Brandon Overton Completes Weekend Sweep of Winter Freeze XVI at Screven
SYLVANIA, Ga.—Brandon Overton completed an impressive sweep of the ‘Winter Freeze XVI’ weekend at Screven Motor Speedway on Saturday evening, as the Evans, Georgia superstar led all but two circuits during the 50-lap headliner to bag a hefty $25,000 windfall! Brandon, who timed in second quickest overall during the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series qualifying session, won his heat race in preliminary action and later rolled off from the outside of the front row in the A-Main. After leading the first six circuits, “Big Sexy” powered back around Daulton Wilson to grab the point for good on the ninth lap.
At the unfurling of the checkered flag in front of the partisan crowd, Overton picked up his third straight win overall by besting Wilson by 0.848 of a second. The driver known as the “Big Perm” was strong throughout the contest, officially led laps 7-8, and was awarded a $10,000 payday for his strong runner-up performance. Fast timer Ryan Gustin rounded out the podium in third despite suffering spoiler damage during the race. Payton Freeman flexed his muscle to finish in the fourth spot, while Benji Hicks hard charged past fifteen competitors to nab the final position inside of the top five.
“I was so darn nervous because I knew my daughter was here tonight,” exclaimed the winning Overton in victory lane at the Sylvania, Georgia facility. “That is more pressure than anybody could put on me. I just wanted to win one for her. Thanks to all of these great fans that packed out the stands and a huge thanks to (track promoter) Redd for putting this show on. It’s awesome to win here close to the house - I just love racing here at Screven!”
Brandon Overton’s ninth career Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Showtime Properties win came aboard a Riggs Motorsports-owned #76 Longhorn Chassis with sponsorship in part from Budweiser, Dude Wipes, Heartbeat Hot Sauce, Garnto Southern, Riggs Fiber, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Big Dog Stump and Tree Service, RW Powell Construction, Supply Chain Management, Muscle Factory, VG Performance, Bilstein Shocks, and Boswell Oil Company.
The second event of the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series season drew a 29-car field to Screven Motor Speedway. Dalton Cook posted the quickest lap in MRP Fantasy Racing hot laps with a time of 15.504 seconds, while the “Reaper” Ryan Gustin earned Fast Time honors during VP Racing Fuels qualifying with his quick lap of 14.330 seconds. The World of Outlaws Late Model Series star was awarded an extra $750 for his stellar qualifying effort courtesy of SHARCO. Dan Ebert, Brandon Overton, and Drake Troutman won the trio of heat races, while Matthew Larson was victorious in the lone consolation event.
A total of seven caution flags slowed the 50-lap ‘Winter Freeze XVI’ grand finale. Tucker Anderson, who had climbed to as high as second in the running order, slowed to bring out the first yellow on lap 15. Casey Roberts then slowed on lap 19 prior to a multi-car incident on the ensuing restart. Debris on the track was the reason for the fourth caution on lap 31 before Tucker Anderson drew his second yellow flag on lap 36. Dillon Daves then went for a spin on the subsequent restart and Dan Ebert got the worst out of the final incident of the evening on lap 39.
Next up for the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Showtime Properties competitors will be a doubleheader in the states of Alabama and Georgia on March 6-7. On that Friday night, a $4,000 top prize will be up for grabs at Penton Raceway in Lafayette, Alabama. A trip over to North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth, Georgia will then greet the SAS stars on that Saturday with a $5,000 winner’s check on the line. More information on the double-dip will be available soon on www.sasdirt.com.
