Derrick Stewart flies Malvern Bank Late Model checkers at Clay County Fair

Spencer, IA —  Derrick Stewart stood tall in victory lane at the end of Tuesday’s Malvern Bank Super Late Models West Series first appearance at Clay County Speedway.

For the first time in West Series history, the tour invaded the 3/8 mile oval at the Clay County Fairgrounds in Spencer, Iowa for the very first time. Round 21 of the 2023 season saw drivers from Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota duke it out in front of a massive crowd.

Derrick Stewart was the top qualifier on the evening when he clocked in at 17.089 seconds. Later in the evening, the Zeitner family made their presence known as both Corey and Justin won the two heat races.
When it was time for the 25-lap main event, Stewart was on the outside of the front row while Andrew Kosiski led the field to the green from pole position. Stewart would lead the first lap before Kosiski took the top spot back on lap two.
The race strung out into a long green-flag stint with Kosiski leading while Stewart battled with Tad Pospisil and Bill Leighton Jr. in the top five. Corey and Justin Zeitner both battled closely for sixth and seventh during the middle part of the race.

The only caution came out when Jeff Segebart spit out his driveshaft rendering his vehicle powerless. This would stack the field up for a 9-lap dash for the finish. On the restart, Stewart tried the outside line just as he did throughout the majority of the race.

With only five laps to go, Stewart made the go-ahead pass on Kosiski for the lead, and from that point, the Ainsworth, Iowa native went on to take the win. It was his first West Series exclusive win and his second win of his career after he won the Tony Stewart Tribute earlier this year with the East Series.

Tad Pospisil was able to beat Kosiski for second at the line by half a car length while Kosiski had to settle for third. Bill Leighton Jr. took fourth while Corey Zeitner rounded out the top five.

The Malvern Bank West Series and Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking East Series go head-to- head one last time in 2023 as they head to the world-famous Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa for the Bob Maaschman Memorial on Saturday, September 16. After that, the East Series returns to action with the 2023 Iowa Governor’s Cup at the C J Speedway in Columbus Junction, Iowa.
