It's a Simpson sweep as Ron Jenkins Memorial wraps at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, MO.—Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, polished off a flawless weekend on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway, completing a sweep of the 11th annual Ron Jenkins Memorial.

Simpson backed his Friday-night victory with another Comp Cams Super Dirt Series feature win, this time leading the final 30 of 40 laps, outdistancing Clay Stuckey. Simpson earned $12,000 for the win, which included a $2,000 bonus courtesy of Mary Jenkins Holt in honor of the late Ron Jenkins, builder and owner of the original Lucas Oil Speedway.

Including a pair of $500 fast-time bonus awards plus a $100 series bonus each night for fast time, Simpson took home $20,200 for the two nights.

"I just want to thank everybody at Lucas Oil and the Jenkins family for the extra money they put up," Simpson said. "It means a lot. I go to work every day, from 7 until 3:30 and go out and work on my car afterward.

"I don't do this for a living. To be able to come down here ... I've had one other week when I brought home $20,000 close to home."

Daniel Adam beat Simpson to the lead at the start, the first time in two nights that Simpson had not set the pace. Adam rolled away to nearly a one-second lead before Simpson began to reel him in, drawing within .215 seconds by lap 10 with Terry Phillips another 1.2 seconds behind in third.

Simpson took the lead on lap 11, sliding past Adam on the inside coming off turn four. Just five laps later, Simpson had sped away to a two-second command over Adam with Clay Stuckey taking third away from Phillips.

"The top was better. I could see that and he had a pretty good cushion," Simpson said of Adam's early lead. "I knew I had to get out there and ride and just follow him. I tried to keep the car a little straighter than he was so I wouldn't burn up the right rear."

As action remained caution-free and the track took on rubber, Simpson upped his cushion to 2.4 seconds by the halfway mark on lap 20. Adam was able to cut into the margin a bit, but Simpson continued to sail along with a comfortable margin.

The first caution came on lap 33 as fourth-running Phillips slowed in turn four. That took away Simpson’s 1.8-second lead over Adam with seven to go, putting some mystery into the late stages of the event.

Simpson had a flawless restart and Adam slipped a bit, allowing Stuckey to get into second and R.C. Whitwell went to third. Simpson’s lead was .935 seconds with three to go when Adam slow in turn two with a flat tire, bringing out a caution.

Stuckey, of Shreveport, La., said he thought he might have a shot at Simpson the restart, but knew it had to happen quickly.

"I thought I could catch him. There was a second there I was slowly creeping up on him," Stuckey said. "I maybe had five laps left on my right rear tire. You could tell with about four laps to go that it was done, but with the weekend I've had I'll definitely take second."

Completing his big weekend, Simpson finished it off after the restart and beat Stuckey by .793 seconds at the finish. Whitwell was third with Cole Wells of Aurora fourth and Mason Oberkramer fifth after starting 14th.

A trio of southwest Missouri drivers joined Wells with top-10 finishes: Dillon McCowan of Urbana (seventh), Ryan Johnson from Aurora (eighth) and Payton Looney of Republic (ninth).

Simpson set fast qualifying time for the second straight night, with a lap of 16.091 in Group B. Simpson also went on to win his heat race to clinch the pole position for the feature.

Frye picks up Super Stocks win: An old pro celebrated in victory lane for the first time in long time as Late Model legend Bill Frye of Greenbrier, Ark., held off Taylor Carver for the $1,000 Hickamo Super Stocks feature win.

Frye, driving a car owned by regular-season Super Stocks track champion Tim Brown, led all but the opening lap. The former MLRA and MARS champion was driving the car to help his long-time friend Brown dial it in for the Super Stocks Big Buck 50 Presented by Whitetail Trophy Oct. 10-12.

“I think the last race I won was a motorcycle hare scramble,” a laughing Frye said in victory lane. He added that the Street Stock drove “to me, just like a Late Model. Man, it felt just like one. It’s been 40 years since I really drove a Street Stock and I don’t remember it being nothing like this.

“This is a lot better car than I had. I want to thank Tim and Staci Brown for the opportunity to do this. I tried to back out of it and he kept begging. I was like, ‘OK, I’ll come do this’ and I’m so glad I did.”

Frye was seventh on Friday in the feature, his first action since driving one event in a Late Model in 2022. Prior to that, he had last raced in 2019 in the Modified division.

Frye took the lead on lap two, but Carver soon was applying pressure with Johnny Fennewald third. It stayed that way until lap 10 when five cars spun in turn three to bring out the race’s fourth caution.

With everyone staying mostly attached to the bottom groove the last half of the race, Frye held off Carver by .260 seconds or just over one car length for the win. Lap-one leader Johnny Coats was third with Ted Welschmeyer fourth and Matthew Kay fifth.

Emma Davis earns Show-Me Vintage Racers win: Ninth-starting Emma Davis of Kansas City took over the lead with three leads to go and held on to earn the Show-Me Vintage Racers feature win, her first in her second season of racing with the SMVR.

"The track was great. The car just handled great," Davis said in victory lane.

Davis' parents, Beth and John Martin, also were in the SMVR field. John finished seventh in the feature and Beth was 12th.

Emma Davis started racing at the age of six in go-karts, then moved to E-Mods and Lightning Sprints.

"My parents raced with me tonight and I couldn't do it without them, or without the support of my wonderful husband," Davis said. "I have a great support system."

Jason Isabell went from sixth to first on the opening lap and led until lap eight, when seventh-starting Ken Brown took over the top spot. Caution flew on lap nine and, while the track was being cleared, Isabell’s car lost power to end his night.

That elevated Mark Evinger into second with six to go with Davis third. Davis made the pass for the lead headed into turn three on lap 13 and she held on for the win, beating Evinger by .346 seconds.

Damon Clevenger was third with Brown fourth.

Diamond Drag Boat Nationals conclude on Sunday: The 15th annual Diamond Drag Boat Nationals, sanctioned by the Kentucky Drag Boat Association, conclude with elimination rounds on Sunday. Grandstands at Lake Lucas open at 8:30 a.m. with eliminations tentatively set for 10:30 a.m.

USAC Sprint Cars next on the dirt: For the first time in nearly two decades, the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Cars return to Lucas Oil Speedway on Sept. 6 for the Rod End Supply Diamond Dirt Duel. The 30-lap feature will $6,000 to the winner. Hickamo Super Stocks will be the support class. Gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05.
