Patient Wolff claims Modified finale as USRA Nationals conclude at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, Mo.—Tyler Wolff's patience paid off Saturday night as the veteran driver from Fayetteville, Ark., took over over in the late going to claim the finale of the 12th annual Summit USRA Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway.
Wolff earned $5,000 for the USRA Modified 50-lap win as he beat Brandon Davis by a couple of car lengths for the victory in the final race of the marathon week of action.
With 314 total entries on the final night, other feature winners were Kris Jackson (B-Mods), Jaylen Wettengel (Stock Cars), Dustin Gulbrandson (Hobby Stocks) and Jason Weber (Tuners).
Wolff, winning for the second time in four nights, spent the majority of the race chasing 18-year-old Harley Dais who led the first 39 laps. Dais, of Winona, Minn., started on the pole and needed only five laps to open a nearly two-second lead over Wolff.
Dais lost ground in the traffic as Kyle Brown closed within a car length by the mid point on lap 25. Brown slipped up on lap 33, allowing Dais to expand his lead to 1.4 seconds, his biggest advantage of the race. Wolff re-emerged as a contender by lap 39, passing Brown.
Then Wolff grabbed the lead away from Dais on lap 40, taking over headed into turn three. Just one lap later, caution slowed the action and set up a nine-lap sprint to the finish as Wolff led Dais and Brown.
"I was trying (to be patient) but it sure is hard," Wolff said. "My patience is not very good. Man, that was a test of patience. Seeing him out front, I was wanting to go so bad I couldn't see straight. Finally, Kyle Brown got by me and I was like 'I need to get going a little bit better.' "
After leading the first 39 laps, Dais faded to fourth after the restart as Brandon Davis drove to second ahead of Brandon Givens. Davis took the lead on lap 44, but Wolff bounced back to the front the next time around. The entertaining battle was put on hold for caution at that point.
Dais, meanwhile, fell out of the race with mechanical issues with five laps remaining and fourth-running Brown also saw his night come to an end when his car slowed on the restart.
Wolff held off Davis as action resumed and finished a mere .199 seconds ahead at the checkers. Davis had to settle for second with Givens third, Nic Bidinger fourth and Alex Williamson fifth.
"I changed my line up and tried to be a little more aggressive and not wear the tires out. We made it work," Wolff said.
Houston Johnson of Kansas City finished eighth as he nailed down his first USRA Modified Championship after 26 overall wins this season.
"It's awesome and probably hasn't sank in just yet," Johnson said. "That's the goal I set out for at the beginning of the year. It wasn't easy. A lot of miles and a lot of late nights, but it's worth it."
Jackson captures B Mod feature: Kris Jackson led all 40 laps, but it wasn't easy as the Lebanon driver held off a pair of hard-charging challengers over the final laps for the $4,000 USRA B-Mod victory.
Jackson started on the outside of the three-deep front row and he took the early lead with Sheets advancing from fourth to second by lap four. Jackson pulled out to a half-second margin over Sheets by lap 10 of the 40-lapper.
Sheets began to close in on Jackson as those two broke away from third-place Chad Clancy by 2.5 seconds. Jackson’s lead was a slim .237 seconds when action slowed for caution on lap 18.
It was more of the same as action resumed, with Jackson and Sheets battling it out for the lead. Jackson had the answer each time Sheets challenged, with periodic cautions occurring as the two were putting on a good show up front.
After a lap 29 restart, Clancy was able to slide past Sheets on the outside. Jackson was able to take advantage of Clancy and Sheets fighting for second to built his lead to nearly one second by lap 35. The challengers closed in on Jackson with three to go, the duo three-wide coming to the line to finish lap 38.
Jackson rode the high groove and held on to score the win, beating Sheets by .546 seconds with Clancy third. Andy Bryant was fourth, more than four seconds behind the winner and Stephen Clancy rallied for fifth from 26th.
"We've got a great group of people in our race cars," Jackson said, noting the top three finishers were in J2 chassis that he and cousin Tony Jackson Jr. designed and Sheets bought the company last year. "I know Jon is going to be there waiting for me to mess up. I'm just glad I didn't hit the wall too many times. I'm not very good at that."
Wettengel claims Stock Cars victory: It was all Jaylen Wettengel in the USRA Stock Cars feature, as the Topeka, Kan., driver led 37 of 40 laps for the $4,000 win.
Wettengel rolled from the inside of row one to the lead and he opened a lead of nearly one second through eight laps over Myles Michehl. Wettengel hugged the low groove to maintain the top spot even as Michel pulled within a car length after a dozen laps.
The first caution flew on lap 14 with Wettengel’s lead sitting at .439 seconds over Michehl with Josh Cain in third. Wettengel continued to set the pace after the restart, with a one-second gap over Michehl at the midway point on lap 20.
Wettengel’s lead was more than one second at the 30-lap mark with no signs of slowing down, even in lapped traffic. But the field got a reprieve with eight to go as a third caution of the race flew.
Michehl took advantage of the opportunity and took the lead on lap 35 with an outside pass in turn four. Back came Wettengel, regaining the lead on lap 38 after diving to the bottom in turns one and two to get the advantage.
Wettengel held on to claim the win by .672 seconds over Michehl with Josh Cain third, Derek Green going from 26th to fourth and Shayne Bailey fifth.
"That whole race I knew there were heavy hitters behind me," Wettengel said. "Michehl was there, Cain was back there, I seen (Justin) Custer coming up through the field. I knew if I just stuck to my guns on the bottom ... there's always grip to this place coming off the bottom. If you just stay committed, it'll work out for you."
Gulbrandson caps Hobby Stocks title with feature win: Seventh-starting Dustin Gulbrandson of Sioux Falls, S.D., wrapped up a USRA National Championship with a victory in the Hobby Stocks, taking over the lead with 10 laps remaining. It was his 20th feature win of the year and was worth $1,500.
Parker Anderson led the first 19 laps, but lost it to Gulbrandson on a lap-20 restart. Three laps later, Friday night’s Hobby Stocks winner Taylor Donlan brought out a red flag with a spin in turn four that drew contact that left his car on its side.
Gulbrandson steadily increased his lead after the restart as the USRA Hobby Stocks points leader picked up the win by 1.29 seconds over Anderson with Scott Dobel third, Nick Brady fourth and Kevin Lacy fifth.
“That was definitely the longest race we’ve had all year,” Gulbrandson said in victory lane. “I’m fat and out of shape, so I was happy to see the white flag there. I about gave it away with two to go. Hats off to the track prep crew. I don’t think we could have had a better track.”
USRA Tuners win to Weber: Jason Weber of Enid, Okla., held on to claim a thriller over Steven Bevills in the $1,000-to-win USRA Tuners main event.
Bevills set the pace from his front-row starting spot before Weber took over the top position on lap eight. Sean Leasure joined the battle at the front and went into second on lap 13.
The top three broke away, staying within a half second of one another as the laps clicked by. As Bevills and Leasure jostled for second, Weber was able to open some breathing room and he went on to take the checkers by a few feet - .041 seconds over Bevills - to be exact as the runner-up made a last-lap charge.
“I seen it was Bevills behind me and me and Bevills had been joking all day about it,” Weber said. “I knew he wasn’t gonna do nothing to screw me up. I just squeezed him down a little bit. Rubbin’s racin'.”
Leasure took third with Dylan Whitley fourth and Kollin Teafatiller fifth.
