Sweet, Abreu top Eldora Million prelims
(Rossburg, OH) -- Brad Sweet and Rico Abreu each won preliminary features on the opening night of the first-ever Winged Sprint Car Million at Eldora Speedway.
Sweet grabbed the lead from Aaron Reutzel on a lap 13 double-file restart, then cruised the rest of the way to the 25-lap victory.
"Aaron (Reutzel) was setting a really good pace. I was surprised he took the top on the restart," said Sweet. "I was just able to get a good run on the inside and drive across, and once I got into clean air, I could just drive away."
Abreu, who started outside front row of the nightcap, fell behind Brian Brown and David Gravel at the drop of the green but rallied back to chase down and pass Gravel before battling past Brown for the lead on lap 11.
"I just paced myself knowing my car was going to come in at the end of the race," Abreu said. "I started catching them through 3 and 4 and I got stuck up to them, then I was able to pick them off one by one."
Rico was racing with a heavy heart after losing his good friend Gary
Zarounian earlier in the day. "He was a Champ Car owner I was going to race for, but more important he was a great friend and a mentor to me in racing."
The other big news of the day was when it was announced Anthony Macri had stepped out of the 39m family owned car he was very successful driving the last couple seasons. Hall of Fame driver Lance Dewease stepped in at the last minute but failed to make either of the two Wednesday features.
Thursday night's 50-lap A-main lineup is yet to be determined, based on a set of heat races whereby the top points earners from Wednesday night will start up front and the top three finishers of the heats will advance to the $1,002.023 dollars to win 50-lap A-Main.
Carson Macedo was the top points earner and will start on the pole of Thursday night's first of six heat races, Logan Schuchart, David Gravel, Brad Sweet. Kyle Larson, and Aaron Reitzel will be pole sitters in heats 2 through 6 respectively,
Heat winners will draw for spots 1 through 6 of the Eldora Million main event.
C and B Mains will make up the rest of the preliminary races on Thursday
