Rice, Davenport win Show-Me 100 prelim

WHEATLAND, MO.—The best was saved for last on Friday night at Lucas Oil Speedway as Josh Rice captured a wildly entertaining Cowboy Classic to conclude Night 2 of the 34th annual Show-Me 100 Presented by Ace Doran Hauling and Rigging.

Rice, leading contender for Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Rookie of the Year, took the lead with five laps to in the 45-lapper, which had been postponed due to rain on Thursday night.

Earlier, Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., led all 40 laps to win the Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson as drivers earned points in both features toward the starting lineup for Saturday night's $75,000-to-win, 100-lap feature.

"It's cool," Rice said in victory lane. "That has to be a race of the year candidate. Man, that was awesome. I'm speechless, honestly. I did not think I was gonna show up here and be good. It's crazy. I can't thank everybody enough."

Rice, 27, is making his first appearance at Lucas Oil Speedway. After setting fast qualifying time for the Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson portion of the program he finished eight in that feature and is assured of starting near the front of Saturday's finale.

In a race with three leaders on a track that third-place Chris Ferguson said was definitely "cowboy up," there was no lacking of action. Ferguson went from 14th at the start to the lead in just eight laps and led a race-high 25 laps.

In a wild, three-way battle with the laps ticking away and cars bouncing about, Rice took the lead as Ferguson slipped and Garrett Alberson - who had quite the night himself - went into second.

Alberson, of Las Cruces, N.M., destroyed his primary car in a wild flip in turn one while leading the first heat of the Gibson Tribute program. He unloaded a backup car and settled for 25th in that feature before refocusing after the wild ride for the Cowboy Classic feature.

"Luckily my dad instilled in us good attitudes. One of the first days I ever drove a race car, I crashed the bejesus out of it and he told me I had to get back in another one. It's like get back on the horse, it's part of it."

Davenport shredded a tire on lap 11 to bring out the caution. Alberson settled into second behind Ferguson after the restart, a second back Ferguson by lap 20 as Rice moved to third.

By lap 25, the top two had separated with Rice, Ricky Thornton Jr. and Hudson O’Neal battling for third. Meanwhile, local fans were cheering LOLMDS rookie Dillon McCowan of nearby Urbana. After taking a provisional and starting 25th, McCowan had charged to sixth just in front of Davenport, who was rallying from his early race flat.

The yellow-flag parade continued with another on lap 30 as Clay Stuckey slowed with a right-rear issue. Rice had just taken over second with Alberson third with 15 to go. This time Ferguson couldn’t hold off the pursuers as Alberson took advantage of the restart by sliding around Ferguson on lap 33. The leaders caught lapped traffic with five to go, darting and diving out of turn four with Rice emerging in front to complete lap 40.

Rice, the leader of the series Rookie of the Year chase, took it home from there by beating Alberson by 2.4 seconds for his third LOLMDS feature win.

“This place is awesome. If you didn't enjoy that, you need to go home," Rice said as fans cheered his victory lane interview. "Coming here I did not think this was gonna be a place ... I just wanted to get through it. I didn't think we'd be a contender."

Ferguson, the 2022 Show-Me 100 winner, settled for third with O’Neal fourth, Overton fifth, Davenport sixth and McCowan seventh.

"This race car was awesome. I hated that we broke some stuff and couldn't race with them guys the last couple of laps," Ferguson said. "I've got a lot of stuff to fix for tomorrow. I had a blast out there and passed a lot of good cars. Congrats to Josh and Garrett. I'm a little disappointed, but that was a fun race."

The 13th annual Cowboy Classic honors the late Allen "Cowboy" Chancellor, long-time owner-promoter of the MLRA Late Model Series.

Davenport rolls in Gibson Tribute: Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., made quick work of the field in winning the Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson, leading all 40 laps in an event that took only 13 minutes to complete. There was just one caution, on lap two. Davenport was unstoppable - as he so often is at Wheatland.

“Set-up wise we were pretty close. I could run the top, the bottom and the middle," Davenport said after the $10,000 victory, the first of two features on the evening for the Late Models.

Davenport set the pace from the start, with a lap two spin by Garrett Alberson briefly slowing the action. When the 40-lapper resumed, Davenport opened a 1.6-second lead over Chris Ferguson after just five laps and nearly two seconds by lap 10. Eighth-starting Brandon Overton moved to third by that point.

Ferguson, of Mt. Holly, N.C., sliced the deficit to just under one second over the next five circuits as the leaders began to deal with lapped traffic. As the race continued a lengthy green-flag run, Davenport was able to maintain his margin by the mid point with Ferguson and Overton continuing to run 2-3 as 14th-starting Brandon Sheppard advanced into fourth.

"We got held up there when we first caught lapped traffic because I didn't really know where to go," Davenport said. "Once I felt like I couldn't move around, then we got rolling pretty good."

Sheppard grabbed third on lap 29, but Davenport was beginning to check out as he led Ferguson by 2.8 seconds with Sheppard another 1.2 behind Ferguson. Without a caution to give anyone else a chance, Davenport continued to pour it on.

He wound up 3.66 seconds in front of Ferguson at the finish in taking his 11th victory at Lucas Oil Speedway since the spring of 2023 and 96th career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win. It was win No. 4 on the series this season.

“This race track changed like five different times during that feature and I think it was about ready to change one more time," Davenport said. "I tried to miss the holes whenever I could. It had a little character to it, but what an awesome race track."

Sheppard finished third with Overton fourth and Mason Oberkramer fifth. Seriers points leader and 2021 Show-Me 100 winner Hudson O’Neal was sixth.

"The track had character and we weren't really ready for that," said Ferguson. "I was cowboy-ing up there a couple of times. But JD's so good here, he was kind of setting his own pace. It was hard to dodge the holes and also dodge the lapped cars.

"I saw he was struggling with a couple of them and it kind of let me get close, then he got by them. I'm just tickled to be here."

A total of 51 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and 27 Hickamo Super Stocks drivers checked into the pits. The three-night event, which culminates with Saturday’s $75,000-to-win, 100-lap main event, pays $10,000 to win the preliminary Late Model features. Drivers accumulate points on their finishes both nights to help set the lineup for Saturday night's finale.

Rice was the Allstar Performance fast qualifier, with a time at 15.198 seconds out of Group A. Davenport paced Group B for the second straight night, at 15.257 seconds.

The race honored Don and Billie Gibson, who started the Show-Me 100 in 1993 at their West Plains Motor Speedway.

Schultz grabs Hickamo Super Stocks win: Terry Schultz of Sedalia led wire-to-wire in the 20-lap Hickamo Super Stocks feature, beating his teammate Blaine Ewing.

"It was lucky we started up front because I think it was gonna be tricky to pass," Schultz said, noting his front row starting spot.

After three cautions in the first nine laps, Schultz dominated the final half of the race. He pulled away to win by about five car lengths over Ewing with Mike Striegel holding off Johnny Fennewald for third.

Finale on Saturday: Opening ceremonies are set for 6:45 p.m. Saturday with B-Mains and the Midwest Sheet Metal Challenge setting the final lineup for rthe $75,000-to-win 100-lap main event. O'Reilly USRA Stock Cars also will beon the program.

Colonel Joshua Pope, the Commander at the 509th Maintenance Group, Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri will serve as Grand Marshal as Lucas Oil Speedway pays tribute to the active military and veterans during the Memorial Day Weekend. Kansas native Travis Marvin will perform the National Anthem during Saturday’s opening ceremonies.
