Johnson, Dunwoodie, Bailey shine at I-35 Speedway
WINSTON, Mo.—On Saturday, September 27th, the Larry McFee Trucking Night At the Races featured 71 cars competing at the 3/8-mile speedway.
The E-Mods event began the feature races, with Chris Dishong finishing first after maintaining his lead over Tony Layne during several late restarts. Tony Layne, who leads the E-Mod points standings, placed second. Nathan Asher started from pole position and finished third, followed by Garrett Stonum and Mark Anderson in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Sport Compacts came next where Brad Mick returned to victory lane after a three week hiatus. Joshua Robb came home second, followed by JR Curtis, Grant Sheetz, and Jason Teel rounding out the top five.
Vintage Open followed, with competitors racing closely throughout almost every lap. Ron Lefholz (car 55) held second position for most of the race and eventually overtook race leader Mike Lefholz (car 21). Car 55 finished first, followed by car 21 and Darrin Christy in car 54x.
AJ Sayers claimed his third Pure Stocks win in four weeks, narrowly missing a September sweep due to Calvin Teel. Sayers faced strong competition from Conrad Kaufman and points leader Shaun Wirtz. Gavin Grier finished second, with Wirtz, Kaufman, and Steven Ramilo rounding out the top five.
The B-Mod feature saw frequent lead changes. Clayton Stutesmun led early, but Michael Taylor took over until his engine failed with 1.5 laps to go. Adam Dunwoodie then held off Daniel Harris after a restart, finishing first, followed by Harris in second, Randy Smith Jr., Chase Moulton, and Chester Kaufman rounding out the top five.
Shayne Bailey led from the pole to win the USRA Stock Cars feature, holding off challenges from Matthew Lance and Austin Kaplan. Lance dropped to sixth after a late mistake, while Kaplan finished second. Chris Mercer was third, followed by Jake and Billie Hoover in fourth and fifth.
Houston Johnson secured his 16th USRA Modifieds win of the year, finishing over 11 seconds ahead. Steven Glenn took second after a close contest with Brad Johnson, who placed third. Richard Layne finished fourth, and Tyler Grooms (92) was fifth.
Abby Lee claimed victory in the shortened Beginner Sports Compact race after Leah Whitt's rollover. Rylie Robb, winner of the heat, finished second, with Whitt third, Hallie Waters fourth, and Athena Riley fifth.
The drivers, officials, crews, sponsors, track workers, and fans contributed to a successful night of racing. On Saturday, October 4th, there will be a break at I-35 Speedway for the USRA Nationals, and all I-35 Speedway participating drivers are wished success. Weekly Saturday Night Racing will resume on October 11th, followed by a double-feature weekend with the Heartland Modified Tour on October 17th and 18th.
