McKenna Snaps 3-Year drought with Ray Houck Memorial Score at Adams County

CORNING, Ia.—Charlie McKenna outran the competition and incoming weather to capture victory in Saturday’s Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing Series’ return to Adams County Speedway.
Saturday saw the first of 7 dual races come to fruition, as both the East and West Series came together to the famed half-mile oval at the Adams County Fairgrounds in Corning, Iowa. After the track had suffered five straight weeks of rainouts, a field of 23 cars made it a night to remember as the SLMR Series paid tribute to long time official at the track, Ray Houck.
With five weeks of being rained out, the track held a great deal of moisture in it which made for a lightning-fast race track for Keyser Manufacturing Qualifying. After setting fast time last night at Boone County Raceway, Webster City, Iowa’s Jason Hahne was back on top of the leaderboard in Corning when he topped group 2 with the overall fastest lap of 19.745 seconds, just over .2 seconds off the track record established by former SLMR regular, Ben Schaller.
The first qualifying group on the night was led by East Series Point Leader Blair Nothdurft. The Renner, South Dakota native stopped the clocked at 19.966 seconds to set the tone in the early stages of qualifying. The third and final group was topped by Tad Pospisil. The 3-Time West Series Champion and 2020 East Series Champion timed in at 20.192 seconds.
The three heat races on the night saw Troy Morris III, Dave Eckrich and Kyle Berck all take rather decisive victories. After the qualifying and heat race points were added up, Tad Pospisil sat at the top of the list giving him first chance at the Skyline Materials Lucky 6th Place Starter bonus for the second night in a row. However, unlike Friday at Boone County, Pospisil declined the chance to start sixth for a chance to earn an extra $500 should he win the main event form sixth. That honor would ultimately go to Blair Nothdurft after the lineup was set.
The 23 drivers who packed the pit area would come back out at the end of the night and take center stage for the 30-lap Ray Houck Memorial main event. The drama began early as while the field formed up for their 4-wide parade lap, Jesse Sobbing ducked into the hot pit area with trouble. The reigning West Series Champion would make it back out to the track before the green flag dropped, but he would have to surrender his 13th starting position and tag the rear of the field.
Kyle Berck and Charlie McKenna shared the front row as the main event came to life under the green flag. McKenna was quick to get to the top side of turns 1 and 2 and take the hole shot, and from there, the Ames, Iowa driver would establish a strong pace to open up the race.
Multiple battles began to take place in the remainder of the top five as Tad Posipisil, Jake Neal, Kyle Berck, Troy Morris III, Jason Hahne, and Blair Nothdurft all exchanged positions back and forth. Many drivers tried to dive low through the corners, but the outside line proved to be the fast lane around the big half-mile speedway.
Four caution flags would slow this event, and the first of them came with six laps completed for a spin in turn four when Corey Zeitner tried to make a move on JC Wyman for position, but Zeitner missed his mark. Just five laps later, 9-Time Adams County Track Champion Chris Spieker went around in turn three. Zeitner and Spieker would finish 21st and 22nd in the finishing order.
From there, the race went through its longest green flag stint as the next caution flag would not come out until the 7-to-go mark. In those green-flag laps, multiple drivers began to sideline their cars to the infield, including Jason Hahne who was battling just outside the top five.
As the race wore on, Troy Morris III proved to have arguably the fastest car on the track. The Californian who now resides in Waterloo, Iowa ran the top side of the speed and was making tremendous headway towards the front. He drove over the top of turn two a couple of times which stalled his progress, but by the third time he did, it resulted in an incident bringing out the next caution. Morris would end up finishing 18th after what was looking to be his career-best run with the SLMR Series.
After the final caution came out with only two laps remaining, McKenna continued to lead while Neal, Pospisil and Berck were right on his heels. The final green flag flew, and McKenna and Neal were able to separate early. Neal tried everything to close the gap, but it would not be enough as Charlie McKenna went on to lead all 30 laps and take home a $5,000 payday as he won the Ray Houck Memorial. As McKenna was down in victory lane, the rain began to fall, but it did not stop the smiles and congratulations from going around with his crew.
The win was McKenna’s Sixth career SLMR win all-time and his first win with SLMR since winning at the Thayer County Fair races back in 2023. McKenna also became the 11th different winner in 29 races all-time at the Adams County Speedway for SLMR.
Jake Neal crossed the line in second, however in post-race inspection, the Omaha, Nebraska driver’s car was deemed to be around 8 pounds too light at the scale, and was relegated to the rear of the finishing order.
This made Tad Pospisil the new runner-up finisher with Kyle Berck in third. Andrew Kosiski would be credited with fourth after a late-race surge forward, and Dylan Sillman came from 12th to round out the top five earning him the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger award on the night.
The first East vs. West dual race is now completed, and so, the attention goes back towards the East Series as two races are on the horizon for the tour in the upcoming week. On Wednesday, June 24th, the East tour makes its way back into Iowa with a trip to another half-mile, the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa. Following that race will be a Saturday-night showdown at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Missouri to close out the week.
