Nothdurft Dominates for First Malvern Bank Win in Labor Day Dual Finale

SPRING VALLEY, Minn.—A brand-new face pulled into victory lane with the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing Series Saturday as Blair Nothdurft scored big on the final night of the Labor Day Dual weekend at Deer Creek Speedway.

The last race of a busy month of August for the Malvern Bank Series saw both East and West Series tours return to Spring Valley, Minnesota’s Deer Creek Speedway for the second and final night of the Dirt Track Bank Labor Day Dual weekend. A stout field of 36 cars packed the pit area for the sixth round of the Dirt Track Bank Elite 8 Series and the 10th and final race in August.

Blair Nothdurft started his night setting the fastest lap in Keyser Manufacturing Qualifying. The lone driver from South Dakota clocked in at 14.131 seconds to best the field in group 2. The first group’s fastest driver was West Series Point Leader Jesse Sobbing when he stopped the timer at 14.197 seconds. Group 3 was topped by hometown runner Jake Timm as the Winona, Minnesota timed in at 14.179 seconds. Finally, Chad Simpson, who was third in the East Series Points, was fastest in the fourth and final group with a 14.371 second lap time.

Saturday’s four heat races on the night were won by Jordan Yaggy, Tad Pospisil, J.T. Wasmund, and Lance Hofer. When heat races concluded, Jesse Sobbing was the top driver in points giving him first chance at the $1,000 Skyline Materials Lucky 6th Place Starter bonus. Sobbing declined the challenge giving the honor to the East Series Point Leader, Dylan Thornton.

Dallon Murty and Dustin Sorensen came back and won the two Predator Custom Trailers B Features on the night while Joe Chisholm and Jason Hahne also transferred to the big show. After six provisionals were decided, 26 cars took to the speedway for the 40-lap, $7,000 to win Malvern Bank Main Event.

Chad Simpson brought the field to the green flag from pole, but it was Blair Nothdurft, who started on the outside of the front row, who took the race lead. Nothdurft started in the exact same spot the night before and ended up finishing fourth. This time, Nothdurft would not miss.

Nothdurft saw a challenge early from Simpson and Jake Timm, but as the laps clicked off the scoreboard, and lapped traffic came into play, Nothdurft navigated through the slower traffic with quick and precise moves.

Near the closing laps, Bill Leighton Jr. and Jesse Sobbing went to battle for the fifth spot. Leighton was trying to cut into Sobbing’s point lead, but Sobbing stood strong and fended off the reigning West Series champion.

After 40 laps of non-stop action, Blair Nothdurft led the entire distance, and scored his first-ever Malvern Bank Series victory, a feat that was made even more impressive by the fact he won by over 9.5 seconds, which wis about half a lap on the Deer Creek Speedway.

Nothdurft also made history becoming the first South Dakota born driver to win a Malvern Bank Series feature, and he became the 52nd different winner all-time with the series. Chad Simpson would take second bouncing back nicely after a DNF on night one at Deer Creek while Jake Timm finished third. The East and West Points Leaders, Thornton and Sobbing, rounded out the top five. Dustin Sorensen also picked up a $500 hard-charger award on the night after he came from 18th to finish 6th.

A busy month of August with 10 races in 4 states comes to a close for the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing Series. Both tours are now off for three weeks before returning to action for the seventh round of the Dirt Track Bank Elite 8 Series. The tour hits up the famed Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa for the Maaschman Memorial on September 20th. Following that will be a West Series doubleheader on September 26th-27th with visits to Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas and U.S. 36 Raceway in Osborn, Missouri. The 2025 season will then finish up on October 4th with the 3rd annual Pumpkin Dash at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa.
