lap 13 of the 25-lapper and his lead was two second with five to go.

Smith kept pulled away from there and beat Burks by 3.1 seconds at the finish. Jack Wagner wound up third with Samuel Wagner fourth and Nicholson was fifth.

"Coming here to Lucas, I'm glad I could make it look that way," Smith said of the decisive triumph. "Especially with the big USAC show and the Jesse Hockett-Daniel McMillin Memorial coming up. This place is a tough joint to get around. It's hard on tires and hard on engines, but that makes it all the more fun when you can win."

Wagner wins POWRi 305 Winged Sprints: It was all Jack Wagner in the finale of the program as he lead all but two laps in the POWRi 305 Winged Sprint feature.

Wagner, of Lone Jack, Mo. started on the pole and drove away to a two-second advantage over Danny Smith by lap 10, the halfway mark of the race. But the race took on a new complexion at that point when the first caution flew, taking away Wagner’s big lead.

The field ran just one lap before another caution. It was a battle after the restart, as Danny Smith used momentum for a pass off turn four to take the lead on lap 14. Wagner didn’t give way, though, reclaiming the top spot on lap 16 coming off turn two.

Wagner held on from there and be ninth-starting Landon Muehlberger to score the win by a 1.9-second margin.

"I about lost it there to Danny Smith," Wagner said. "I knew better than to try and get this thing wound up for sound. It's roll around the bottom. It is technical. You have to make sure this car is pedaled in and out and don't slip the tire. I just didn't know you have to be that slow about it."

Jake Martens was third with Smith fourth and Levi Hinck fifth.

Classes in action will be the Hermitage Lumber Late Models, Arctic Food Equipment Modifieds, O'Reilly Auto Parts Stock Cars, Hickamo Super Stocks and the Clear Creek Golf Car B-Mods.

Pits and spetator gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05.
