Johnson, Glendenning, O'Neal, Kaplan triumph at I-35
WINSTON, Mo.—Another action packed night of racing at I-35 Speedway is in the books. As the racing season is quickly coming to an end, 116 total cars across 8 eight racing classes brought their best to the track this Saturday night. Tonight was Team Sprayfoam night at the races, as well as C.A.R.B night at the racetrack. During intermission, C.A.R.B handed out the Kaster Awards to the 3rd place finisher in the 1st heat ran in each class. They also had a free to enter scooter giveaway for the kids at the racetrack.
Moving into on-track action, Corey Myers collected his first feature win this season at I-35 Speedway. Myers held off strong challenges from Tony Layne and Garrett Stonum in the closing laps, but Layne would finish a respectable 2nd and Stonum 3rd. Cameron Sample ran up front all night and finished in 4th, and Mark Anderson in 5th. Tony Layne holds the track points lead, Layne is ahead of Nathan Hampton by 225 points, and Garrett Stonum by 284.
Sport Compacts rolled out next, where Brad Mick maneuvered to the front for his 17th feature win this season. Andrew Robb led many laps before finishing 2nd, JR Curtis in 3rd, Harold Robb Jr in 4th and Joshua Robb in 5th. Brad Mick is your track points leader, holding a 292 point lead over Ryan Hinkle and 339 points ahead of JR Curtis.
Paul Glendenning jumped out front and didn’t look back in the Late Model feature race, Glendenning’s first feature win at I-35 this racing season. Tommy Cordray ran strong all night and finished in 2nd, Michael King in 3rd, Jason Parks 4th and Brandon Barnes 5th. Tommy Cordray holds your track points lead by 222 points over last year's track champion Michael King.
In a 22 car Pure Stock field, Jake Starmer found himself back in victory lane for the 2nd time this season, Starmer’s first win at I-35 since June 28th. Clint Baker ran in 2nd, Gavin Grier started 8th and finished 3rd, CJ Turner 4th and Shaun Wirtz in 5th. Shaun Wirtz holds the track points lead by 207 points over James Silkwood, and AJ Sayers in 3rd 285 points back from Wirtz.
Before tonight’s racing action, we held a moment of silence for one of our past racers Dennis O’Neal passing away. Dennis’s son Tyler regularly races at I-35 in the USRA B-Modifieds, and tonight Tyler had some extra help in the feature race. Tyler started on the front row and had to battle through some late race restarts, but the 27 was the car to beat all race long. Chris Wright started in 11th before finishing 2nd, Josh Barnes in 3rd, Matt Avila in 4th and Randy Smith Jr. in 5th. Adam Dunwoodie holds a 566 point lead in track points over Londen McClure, and Chase Moulton is 672 points back.
In the craziest race of the night, Austin Kaplan narrowly collects his 4th feature win this season in the USRA Stock Cars. Kaplan and Tyler Cadwallader were side by side coming off of turn 4, and it was as close as it gets coming by the flag stand. Track officials made sure they had it right before making the official call on who won, but that was a great finish between 2 elite Stock Car drivers. Shayne Bailey led many laps before finishing 3rd, Matthew Lance in 4th and Doug Keller in 5th. Anthony Robertson controls the Stock Car track points, holding a 398 point lead over Doug Keller.
Houston Johnson got back to work after picking up his USRA National Championship last weekend at USRA Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland,Mo.. Johnson grabbed his 17th feature win in the USRA Modifieds this racing season. Brad Johnson didn’t make it easy for Houston tonight. Coming off a late race restart, Brad took his shot at the lead, but Houston found the speed to pull away and Brad Johnson finished 2nd. Steven Glenn in 3rd, Jason Pursley in 4th and Tyler Grooms in 5th. Houston holds a 554 point lead over Brad Johnson in the track points standings.
And Bentley Long drove away with the Beginner Sport Compact feature race, Long’s 2nd feature win this season. Rylie Robb finished 2nd, Cooper Canady in 3rd, Derek Johnson 4th and Leah Whitt in 5th.
Thank you to all the amazing race fans that came out for a perfect night for racing this past Saturday night and keeping the energy going all night long. Thank you to all our track officials and safety crew members for keeping everyone safe and providing an exciting night of racing. And one more big thanks to all the drivers and their crew members for bringing fast cars across all classes and your best to the track every Saturday night. We will see everyone next Friday and Saturday night, as we welcome back the Heartland Modified Touring Series back to I-35 Speedway for another action packed night of dirt-track racing.
