Houston Johnson posts another double at I-35
WINSTON, Mo.—It was a hot one this past Saturday night at I-35 Speedway, but 99 total cars and a grandstands full of fans still made it a great night of racing. Tonight was Atlantic Bottling: Coca-Cola night at the races, and they handed out lots of great prizes for young race fans. Since we had to cancel due to weather last weekend, tonight was also Back to School night at the races. The kids at the track received backpacks full of school supplies, curtesy of some of our amazing sponsors and people around I-35 Speedway. We also held a meet and greet autograph session with drivers from every class during intermission.
On track, the E-Modifieds started our feature racing and had Tony Layne collecting his 8th feature win of the season. Garrett Stonum finished in 2nd, Aaron Jones in 3rd, Kenny Reed in 4th and Hank Penland scored a top 5 finish.
Next up for feature racing action was the Late Models, which had Houston Johnson making a pass for the lead in the opening laps and never looking back, Johnson’s 2nd Late Model feature win this season. Tommy Cordray showed speed all night and would finish in 2nd, and Michael King finished in 3rd.
Sport Compact feature race brought excitement, as Ryan Hinkle made a pass for the lead in the closing laps to secure the feature win, Hinkle’s 2nd feature win of the season. Harold Robb Jr. led lots of laps but ultimately would come home in 2nd. JR Curtis finished in 3rd, Joshua Robb in 4th and Samuel Moore finished in 5th.
Pure Stocks would follow that up with a high-action race of their own. James Silkwood started in 8th before driving up through the field and challenging race leader AJ Sayers. Silkwood and Sayers would swap the lead for multiple laps. Silkwood would hold on and win his 3rd feature race this season. Isaac Dixon had a strong night and would finish in 2nd, Jakub Hisel finished in 3rd, Cameron Seager in 4th and Gavin Grier rounded out the top-5.
We welcomed back the Vintage Open series to I-35 Speedway, and Mike Lefholz would collect the feature race win. Ron Lefholz ran in 2nd, Dino Rodish in 3rd, Bill Hager 4th and Mike Lawless in 5th.
On track next for feature racing action was the USRA B-Modifieds. Londen McClure would snag his first ever feature win in the USRA B-Mods. McClure was also part of our Back to School night, as Londen and his mom passed out lots of school supplies to the kids during intermission. John Ross would finish in 2nd, Jeff Stots in 3rd, Chase Moulton 4th and Brett Holman in 5th.
USRA Stock Cars had Doug Keller finding Victory Lane for the 2nd time this season, Keller’s first feature win at I-35 since April 12th. Justin Custer was strong all night and finished in 2nd, Chris Mercer in 3rd, Jeff Dixon 4th and Kristchon Hisel in 5th.
Houston Johnson pulled away in the USRA Modified feature race, doubling down on the night once again and collecting feature win number 11 in the Modifieds. Brad Johnson ran in 2nd, Mark Dotson in 3rd, Tim Eaton 4th and Jimmy Dowell in 5th.
And our final feature on the night, Robert Miller tallied his 4th feature win in the Jr. Sport Compacts this season. Rylie Robb ran in 2nd, Abby Lee in 3rd, Leah Whitt 4th and Hallie Waters in 5th.
Thank you to all the amazing race fans that came out for a hot summer night for racing this past Saturday night and keeping the energy going all night long. Thank you to all our track officials and safety crew members for keeping everyone safe and providing an exciting night of racing. And one more big thanks to all the drivers and their crew members for bringing fast cars across all classes and your best to the track every Saturday night. And a last special thank you to everyone involved with our Back to School night at the races.
