Davenport, Sheppard Top Qualifying Night at World Finals

CONCORD, N.C.—The opening night of World of Outlaws World Finals saw the World of Outlaws Real American Beer Late Model Series presented by DIRTVision partake in a pair of Qualifying sessions, setting the lineups for Heat Race competition on Thursday and Friday.

Jonathan Davenport laid down the fastest lap in the first session of the night with a 14.909-second trip around The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Group B. That was just enough to steal the Simpson Quick Time Award from Nick Hoffman, who led the way in Group A with a 14.937.

Drake Troutman, Ryan Gustin, Brandon Sheppard and Hudson O’Neal will join Davenport and Hoffman as Heat Race polesitters on Thursday night. World of Outlaws points leader Bobby Pierce will come from the outside of the front row of Heat 5 as he looks to lock up his second Series championship.

Several regional heroes put themselves in position for a strong night, including North Carolina’s own Jamison McBride, who will start alongside Troutman on the front row of Heat 2 as he looks to start his first World of Outlaws Feature. Cedartown, GA’s Austin Smith also found plenty of speed, wheeling his No. 11S machine to the outside of Heat 6 alongside O’Neal.

The second session saw only one car dip into the 14-second bracket, and it was Sheppard laying down a 14.975-second lap in Group A. Chris Madden set the fastest time of Group B with a 15.149.

Dale McDowell, Tyler Erb, Dustin Sorensen and Jimmy Owens also earned the pole for the rest of Friday’s Heat Races. Plenty of World of Outlaws regulars made major gains between sessions, including Dennis Erb Jr., who went from 24th in his group in Thursday’s session to fifth in Friday’s, as well as Ethan Dotson, who timed in 11th in the first session and fourth in the second.
