Ryan Bernal captures USAC CRA prize at Mohave Valley
MOHAVE VALLEY, Ariz.—Ryan Bernal raced to victory in Saturday night’s Avanti Windows & Doors USAC CRA Sprint Car feature at Arizona’s Mohave Valley Raceway.
Bernal (Hollister, California) set the tone quickly by establishing a new one-lap USAC CRA track record of 13.894 seconds during Woodland Auto Display / WC Friend Company Access Systems Qualifying.
Starting sixth in the 30-lap feature, he roared past Austin Williams with 12 circuits remaining to earn his 11th career USAC CRA Sprint Car victory, and his first in more than three years, in his Tom & Christy Dunkel owned No. 17x.
Braden Chiaramonte bolted from seventh to finish second, while Austin Williams led a race-high 15 laps (laps 4-18) in the feature to finish third. Series point leader R.J. Johnson bounced back from heavy contact in qualifying to finish fourth while Charles Davis Jr. rounded out the top-five.
Ricky Lewis, who led the initial three laps, fell out of the race with a 19th place result.
Rachel Clark, Kim Stolfus, and Addison awarded the "The Pride of Garden Grove" Brody Roa and his father, Brett, the $100 hard charger bonus from Steve Lafond. The veteran driver raced from 14th to 6th in the main event.
Johnson, Roa, Ricky Lewis and Davis won each of the four heat races while Chiaramonte scored the win in the semi-feature.
