Shadren Turner tops Heartland Modified Tour season finale at I-35, Williams is champ
WINSTON, Mo.—Championship pressure hung thick over I-35 Speedway as the USRA Heartland Modified Tour wrapped up its 2025 campaign with a single deciding night after Friday’s opener was washed out by rain. Just 25 points separated the top three in the standings entering the finale, with Bobby Williams leading Brandon Givens by just four points, and race winner hopeful Shadren Turner another 21 markers back, setting the stage for the tightest title fight in series young history.
When the green flag waved, USRA National Points Champion and local I-35 standout Houston Johnson surged from the outside pole and took command early. Williams rode inside the top five, doing exactly what he needed to maintain his title edge, while Turner and Givens clawed for every position behind him. Just past the 10-lap mark, disaster struck when Givens’ 10B machine suddenly snapped around in turn one, later reported as a tire failure that sent his championship hopes spinning to a halt.
Johnson led the field back to green with Turner in pursuit and Williams still in control of the title picture, but the tone of the race shifted again inside the final ten laps when a late caution bunched the field. On the restart, Turner made his move, throwing his No. 56 Skyrocket deep into turn one to challenge Johnson. A couple of laps later, Johnson’s car broke while leading, handing the race to Turner and tightening the points picture even further.
From there, Turner drove away to score his fifth tour win of the season, but Williams’ podium finish was enough to secure the 2025 USRA Heartland Modified Tour Championship. When the checkers fell, Williams topped the standings with 1659 points, followed by Turner at 1643 (-16), Givens at 1626 (-33), Wyatt Gaggero at 1611 (-48), and Dustin Hodges completing the top five at 1507 (-152).
Race winner Shadren Turner said in victory lane, “I don't know if the 97 changed lines or what happened, I just figured my best shot was if I could get up beside him and I'm glad it worked out the way it did. I have a lot of friends and family here tonight so this is pretty cool. Congrats to Bobby on the Championship. We raced B-Mods a lot together and both have Skyrockets so it’s pretty cool!”
Newly crowned champion Bobby Williams added, “This is what being real consistent gets you right here. This is the second time in my career I've done this... won a championship without winning a regular season race. I really want a race win and maybe we can still get one before the end of our season here, but congrats to Shadren. He drove a hell of a race, and we race with a lot of really good guys so hats off to them. Thank you to everyone who helps me on this thing!”
With the checkered flag on the 2025 USRA Heartland Modified Tour season, the series closes out a dramatic championship battle, and eyes now turn toward 2026, where a returning field of proven contenders and hungry new challengers are already loading up to write the next chapter.

BAILEY, DUNWOODIE AMOND SUPPORT CLASS WINNERS AT I-35 SPEEDWAY
By Dylan Vore: Track Announcer
WINSTON, Mo. -- Another exciting night of racing wrapped up at I-35 Speedway as the season nears its end, with only two events left counting this night. Before the races, a moment of silence honored Darrell Whitt, with his son and grandson leading a pace lap. The Heartland Modified Touring Series returned for their second visit, crowning Bobby Williams as the 2025 champion. The evening also featured a Halloween trick-or-treat and costume contest, with drivers handing out candy to kids during intermission.
The E-Modifieds, known for their competitive edge at I-35 Speedway, kicked off the evening's racing action. The rumble of engines and the roar of fans set a lively backdrop as the cars rolled onto the track, each driver eager for the checkered flag. From the drop of the green, Coleman Browning and Tony Layne traded positions in a tense battle that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. In the closing laps, the intensity peaked as Browning made a daring move on the bottom side to edge past Layne on the final lap. The crowd erupted with cheers as Layne mounted one last charge into turns 3 and 4, but Browning held firm to capture the win. Layne settled for second, Mark Anderson finished third, Derrick Mahoney claimed fourth, and Cameron Sample rounded out the top five with his second consecutive top five finish.
Next up, the Pure Stocks put on a show of their own. After an intense battle for the lead, AJ Sayers looked poised for victory until Clint Baker made a decisive move in the final laps to hold on and grab the win. Sayers led multiple laps but ultimately finished second. Jason Thurman was fast all night and secured third place, thanks to his consistent speed that kept him in contention throughout the race. Conrad Kaufman followed in fourth, and CJ Turner rounded out the top five.
Then it was time for the Heartland Modifieds, and the anticipation in the air was palpable as fans leaned forward, ready for a showdown. Who was going to win, who would claim the Heartland Modified Championship. USRA National Champion Houston Johnson set the quick time in qualifying and after the redraw lined up on the front row, his car glistening under the track lights. The green flag waved, and Johnson looked unbeatable in the feature race, pulling out to a lead of over two seconds as he sliced through each lap with precision. It had become a race between Johnson and Shadren Turner running in second at a restart. Turner grabbed the lead coming out of turn 2 on the restart and then on lap 18, drama struck. Johnson’s car suddenly slowed coming out of turn two on the next lap and his race was over. With Johnson out, Turner seized the opportunity, charging ahead to claim the feature win and wrap up the Heartland Modified season in style. Wyatt Gaggero came home in second, his team celebrating a strong finish. Series champion Bobby Williams secured third place, capping off a consistent season that saw him clinch the championship title. Chevy Coleman finished fourth, while Tad Davis rounded out the top five.
Sport Compacts had track points leader Brad Mick picking up Sport Compact feature win number 18 this racing season. Joshua Robb did all he could to get around Mick, but came home with a 2nd place finish, Chris Lewis in 3rd, JR Curtis in 4th and Conner RIgsby in 5th.
Adam Dunwoodie collected his 3rd feature win in the USRA B-Modifieds. Dunwoodie leads the track points in the B-Mods with one race to go. Dustin Dennison finished in 2nd, Londen McClure in 3rd, Kyle Henning in 4th and Clay Hale came home 5th.
And in our final race of the night, the USRA Stock Cars had Shayne Bailey collecting the feature win. Doug Keller ran strong coming home in 2nd, Tyler Cadwallader in 3rd, Jeff Dixon in 4th and track points leader Anthony Robertson rounded out the top 5.
Thank you to all the amazing race fans that came out for a chilly night at the racetrack this past Saturday night and keeping the energy going all night long. Thank you to all our track officials and safety crew members for keeping everyone safe and providing an exciting night of racing. And one more big thanks to all the drivers and their crew members for bringing fast cars across all classes and your best to the track every Saturday night. We will see everyone next Saturday night for our Championship night of racing!
