Leonard picks up $3,000 Caney Valley Speedway victory in James House Memorial

CANEY, Kans. —  Kansas farmer Dusty Leonard sometimes has to miss some races to tend his 200-acre farm, especially during harvest season. Saturday Leonard harvested up a victory at Caney Valley Speedway.

Leonard picked up his fifth career Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series presented by Hayden Ross Motorsports Foundation victory earning $3,000 in the 25-lap James House Memorial.

Leonard pressured early leader Darren Moses for several laps in the early going before finally racing into the lead with a high side pass on lap 8.

“I had to earn the lead about five times there,” Leonard said of his pass for the top spot. “We had a really good balance on the race car and we could move around in the middle of the race track and even down to the bottom. That made our night a lot easier.”

The key to getting the lead was patience and pressure.

“Making him rush and make a few mistakes, Leonard said of the key to getting by Moses. “We have a term, patiently aggressive, and we used the heck out of that tonight.”

Jacob Magee raced around Moses for second on lap 14 and closed on Leonard. But Leonard did not five Magee any opportunities to pass him.

“I was just trying to take care of the tires knowing we might have a couple of late restarts to take of,” Leonard said.

“I was watching for him. The track was starting to latch up and I figured his motor would eventually start to come in. I am thankful the race was 25 (laps) and not 35.”

Joseph Gorby took over third on lap 19 and tried to make it a three-car race, but settled for third at the finish. Moses fell to fourth and Jason Redman rounded out the top five.

Kip Hughes advanced nine spots to 8th earning him the Marks Machine Shop Hard Charger award.

Next event is August 12 make-up features plus a complete point show at Enid Speedway, September 9.
