Pursley earns first Late Model win to highlight Challenge Cup Round 2 at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, Mo.—Dayton Pursley overcame nerves and pressure from a pair of challengers to earn his first Late Model victory on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway.

The 23-year-old from Hermitage held off Kaeden Cornell and JC Morton to prevail in the Hermitage Lumber Late Models for a $1,000 pay day in Round 2 of the Pitts Hmes and Realty Challenge Cup.

A total of 117 cars checked into the pits and other feature winners included Wyatt Gaggero (Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modifieds), Jon Sheets (Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods), Mason Beck (O'Reilly USRA Stock Cars) and Blaine Ewing (Hickamo Super Stocks).

Pursley, who's driven Modifieds and B Mods at Lucas Oil Speedway during his young career, and also dabbled in sprint cars, was ecstatic in victory lane. He grew up coming to the track watching his dad, Jason Pursley, race Modifieds.

"First of all I have to say thank you God for even letting me be here and do this," Pursley said. "But it does feel good. I'd like to say happy birthday to my mom and happy Father's Day to my dad and all the other fathers.

"I don't even know what to say. I was so nervous. I had to go (to the bathroom) before (the race) and I didn't even go. I was too nervous. I want to thank my wife for being here. I don't know, just everybody who helps me."

Pursley started on the pole and opened a half-second lead over Cornell by lap 10. The second half of the race saw Cornell move to the high groove in turns three and four and the low side in one and two in an effort to chase down the leader. Meanwhile, Morton advanced into third with those three well ahead of the field.

As Cornell and Morton battled it out over the final laps, Pursley was able to take it to the checkers for a .457-second win over Cornell. Morton wound up third with Tucker Cox fourth and Cole Henson fifth.

The Challenge Cup events pay extra money with $1,000 going to the winners in the USRA Modifieds and Late Models, and $750 to win the other three classes.

Gaggero prevails in Modifieds: Eighth-starting Wyatt Gaggero took command after a caution midway through the Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified feature and drove away from there for his first win of the season.

Gaggero, from Wichita, Kan., beat Henry Chambers by more than three seconds to pick up the $1,000 victory.

Chase Sigg led the opening lap before Chambers took the top spot on lap two. Chambers opened a three-second lead over Gaggero before a lap-nine caution wiped away that margin.

The yellow was exactly what Gaggero needed, as he took the lead on the restart. Gaggero dominated form there and wound up prevailing by 3.4 seconds over Chambers by the finish. Sigg was third with Paden Phillips fourth and Cole Campbell fifth.

Sheets takes B-Mod victory: Jon Sheets' flag-to-flag victory in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod feature saw him beat J.T. Carroll by just over a half-second. It was Sheets' second feature win of the season at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Sheets, of Nevada, grabbed the lead at the start after a melee before an official lap could be completed saw several cars either eliminated or head ot the pits. He opened a 1.5-second margin over Morton by the halfway point on lap 10 with 12th-starting J.T. Carroll into third and Kris Jackson, who started 14th, into fourth.

Morton rolled to a stop atop turn two on lap 11 to bring out a caution and put an end his chances. Sheets maintained his lead as the race remained caution-free the rest of the way and held off Carroll by .602 seconds.

“I guess on that start I was moving pretty well and I saw carnage everywhere," Sheets said. "It was a long race. The race track was good, maybe a little bit top-dominant but the track must have been pretty good as the 66 (Ryan Gillmore) went to the tail and raced back up to third."

Gillmore was third with Jackson fourth and Cayden Stacye fifth.

Ewing wins Super Stocks thriller: Blaine Ewing of Green Ridge, Mo., made the sixth and final lead change the winner, coming out of the final turn, beating teammate Terry Schultz for the Hickamo Super Stock feature.

It appeared that Schultz would pick up the win before Ewing ran him down in sight of the finish line. Ewing's margin at the checkers was .228 seconds in his first Lucas Oil Speedway win of 2026.

“Honestly I didn't even see the white flag," Ewing said. "It just worked out for us. That's our other team car. I know it real well and it's fast. This place has been kryptonite for me these last couple of years, but I think we're finally starting to get it figured out."

Pole starter and first-lap leader Mike Striegel saw his car lose power entering turn three on lap two. Fortunately, all the cars closing in navigated around him.

Ewing led a lap after the restart before Johnny Fennewald took command on lap three. Ewing regained the lead on lap eight, passing Fennewald coming off turn two. But it was Schultz who wrested second from Fennewald on lap 11 before passing Ewing for the top spot the next time around.

Ewing worked last-lap magic by using a lapped car as pick in the final turn, passing Schultz for the victory. Fennewald finished third with Aaron Poe fourth and Jacob Rexing fifth.

Beck takes Stock Cars feature: Mason Beck of Urbana captured his first victory of the season, leading wire-to-wire in the 20-lap O’Reilly USRA Stock cars feature.

Beck started on the pole and set the pace from the start with Jayden Bears of Kansas City giving chase. Those two separated from the field by lap five right before a trio of cautions slowed the action.

Bears pulled alongside Beck on lap 12, but was unable to nudge into the lead. The two remained in a tight battle as caution flew on lap 17, just after Beck led by a few inches at the start-finish line.

The three-lap shootout to the finish saw Beck hang on to beat William Garner by .816 seconds with Dawson Fennewald third, Darrell Hurt fourth and Bryan White fifth.

“After I rolled this thing at (USRA) Nationals last year I haven’t felt comfortable in the car and honestly about halfway through the race, I didn’t feel comfortable again. It just won’t do what I want,” Beck said. “In a stacked field like we’ve got, everybody in here, you can’t count out.”

Next up: Coming up on June 26 will be the Friday Night Frenzy-Red & Tacky 150 Enduro. Hickamo Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Legends have full programs before the 150-lap Enduro feature. Enduro drivers can register online with Lucas Oil Speedway. The next night will see the Open Wheel Road to the Hockett Round 2 as POWRi 410 Outlaw Sprints, POWRi WAR Sprints and 305 IMCA RaceSaver Sprints will return.

Rounding out the full weekend is Short Course Side-by-Side Outlaw Series in day time action June 26-28 on the off road course.
