Chad Clancy pockets $2,020 for winning Mike Tanner Memorial at I-35

(Winston, MO) -- One hundred thirty-six (136) race cars checked in at I-35 Speedway for the Generational Buildings Finish Strong Mike Tanner Memorial. The Medieval USRA Stock Cars paid $2,020 to win plus other bonuses and the Sport Compacts paid $300 to win with other bonuses though out the field. After rains soaked the grounds Friday the I-35 Speedway crew had the track in racy multi groove shape for this annual event which raises money for the Finish Strong Foundation.

The first feature on the track was the E-Mods. The defending track champion Casey Burnett would take control from the drop of the green flag and would park his 23B machine in McCarthy Autogroup Victory Lane for the second straight week, his third win overall. Current points leader Adam Dunwoodie would put the pressure on and challenge Burnett a few times as Dunwoodie would finish second, Jeff Goepferich Sr would make his first trip to I-35 this season and would have a podium finish in third, Mark Anderson and Tyler Erickson would put together a successful run, finishing fourth and fifth. After a great run last week, with a top four finish, London McClure would gain nine spots to be the hard charger.

Tyler Starmer would put his 11s Pure Stock in McCarthy Autogroup Victory Lane for the second straight week holding off a very good field. Jon Boller Jr would make a move coming to the white flag and would pull alongside Starmer on the last lap but just couldn’t carry the momentum finishing second. Jeff Goepferich Jr, a feature winner earlier in the season came home third, Anthony Whitham had a strong run in fourth and Jakub Hisel started twentieth and charged his way to a fifth-place finish securing the hard charger of the race.

The June 3rd USRA Modified makeup feature was next to hit the track as Tyler Hibner set a torrid pace picking up the win, his first win on the night and his fifth overall. Lee Hibner battled early on finishing second, current points leader Houston Johnson picked up the third spot with Terry Vantrump and Andrew Thomas picking up top five finishes.

The Poweri Midwest Lightening Sprints made their second trip to the famed I-35 Speedway with Trice Roden picking up his second win holding off a tough competitor in Stanley Kreisel. Kreisel would finish second with good runs by Kenny Bowers, Jeff Bard and Riley Scott finishing third-fifth.

The USRA B-Mods were out next with the current USRA B-Mod national points leader Shadren Turner picking up the win. The win marked Turners sixth win at I-35, and his fourteenth in USRA competition. Turner would be challenged early with last week’s winner Corey Myers and defending track champion Tyler Cadwallader putting on the pressure. Turner eventually pulled away for the win. Jaylen Wettengel made a last lap effort to challenge as he finished second, Stephen Clancy came home third, Lucas Issacs fourth and Myers fifth. Clancy gained thirteen positions to get the hard charger.

The $300 to win Sport Compact feature was exciting from the drop of the green flag. Jonnathon Hartman got out front early on before losing the lead to Harold Robb Jr. Both looked prime to pick up their first wins before a late caution spoiled the fun allowing points leader Brad Mick to reel them in. Mick would go on to capture his fifth victory of 2023. Harold Robb Jr came home second with Jonnathon Hartman picking up another third-place finish. Andrew Akers and Samuel Moore were threats to win as well finishing fourth and fifth. Mick gained six positions earning the hard charger. Robb Jr from Lorimor, Iowa won the longest haul bonus.

The $2,020 to win Medieval USRA Stock Cars brought out a thirty-car stout field as Chad Clancy led all twenty five laps enroute to his second straight win at I-35 Speedway. Clancy driving the Tommy Ground owned 33T machine had a great field behind him as Mich Ross and the winner from two weeks ago JJ Baumli would swap second and third place numerous times. Chris Dishong moved through the field at a torrid pace eventually working his way up to second place. By the time Dishong got to second Clancy was already well out of reach and Dishong couldn’t get a late caution he needed to stack the field up. Dishong, a previous winner would finish second, Ross was third, Baumli fourth and Jaylen Wettengel doing double duty picked up a second top five in fifth. Kristchon Hisel won the B-feature and Jason Estes, the defending Tanner memorial winner would rebound from a roll in his heat race and picked up twelve spots to win the hard charger. Scott Carlson hauling from Plattsmouth, Nebraska got the longest haul bonus.

Tyler Hibner would pick up a second win on the night in the USRA Modifieds, his sixth victory of the season. Chad Clancy, having run twenty-five laps to a win just one race prior would finish second doing double duty on the night. Points leader Houston Johnson picked up another third-place finish followed by a rare appearance by Ben Stockton in fourth and the driver coming in to the night sitting third place in the USRA National points standings Tyler Grooms in fifth. Stockton would gain six positions to take the hard charger.

Payton Hanes would motor to her second win of the season in the Jr Sport Compact division as she now pulls even with Maddy Barr at the top of the points standings. Grant Sheetz put the pressure on all race long as he would come home second, Betty Wright has an impressive run finishing third, with Katelynn Fleming putting together a good run in fourth and the winner of the previous three features Brycen Bouzek in fifth.
